whats with the boards, its so slow??? on 64k isdn it took 40 seconds to open this Bugs/Suggestions boards??? and its usually takes at least 20 seconds for each board topic.. even on 1meg ADSL in work ? There's no problem with my connection, google opens up in 1 second ... yahoo in 3 or 4

I've noticed it to be generally slow anyway, but lately its got really bad

Well, there's nothing wrong here, 56k Dialup, and everything is flying along. All the forums are opening in about 6 seconds.

Nevadatele's routing seems to be pants.

We're leaving them for another host. Its disgraceful.

Can you post traceroutes during times when you find it bad?
    Thanks,

<Oj> its even turning me away not to bother replying to the communitys thoughts
<Bard`> I was going to post up a message asking for help with a h/w problem
<Bard`> its just taking too damn long

Anything that reduces the amount of the usual crap these users post is a good thing imo. Why try to fix something that benifits us all?

This is a community bulletin board site, Bubbles. It's actually the utterly pointless type of post as demonstrated by yourself right here (above) in which you berate and insult those who just want to use boards for what they were intended, that we should be seeing less of...

Oj wanted to reply to the community's thoughts. I wanted to request help with a problem I'm having with some hardware. We wanted to use the boards for what they were intended... discussion and collaboration.

Its very annoying waiting 4mins 32sec just to reply to a topic that took over 2 mins to load..
IOne thing that I find weird, its just the bulletion board that takes ages to load, but howcome the www.boards.ie/funneh pics stream in nice and face loading for me?
I know yous are moving and all that, but I was bitching on IRC, and wasn't really making a big issue out of it, bubs just got a bit smart and made this post :)

Look lads, the Admin board is not the place for idle personal insults, you're not doing this Community any good with that. Take it private lads. You of all people should know better Bard.

Accessing www.boards.ie/funneh/ doesn't require the server to send SQL requests to a fairly large database, OJ. Plus there's the fact that www.boards.ie/funneh/ is a very small text-only page and most forum or thread pages are quite large in comparison.

You may have noticed a distinct improvement in speed in the past few minutes - we've had to remove the happy little "new post" stars from the DHTML menu but I think you'll agree it is worth it. The menu is now regenerated daily, not every time you load a page.

    Thanks for the help Regi,

Ok, lemme explain what we've done.

The dhtml menu at the top was being generated *every* time a page was requested from boards. This means it would

    - get a list of all forums/sub-forums
    - work out if you were allowed to view those forums or not, and if you were, display them
    - look at your cookies and check to see if there had been any new posts in *every* single forum since you'd last been on
    - look at your subscribed settings and check every subscribed forums

This was adding up to a hideous amount of database time, and it was happening every time someone requested a page (and we serve over 50,000 of those every day). MySQL was running at roughly 88% of cpu time this morning.

What we've done now is change that script to output an HTML file every morning, and then we statically include that page into boards on every page request.

This means we can run it once a day instead of 50,000+ times. It also means that we've temporarily lost some features such as the 'last post' in each forum bit, and the subscribed forum area. We'll replace them shortly with less database-crushing alternatives.

Hopefully, it'll reduce the crawling lag that we've been experiencing lately. Be patient with us, please :)

    The question is... has it?

Can the people who reported slowness in the first place confirm or deny that the site is back to its proper speed?

From the traceroutes shown above some of them were having big jumps in the trace so it may or may not be our navigation.
As I said, can anyone confirm or deny a speed difference?

    DeV.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,564 ✭✭✭Typedef

    Actually that does seem faster.

The strange thing is Opera was reporting something like 500 bytes per second throughput earlier today and is reporting 2.4k per second throughput now.

You would think that if it were MySQL munging away that you would get 'no' information while it was readying the page and then you would get the information at the expected 2.4k(give or take), once it had read all the pertinent information from the DB.

Perhaps it is simply the time of day?
    --shrug.

Cloud, here's an idea: How about writing a js file to disk for each user when they start their session, complete with the pretty little stars? I know there's 5,000+ users here, but how many browse at one time? If you have a pretty stringent cleanup routine, people should still be able to get their pretty stars, but you'd only have the extra overhead once per session. You could name the js files according to numerical userid.

In the long term, it should be possible to allow users to clean all the cruft out of their navbars with a separate table in the database. So I wouldn't have to see Sport and Games and all that other chuff if I didn't want to. Wouldn't this be a nice simple project to hand off to Hack Attack, get them started? Watching them mutter at each other about tags and how much they're worth is starting to get embarrassing. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,118 ✭✭✭LoBo

I second Dahamsta's idea. Alternatively, at the start of each day you could update each users list of subscribed forums? Then refer to this alone for the subbed drop down - rather than get the latest list in real time from the database. I'd much rather have my list of subbed forums updated once per day rather than not have them at all - they rarely change :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,601 ✭✭✭Kali

Is the search function disabled because of this slowness then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,876 ✭✭✭Borzoi

While each individual page may be faster to load without the * function, I have to load a pages, to check if there is new messages in a particular forum, instead of running the cursor along ther dropdowns. As a result more unnecessary page loads, and slowness, but by a different route :(

Presumably this is because having these features on the menu causes database access.

(it'd have to access the DB to determine which of the links you're allowed see - i.e.: only members of the private forums would get links to them and only mods would get the mod forum link)

these can still be accessed at www.boards.ie/vbulletin

Its nice to see a bit of speed back into the Boards.ie life.

I think I'd live with no *'s and Subbed Links if the SQL server isn't lagged.

At least its a nice accolade to lag out a MySQL server.
