    Colin MacRea 2 / Toca 2

CM2 is great for fun rallying and great handling
Toca 2 is great fro the AI and precise handling

    i just cant decide....

Toca 2, i wasted almost my entire summer after leaving school playing that one. great game. got some space on me pc i thinks i will install it again. cm2 was also excelent but gran turismo 2 is still the best.

Yep, GT2 here too. Pity GT3 wasn't as indepth. Closely followed by TOCA2, V Rally 2 and WRC. Hope to get the new TOCA Race Driver for PS2 soon.

Grand Prix Legends ,is in a league of its own,
    Nascar 2002 is next.
    F1 2002 and GP4 then.
GT2,Toca2 and CMR2 are excellent games but definitely not sims.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,316 ✭✭✭ButcherOfNog

    Grand Prix Legends :)

and this forum will be for all types of racing games, not just sims, but do expect us sim folk to look down our noses at u :)

gt2 and toca2 not sims? hmm. how does one define a sim. is it by handling of the cars? or is it the attention to detail and the ability to tweak the car beyond belief? now if its handling where does that leave toca2? that is almost as unforgiving as gp3/4. then there is gt2. each car in that can be modified quite a lot more than gp3/4. or could it be that they are console games? seems to be a bit of pc snobbery here :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,042 ✭✭✭spooky donkey

well i had to say the gran turismo series is the best sim!

I'm with SearrarD, Colin McCrae 2 is my fav and looking forward to the third installment.
    Anybody see the video's. Wow.

Rally Champ 2000 is imo BETTER than CM2.0.
CM2 is more arcady whereas RC2K is more sim.

Both games knock the sox off other rally games anyhow! [till CM3!]

GP3 cos I havent forked out for GP4 yet!

    GTA3!:p

GPL ran terrible on my old machine and I havent got the game to try out on my new kit.

Just try Grand Prix Legends or Nascar 2002 both by Paprus racing and you will see what a real sim is .
I have raced Formula Ford for 3 years until i had a bad accident at work so i feel i have some idea how a racing sim should feel like.Like i said Toca and GT series are fine games but to me too arcadey. Its only when i played GPL that i realised Toca etc are not sims but fine fun games none the less.
By the way im not bragging about racing Formula ford cos i was in a low division and not quick at all,5th was best finish ever for me.
Jp Montoya and J Villeneuve are known to try their hand at GPL,nuff said.

Go here! ,read! ,get GPL! and you will see what i mean.

You couldn't finish GT2. I was addicted as hell to it. finished everything, stuck on 99%.. so goddamn annoying.

personally the best racing game i have ever played is Rally Championship 2000 on the pc... full british rally championship and some of the most challenging stages ever (its so hard i only got halfway through the game and had to give up.. a first for any driving game i've tried)
I have raced Formula Ford for 3 years until i had a bad accident at work

mind me asking your name? i've been at the vast majority of club racing meets in mondello for the past 5 years, so might have heard of yourself (thats if its actually irish fford) :)

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Hi Kali,i raced in England mostly.Since im origionaly from Kildare i too attend Mondello.I lived in Birmingham on and off for 3 years, where i raced in a class which was equivilant to probably division 5 or 6.Totally amateur, about 5 races a year with a few guys ,i wouldnt call us a team,2 mechanics and 2 drivers,1 car.We used same setup for all tracks such was our knowledge :)I tried the Irish scene but since Formula ford is just the one class in Ireland i was way too slow for those guys.
We raced same spec ie 1600 cc, i have practiced in Mondello quite a few times with a Formula Zetec team.
Niell Shanahan[RIP] was the big Irish star around this time.

rally championship 2000 wont work on xp. it stutter every 2-3 seconds and if you put it in compatability modes the controls lag instead of the game. the stages in that were unbelivably hard 20 - 25 miles long. never finished that one to. one big problem with it though was the indestructible hay bales.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,042 ✭✭✭spooky donkey

Well i had a problem with some older racing sims on XP, cant for the life of me rember what they are now!

RC2K runs perfect on XP on my kit & I havent even touched the compatibility mode.

Butt yeaa...haybales are a pain in the arse.
The stages may be long butt with the best Force Feedback for a rally game, I dont notice the time fly!

Yeaa...Like you, atm, I'm just about half way through. A7 Astra. Won 3 rallys outright, crashed outta one [thats how got damn realistic the game is!] and have won 3 of the opening 4 stages on my current rally.

Only thing holding me back is my lack of XP drivers for my FF steering wheel and I canent seem to find them ANYWHERE.:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,205 ✭✭✭✭hmmm

Rally Championship is awesome - rush out and pick it up at Amazon for 6 quid or so :)

The stages are amazing, the handling is excellent (once you tweak it properly and apply the patches), although there is a problem I admit with the center turning.

So many favourites, first was f1gp on meh 286, pure ownage. I can remember being glued to that game for entire weekends. Then there was rac rally ( various versions of it ). I got gp2, but gave up on it after a while. I love GT, thought its not a sim, its got very good handling in gt mode. I discovered GPL about a week ago, and it's fair to say that it is in another league. I cannot get over how good the game is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,711 ✭✭✭Dr. Dre

    Hmmm it's a tricky question.
In the arcade in the 80's I used to be ADDICTED to Hard Drivin', now that was some simulator.

I like EA's F1 games (2001&2002) and Geoff Crammonds GP series (being playing them since my trusty old Amiga)

Grand Prix Legends is a really good game, but I sometimes find it impossibly hard to cope with !!

I see no previous mention of Rally Masters, I would urge you to check this game out, it is fantastic both in terms of graphics, realism and playability. It is quite old 3-4 years, but there are still people developing new cars and stuff for it. I would have to name that as my favourite sim of all time.

Of course, in my opinion, no game I have mentioned can be played with anything other than a wheel and pedals, or with any "driving aids" turned on.

Just me tuppence worth ! :)

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

I played Rally masters and rally championship.
In fact im on the look out for them but cannot get them anywhere.
    Both are great fun.
    Anyone selling them ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,711 ✭✭✭Dr. Dre

dcully, you can still get Rally Masters here I only found it about a month ago,
and all the addons etc you will find mentioned\announced here

    Enjoy

I wouldn't really call rally masters a sim now, it is great fun on lan ok though :)

GPL is the best racer I've seen... Is the papyrus Nascar game near as good as GPL anyone?

(Another decent game nobody mentioned is Rally Trophy)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,342 ✭✭✭JohnBoy

    Ugh, where to start.....

GP1, omg, what a great game.
I was (until very recently) a keyboard driver, and that is still one of the best.

Network Q rac rally championship (rc2000, but RC1996), another great game, man I loved the escort in that.

(stopped playing much racing games for a while after that due to pc crapdom)

Then Rally championship 2000, the best keyboard handling ever, I have since gotten a wheel, but i'm still faster with the keys on this one

Need for speed porsche 2000, Yet again, I love this game, for totally different reasons, it's just sooooo fluid, so nice, so pretty. the first good need for speed ever IMHO

Have recently being buying quite a few budget classics that came out when i couldn't afford a decent pc, viper racing, is actually quite good, it's got a funky through the wishbones camera shot, and I have only a few weeks ago discovered the joy that is TOCA2, now that is a great game, not crazy difficult, but hard none the less, just right really.

Also a fan of Mercedes Benz truck Racing, very challenging at the higher difficulty levels.

And I also have cmr2, but i'm not it's biggest fan, too twitchy or summat. good, just don't like it, not quite sure why, just doesn't sit well with me.

And rally championship extreme, what a dissappointment, it's like international rally championship all over again. hopefully the franchise will revert back to magnetic fields for the next verision.

I use a logitech formula (non force, picked it up for 60 pounds in game last christmas, shop soiled box, but perfect otherwise)

    thats it from me,
    for now

Roadrunner,Nascar 2002 is amazing, the physics are a step up from GPL even.Netcode is superb even on my 56k.
Ive managed to win fair few races online and participate in an online league.
I didnt manage a win in my league but got 3 4th places.I finished league 11th place out of 40 .it was a UK based league and my 56k held up fine.Pings of about 230 on both UK and US servers.

Nascar 2002 is really intense racing bumper to bumper at 190 mph, 42 guys racing inches apart and at same time watching for tyre wear and thinking about pitstop strategies.
I recomend a league or getting to know good servers to avoid wreckers.
To prevent such wreckers Papyrus have a ranking system ,so if you cause a wreck its all noted.Hosts can setup servers with a set limit of points to exclude wreckers.
Id say get it now you wont regret it.
I was not a Nascar fan but since its made by the KINGS Papyrus i thought id try .
Its certainly better than racing 5 dumb AI cars in GT3.

ExciteBike on the NES... that was a class game for it's time.
V Rally on PS or GT3 on PS2.

i loved the damage model in viper racing. there is nothing more satisfying than absolutly mangling the car.

Dcully, Nascar is excellent. Everything about it is great. I've also never heard engine sounds that good before in a game.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

    Glad you like it roadrunner.
Its an amazing sim ,it and GPL are light years ahead of anything else.Hope you get to play it online, maybe join a league?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭RoadRunner

The AI in nascar is so good, that it would probably be hard to notice the difference between a computer or a human player.

na, its easy to spot the difference, human players online can't drive in a straight line, have no idea what 'backing off' means, will only drive superspeedways and always force you into the wall :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭DiscoStu

got the demo of nascar 2002 there a few days ago, mmmmm. who would have thought the idea of turning left for 200 laps would be so good? i doubt my comp would be up to a 42 car race but the 20 or so in the demo is fine. its difficult but not frustrating like gpl. when i gets some cash its going to be mine.

    LOL.
I'm quite new to online racing on GPL, I expected people to crash, bash, and basically drive the circuits backwards.. But for the most part they seem pretty cool, but I suppose in GPL, it's just a matter of hanging back, and waiting for people ahead to spin :)
