    Due to a mass hangover coupled with just watching high fidelity i gots to thinking about funeral songs. {mordid, i know but thats what sunday mornings are!!!!}

I'd like to have Manics 'This yesterday' as the opener, Jeff Buckley 'Corpus Christi Carol' in the middle and 'Live forever' as the closer

They change everyday but that's what i'm picking today

what would you people want played?

dunno why but i always wanted last kiss by pearl jam to be sung at mine...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,287 ✭✭✭thedrowner

twould have to be somehitng fairly beautiful alright (to represent the greatness of me :D) i'd need spine tingling singing

but THEN....i'd feel a bit stupid if the lyrics werent relevant in some way. btu **** it, i'd be dead anyway, so why would i care?????

something like 'the dark is rising' by mercury rev. I'd also have some gorgeous opera/classical song like 'the strangers grave' opr 'ophelia's song'. maybe the thinner the air by cocteau twins

something by bjork maybe? Come to me? Araura? I play dead? (that'd be relevant!!!)

maybe that BFF song in me sig? Evaporated?
    oh vancouver by jeff buckley
oh oh and who wants to live forever or save me by queen. or barcelona.

seeing a pattern here? ....i'd probably be really vain and get my ma/kids/someone to play me singing a lovely weepy opera song. (hee hee)

Dont Worry Be Happy was played at my friends funeral it was a song he had always said he'd like played.......It was lovely coz it reallysuited his personality
Me personally i dont know really.......

I think my friends or family would hav to pick em out i dont want sad songs though coz im not really a morbid person and i wouldnt like things to be really depressing......

Meh! im rambling now so ill go......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,092 ✭✭✭Pigman

Certainly nothing by the Beatles or U2 that's for sure. A mate of mine got run over by a car a few years ago and having listen to 'Hey Jude' or 'With or Without You' played acoustically in a church just made me feel even more depressed thru its sheer cornyness.

I think I'll just leave instructions to my friends to go through my record collection and pick out whatever tunes that they wanted to listen to on the day. After all, they're the ones who are gonna have to sit thru em, not me.

funny story bout funeral songs i have...

while i was on hoidays during the summer one of my mates put on 'like spinning plates' by radiohead and he said that he wanted it played at his funeral. so i kinda wetn hell yeah thats a ****in great song, your funeral will be class... so after a bit of chatting we agreed that if i'm attending ger's funeral when 'like spinning plates' is played, i have to stand up and shout at the top of my voice (which is pretty loud)
"yeah!!! radiohead!!! this funeral fúckin rules!!!"

just imagine explaining that to his mum/wife/brothers

anyway on the subject matter i've never really thought long and hard about it... its a big thing for my friends('ur not a real friend unless you know the songs i want played at my funeral' kinda thing) i couldnt really care less at the moment but we'll see

Back in my parent-baiting youth I also swore that my funeral song would be 'Die in the Summertime' or possibly 'Negative Creep'. Now I think I'd like something by Gareth Gates just to remind everyone there that death is not the ultimate horror

    I am a negative creep!

I want Morcheeba ~ The Sea played at my funeral. Since it'll be a cremation on Clearwater Beach in Florida & my ashes'll be tossed into the shark-infested waters so I'll be at one with nature but the bastards won't be able to eat me. : )

Doves - There Goes The Fear
Embrace - My Weakness Is None Of Your Business
    Embrace - Drawn From Memory
    Foo Fighters - February Stars
Goo Goo Dolls - Black Balloon

it would have to be, either the stones, wild horses or muse BLISSSS

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 115 ✭✭Miss-Misery

I'd have to have something by Jeff Buckley, 'last goodbye' or 'grace' or 'lover you should've come over'.or 'i know its over' by the smiths or 'heyday' by mic christopher, or 'revelate' by the frames or 'pitseleh'or 'between the bars' by Elliott Smith or 'where the stars turn blue' by ryan adams. but hopefully i'll be nice and old and want german accordion renditions of 'killing me softly' or something odd like that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,601 ✭✭✭Kali

Personally i'd like nothing more than Roger Waters to arrive and play Wish You Were Here... but since thats not likely to happen (plus i hope to outlive someone already in their 50s)...

The Doors - Break On Through
    Neil Young - Old King
Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond
George Harrisson - All Things Must Pass (the album version)

nothing worse than going to a funeral and some horribly depressing song is played... something by they might be giants could be good as well :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 331 ✭✭metalish

    my songs would be-
    Samshing Pumpkins 'tonight tonight'
    the frames 'lay me down'
    jeff buckley 'last goodbye'
    tool 'sobar'
    metallica 'the unforgivan'
    R.E.M 'everybody hurts'

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16 Dob77

"Release" by Pearl Jam was played at a friend of mines funeral. Twas very sad....

    Personally I'd like:
36 strings by the Redneck manifesto
Underneath the Weeping Willow by Grandaddy

    The Cure - Faith
The The - Love is Stronger than death

Think for a minute - the Housemartins

Hey, true story - no bull s*itinn', mate of mine went to his uncle's funeral and they are the sort of family that have sessions. They asked him to get up and sing one, and after much persuasion and with true innocence he got up and sung "Alive" by Pearl Jam. I had to get up and leave the room!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭Kurdt

or maybe something full of hate and anger to scare yer relatives that think yer just as "normal" (dont bate me for that) as the girl next door...(no, not the porn girl from next door)..

hands up who knows what i'm on about? coz i sure as hell am lost!

anyhoo, i'd love the end by thte doors (oh cliché where art thou?)

this is like choosing ym favourite band, im always changing my mind about this. (yes, i do talk about it alot)

i want my funeral to be like a big long extended party, with beach volleyball. and my coffin will be fitted with a beer keg, so when you pull my arm down, the beer comes out.

anyway, ive thought about loads of songs, some fo them already mentioned. but the one song im definitely sticking with is the closing song... Pixies - Monkey Gone To Heaven.

    and Wonderwall of course. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,287 ✭✭✭thedrowner

yeah see i want everyone BALLING at my funeral, no parties for me, i want people to be devastated.
    anyways

i believe my mum has written into her will that her sister has to tap dance on her coffin......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭Kurdt

i want a karaoke theme at mine...everyone has to choose a song to sing...granted it may take a few days but yis will thank me for the time off work :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 257 ✭✭irokie

i heard about this thread quite some time ago, but i hadn't got myself together enough to come and find it...

as for funeral music, i think it'd be fun to play stuff that'd get ppl even more depressed than they already are... or else play that all time classic "EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!!!"

    so then choices would be

    koRn - dead bodies everywhere
radiohead - exit music (for a film)
metallica - to live is to die

but not really... i don't know what i'd want played, something buckleyesque, or p'raps a joyous dash of summat from johnny and his amazing telemecaster... it's all so confusing... i love resurrecting threads from the last page before closing...

Yep, this question came up before.

And when it did, I said:

"Malcolm McLaren: Something's Jumping in my Shirt"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 136 ✭✭rapture_queen

I have thought about this before and there is too many that i want so what i suggest is that my funeral last for days and basically give people a reason for listening to good music together.

    A really long party!!!!!!!!!
for those who know me i want my coffin to be painted in flowers
none of this dull brown ****!!!

    Anyway melon collie......-smashing pumpkins
Everybody Hurts (is a very popular choice at funerals, so maybe that)-R.E.M
no there is too many i would be here for days!!!!!!!!!

nobody girl by ryan adams...though i'm not a girl...indeed i am nobody, but not a girl...perhaps this can be taken care of...

what about one of those big long metal songs...that would be pretty good...like pantera-cemetary gates or metallica - one :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭johnnynolegs

i think a really heavy song that would absolutely scare the pants off most people there..............

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭Kurdt

    like fúcking hostile by pantera...

exactly or something from slipknot or something...........

I was also at a funeral the other day and kept thinking of 'Eternal Life' by Jeff Buckley.

Eternal life is now on my trail Got my red glitter coffin, man, just need one last nail While all these ugly gentleman play out their foolish games There's a flaming red horizon that screams our names And as your fantasies are broken in two Did you really think this bloody road would Pave the way for you? You better turn around and blow your kiss hello to life eternal, angel Racist everyman, what have you done? Man, you've made a killer of your unborn son... Crown my fear your king at the point of a gun All I want to do is love everyone... And as your fantasies are broken in two Did you really think this bloody road would Pave the way for you? You better turn around and blow your kiss hello to life eternal, angel There's no time for hatred, only questions What is love, where happiness, what is life, where is peace? When will I find the strength to bring me release? And tell me where is the love in what your prophet has said? Man, it sounds to me just like a prison for the walking dead And I've got a message for you and you and your twisted hell You better turn around and blow your kiss goodbye to life eternal, angel...

I'm not sure how this will sound....but.....
My Dad died back in April, and he had always wanted summer of 69...so as it goes everyones in tears when he is lowered..and next of all Bryan Adams comes on.....well if I didn't nearly piss meself laughing, and when I started,my sisters started......even when we got back to the pub we couldn't figure out why the laughing had started......very strange feeling.I just think the whole lot of us were completely cried out by the time the funeral came around, and we could do nothing more....

To be honest,I certainly wouldn't want anyone balling their eyes out at mine, but unfortunately you can't tell people how to feel at these things

my funeral's going2 be great... lots of people sitting round saying **** like, 'hey, remeber the time she fell out of her shoes in the middle of parnell square?' but as for the music, i was thinkin of this the other day in school (**** so dull twould make anyone think of the auld end of existance), and my list (as yet) goes as follows:
    red chord-frames
    star,star-frames
    cold water-damien rice
    amie-damien rice
    round here-counting crows
    alleluia-jeff buckley
    tonight, tonight-smashing pumpkins
    a long december-counting crows
be not afraid (it's that cool hymn about raging waters and not being afraid!)

and then, at the and of the funeral, all these songs will be compiled into a fabulous album, which will be called..... flown maybe? That's harder than the funeral songs itself thing.....
and everyone would hav 2buy it or they wouldn't be allowed to leave the church, so my family would be rich, rich as nazis by the end of it......

on a slightly different note but in a kinda on the same track way, what songs would be on the soundtrack to your life ( so not2depressing... unless ur life has been depressing, in which case fire away!!)

mine'd probly hav2include (though these are by no means all!)
    drops of jupiter-train
    revelate-frames
    bullet with butterfly wings-pumpkins
arthur robinson and his cadillac dreams-crows
walk on-u2 (i know, i know, somebody get the shotgun, but i like that song)
    another year over-turn
heavenly day/sunburst-picturehouse (1of them but not both!)
    make a killing-aimee mann
the man who sold the world-nirvana
    minority-greenday
    fitzcarraldo-frames

there will be more...right now I can't think.
    toodles

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 331 ✭✭metalish

ok, on the soundtrack to my life i would have to put

    the frames- plateau
    smashing pumpkins- Love
    damien rice- the blower's daughter
    metallica- my friend of misery
    greenday- waiting
    foo fighters- everlong
    the frames- lay me down
nirvana- the man who sold the world
    damien rice- amiee
smashing pumpkins- mellon collie and the infinite saddness
    soundgarden- black hole sun

I dunno, I think I want 'Sing me to sleep' by the Smiths......or maybe 'truth' by turn......or the other one...um...can't think of the name right now....'Isn't it easier this time' is the line from it anyway...

We wanted 'The Dance' by garth Brooks at my sister's, the lyrics really suited, but the priestie boys wouldn't let us have it, but the guy singing did a really deadly accoustic version during the communion anyway, and the priestie boy kept clearing his throat really loudly into the mike....***** ******. It was really sad. We wanted to have this really nice lady sing 'You'll never walk alone' as well cos me sister was a 'Pool supporter, but no dice there either....

I'm definitely not going to get the songs I want so......

I heard "Walk on" by U2 at a funeral and it was the saddest thing ever. Me, I'd go with Halo Day by Mick Christopher or maybe "Say hello, Wave Goodbye" by Marc Almond to camp things up a bit !

The theme tune to the old BBC sitcom 'Bread'

Actually, I just want Johnny Pyro to play in the pub after my funeral. I'll just be really annoyed that I won't be there. But hey.

A lot of music by Ennio Morricone. Fantastic music.

I'm not sure about during the funeral, but at the end, just as everyone's leaving and standing up to leave I want Lot 105 by Blur played.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,749 ✭✭✭tony 2 tone

I'd love to have Unbeliver by Therapy? played at mine.............but the thing is what ever song you pick will remind those at the funeral of your death every time they hear it.........example Guns N Roses starts playing in Brux or whereever and my friend always bails in tears...........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 628 ✭✭✭kranog

About a year ago I had a funeral to attend, nobody likes funerals but this one particularly affected me as it was my nephews funeral. My brother (my nephews father) came up to me and asked if I could sing at the service. I was greif-striken enough but I couldn't imagine how he felt, so of course, I told him I would.
He asked me to sing the song "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls. I always loved that song but I never realised how appropreiate the lyrics were for the occasion. I sang the song trying my hardest not to break down crying, though everyone else was.....I haven't really been able to listen to that song since !!!
    Peace,

Mate of mine did himself in a while back - he was a big U2 fan, so a girl got up and played "Sunday Bloody Sunday" on a harp.

    It was pretty amazing....
