I have now asked Mr Pat Kenny. To consider the obvious need for a Late Late show special on the current scandalous Internet usage costs rip off being suffered by the citizens of the Irish Republic.

RTE have a statutory duty too educate and inform the general public - in the public good - when they are suffering an injustice of which they may not be aware.

Thats why we have too pay for a TV license, it is now about time that RTE fulfilled their mandate.

    Yours,

    paddy20.

    lol

I'm sure they're scurrying around the office now arranging the open air debate ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,118 ✭✭✭LoBo

maybe, Paddy20, could bring some huge?- cardboard cutouts of punctuation, like, question marks (??) to symbolize the unknowns? of irish internet, ??..

    yours, etc

but seriously, would it really garner enough interest? Old ladies from the country (with 0 interest in or knowledge of the internet) would also watch the program..

Ah sure I'll give it some thought but I aint makin any guarantees.

paddy20 has a point and quite possibly a good idea.

No offence, Paddy, but I can only hope and assume that you put your point across better to the RTÉ personnel you spoke to better than you manage to put it across on this forum.

There have been interesting debates on the Late Late Show on much lesser matters - I don't see why a debate such as that which was had at the IOFFL seminar - with all the interested parties present - shouldn't be put on the air.

And Pat Kenny... har har

I think the idea that "we're being ripped off" and asked to pay considerably more than our European neighbours will strike a general chord in the populace, they won't worry too much that the the technical details are a little bit over their heads.

We can all be part of the audience and wave into the camera while looking at the monitor on the roof....
Its the one thing they tell you not to do before the show and still everybody does it. Must be all the free drink they give you before you go in..

I think its a good idea, a whole show might be a bit much, but a debate on the show would work well.

Nothing to lose, all to gain as they say ;)

At first when I saw this I though "It would never happen" but thinking about it a show with lots of issues such as

    Downturn in the hightech sector
    Recent Job losses
    Lack of Investment
    Lack of attracting foreign Companies
    Lack of telecommunications competition
    Lack of affoardable Broadband
    Progress on the E-Chubb

Would actually make a show really worth watching and wold force some high profile people to answer some very difficult questions.......which of course they couldnt answer anyway! :/

    Ya never know......

The only way this subject will get on the Late Late
is as part of a much wider discussion about Irelands
economic future, and even then only in passing. As LoBo noted above the shows audience profile is not net savvy or even computer smart I suspect.

    Mike.

    He who hesitates, is lost.
    It could really help:-

If some members of IOFFL would drop a - personal - e-mail, to :-

    "todaypk@rte.ie"-
    - before tomorrow mornings show on Radio -. Tomorrow being Friday - another Late, Late show day.

Also requesting and explaining why they believe a Late, Late Show "Special" is warranted on RTE TV as soon as possible would help, the inclusion of a copy of Danggers/ David Longs first instalment No.1. article/series entitled "Broadening horizons" from the current issue of PC Live which is educational, very enlightening and above all ENTERTAINING?.. might just broaden Pats outlook enough to get his full backing for this - Suggestion!.

Why not E-Mail your thoughts to him - tonight. Strike while the iron is hot - do it now. Keep up the pressure, its lonely out here, especially if I am the only one that has made the suggestion.

Turn, it in too a "Campaign for Justice" using our own main communication format, Television. As our platform. Any takers, whats too lose when you have everything too gain.

    All the best.

    Yours,

paddy20:eek: I hope my request is not left ALONE in the wilderness of RTE?..

    Paddy
To be honest, this specific subject would not get a full late late on its own..
Too much of the targeted audience profile would switch off after about an hour and go for a pint,or switch over

  • Registered Users Posts: 857 ✭✭✭kamobe

Even if they do hold a debate on it, Eircom would doubtlessly abstain from it, or send someone who can plead ignorance to any testing questions which may be asked.

"I don't much about this ASL service, is it like ISDN? That's only 49c a day!!!"

    jd,

Between you and me. I would be happy with even a "Slot" for our genuine plight on the Late Late - but if we do not try! then we are going nowhere.

Television is the most powerful message/communication medium on the planet.

Pat could easily do a three minute - taster - too judge audience knowledge and reaction on this subject,- tomorrow night- if he wanted, but he must be encouraged.

We can not leave everything to the voluntary IOFFL Committee.
They deserve too win and - with a little help from your friends - as the melody went. Nothing is impossible. So why not go for it instead of pre-judging the audience interest?,.

Be assured, that the Late Late has a very experienced team of researchers who could fill every seat with pro flat rate people in one day. I know about audience manipulation and selection for live TV debates - and this subjects potential in studio audience could be pre-selected.

Apart from that, No telecommunications company is not going to WANT too be represented and that includes Eircom, EsatBT,IOL, etc, etc,.

Hope, I am managing too get my message across - the last thing
we need is negativity, lets be positive - because we can win.

Is the enemy not ALREADY on the run?..

    Good luck.

    Yours,

    paddy20;)

How about David McWilliams, of Newstalk and TV3's agenda. He's not scared to tackle weighty stuff.

I just want to know who is going to be picked to sing a little ditty to the folks back home :)

Seriously all this talk about the lack of cheep priced net access relating to the loss of jobs in the IT sector is bull. While I do admit that the higher cost of net access in Ireland compaired to our European counterparts is not helping the matter, the main cause of job loss's in the IT sector in this country is due mostly to the corporate fraud that has desemated the financial sector in America not to mention the effect September 11th had on the world economy.

The majority of the IT firms that have closed down were sub companies/branch's of bigger American companies. Once these companies felt the pince, layoffs were going to happen in other countries which Ireland was a big factor in.

The other part of the IT industry that is affected in relation to higher web connection costs is web design. This industry has always been very up and down in how the market for its products were doing due to lack of awearness in the generial public for such a product and also in the amount of people working in the industry at any one time. Even taking into account the costs of being online to work in the web industry, from personal experence most of the work is done offline and the cost would just come into effect when the finished product is being uploaded to the web.

Im not saying dont try playing the net cost in Ireland vs IT industry going poof card, but just be ready for when it gets shot down in flames.

    Just got two e-mails from - Buy4Now.ie.

** Exclusively, promoting - Get smart with NetSmart, from Ireland On-line (IOL).

I will be sticking with UTVip-Thank you, but the Netwar has now really sprung too life. Mainly due I believe to IOFFL, this forum and all members opinions" a worthy cause".

Interesting times, the real world competition battle has just begun and the end-user Joe Soap will be the outright winner.

Anyone else being bombarded with telecoms looking for Internet users business?..

    Good Idea Paddy

Just quick word, Some of you think that some people dont know much about internet access, Two years ago i upgraded to a new pc and had the old one gathering dust, To my shock my mother 70 years old asked me one day what i was going to do with it ,She wanted it so i set it up in her house got the internet up and going got a email address for them now dad as well is sending emails to me, When UTV launched with there internet package they were on the phone that night asking me was it a good idea told them that i was just sending off my form to them , they sent off there form as well and are now takeing full use of the internet now, How many more are doing the same, Well today my wifes parents bought a new pc, they got a webcam as well so they can talk with my parents online & other friends in england & the states they have sent off the form for utv as well, Now we have alot of people leaveing ireland due to the downturn, A lot of parents who want to keep in contact with there kids , The internet is the cheap way, If we can keep this in the press & TV as well i think that a lot of people would get the idea of cheap internet and talk to there local tds this could help,
Just think guys a lot of voters talking to tds and if there was a pat kenny tv show it could not do any harm well done Paddy keep it up:cool:

Wonderfull idea!. Imagine ESAT / ODTR / EIRCOM / UTVip etc etc. all on the one panel in the LLS with about 1,000 IrelandOFFline members in the Audience? Now that would really make some show and draw a LOT of attention to the LLS AND our current situitation :)

Imagine Esat/Eircom there at all! What'd be the chances of them showing up?

just gave me a thought now that everyone is going to be connected to the internet via utv ip how iwill eircom be able to call to ask why they moved.

on the late late show issue, would be wiling to sign a petition for a segment to be broadcast on the issue with a panel and all

Ok I know I might have laughted at this idea but I still think its a good one. Somone from IOFFL should approach PK and ask him, all he can say is No? so why not try it? What have we got to loose? If enough pressure was put on him to do it and he realised the amount of publicity he would get out of it etc. Like how many NONE LLS watchers would be tuned in on that night?

With internet in 40something% of Irish homes - what are peope actually using it for? How much and why?. Is it any use? What are people afraid of?

Are we shopping, researching health issues, chatting to our friends?

Is Granny using it or is it just a toy for the male teenager in his bedroom?

What about interactiveTV, viruses, porn and child protection?

What abour learning, teleworking, access for those with disabilities, geographical exclusion etc.

This might be the basis for a full programme. Within that you could have a very interesting debate about costs of access etc and a spokesperson on a panel from IOFFL.

Fair point vinnyfitz. Technology seems to be getting it's second wind in the media at the moment, and thankfully it's not just the head-in-the-clouds muppets or panic-stricken luddites getting all the airtime these days. For example, I was watching Channel 4 News the other day and they mentioned Linux in a segment on Bugbear, and, much to my surprise, nobody asked what Linux was!

Maybe the Late Late is ready for it. There's certainly scope for it, as long as the producers don't limit themselves too tightly, for example they could do a special on Technology, or perhaps "Comms, Computing and the Internet". And if you project, it could play out quite well for the Late Late, if they put their minds to it. A little clever marketing should bring a younger audience to both the studio and the screen.

If we could pull it off, it strikes me as a win-win for us. Dave is good with the media[1], and there's plenty of people out there in both camps who wouldn't mind speaking their piece[2]. For example, I'm sure Scott Taunton would welcome an invitation, and I think Etain might be keen to step up to the plate and defend herself -- and I think if she was willing to go up against anyone, it would be Dave[3].

And of course there's the other two, we'd have mighty fun with them. If they don't turn up, they look guilty as hell, and boy will we highlight that if it happens. If they do turn up, we'll tear them a new one. Unfortunately, this is also our Achilles Heel. RTE is a political organisation when you get right down to it, so not only will they be faced with financial threats (advertising revenues), they'll have Bertie on their back too.

    adam

[1] As long as he doesn't out-think himself. Sorry Dave, but you know I speak the truth.
[2] Mr. Weigl is already in the car park I imagine.
    [3] But perhaps not Martin.
NOTE: Please append smilies to all of the above.

I seem to remember a segment on the Late Late last year where a few people were on to do the usual Oprah-style "beware of internet chatrooms - watch your children" warnings. I don't really watch the show so I must have been flicking channels at the time. As far as I remember the people were from the National Centre for Technology in Education.

Not that that's too relevant of course, but it was a full Late Late Show segment (>30/40mins) dedicated to an "internet" issue, albeit one they felt a necessity to highlight.

I agree it would have to be included as part of a show (or as part of part of a show) with a wider remit. There's no way that RTE would dedicate anywhere near a full show to a single specific issue.

Hows about we get Pat to show voice over IP, streaming video and other useful high bandwidth apps .... and then he says "but you cant get it, (if you live outside Dublin, and, heh, sometimes even if you DO live in Dublin) even though your cousin in Estonia can" .. people might react better (from Ireland Offlines' POV) if they see stuff they think may be useful and are told they cant get it or it is prohibitively expensive to get because of gross incompetence on the part of the ODTR and Eirmonopoly....
