    Hi,

I was just wondering with the Champions league starting again soon and the collapse of ITV digital which ITV stations will show the Champions league on Tuesday nights especially if 2 British teams are playing at the same time.
I have a UK FTA card and also want to know is there anyway to get ITV 2 or is there any chance that ITV 2 will be made FTA in the UK so we can access it here and enjoy full access to the Champions league.

    Cheers

ITV 2 is being made available fta on the new version of digital Terrestrial tv in the UK(digital tv through your aerial). So if you are near enough to NI, or down here in the South East , you could investigate that route.

It would seem unfair if as a result it was not on the BBC card for Sky.It is unlikely that it will be as when ITV concluded a deal with Sky for carriage on their EPG system in the UK, ITV stung Sky's tail by charging them for ITV2.
That meant that channel would only appear on a uk sub card only:(

    No Andy,

ITV2 is a Family Pack-and-above channel on UK subscriptions. It was part of the deal to get ITV1 on Sky Digital in the first place, that Sky pay ITV for ITV2 to appear on Sky.

So it will still have to be TV3 on Tuesday... :(

If there is two games on a Tuesday night would ITV show the 2nd game on ITN or Granada plus, because from what I am aware they have made a commitment to show every British team in action in the Champions league live. If a game was shown on one of these channels would these channels be blocked for ROI viewers, in other words would you need your FTA card to access them.

They may have committed to showing them live, but remember the federal structure of ITV.

Say for instance, Liverpool and Arsenal are playing on the same night, there is nothing stopping Carlton, Anglia, Meridian regions showing the Arsenal game and Granada, Yorkshire, HTV and Border and all the rest showing the Liverpool game.
The regions will decide what is the best night to show games. Like if Celtic get through, you can bet your bottom dollar that Scottish will be alternating coverage each week, one week Tuesday, next week Wednesday.

And anyway, with an FTA card, we can watch all regions!

I cannot see ITV using ITN or any of the Granada channels to show Champions League matches. If there are two games featuring UK teams then they will most likely show one on ITV1 and the other on ITV2.

If they did show a game on Granada plus and it was blocked to us in the republic, then the FTV card would not help as it would not give access to that channel.

    Interesting fact.
ITV2 is advertised as part of the latest Irish package in the new "Get Sky Installed" pamphlet (Yellow). The previous blue pamphlet didn't have it advertised at all.
Mayde they were ready to switch it on for us, and then ran into rights issues.
We have a case for false advertising. (Or do we?)

ITN and Granada plus are not affiliated to the Independent Television Network(ITV) or the IBA so they don't have rights to show the matches. (Just the same as ITV digital is not affiliated to the Independent Television Network, as the Nationwide League found out to its cost)

but ITN is to be renamed ITV News soon

    Some clarity needed.

Granada Plus is owned by Granada Sky Broadcasting, a joint venture between Sky and Granada. No connection whatsoever with ITV, only that Granada is the main shareholder.

ITN is owned by Carlton, Daily Mail and General Trust, Granada, Reuters and United Business Media, but ITN will be taken over almost completely by Carlton and Granada in the near future. Must still be shown as independent, no chance of a game here on the ITN News Channel, but who knows after it is rebranded ITV News Channel? Not likely, BBC News and Sky News would be up in arms.

There is no such thing as the Independent Television Network, though there is the ITV Network Centre, which has David Liddiment at the helm, but this is only a place for scheduling, commissioning and purchasing programmes.

The IBA (Independent Broadcasting Authority) died in 1990, and was replaced by the ITC (Independent Television Commission) The ITC's first act was to get rid of Thames, TV-am, TVS and TSW in favour of Carlton, GMTV, Meridian and Westcountry, in the 1992 "highest bidder" franchise round.

The Football Leagues downfall was the fact that in the contract that was signed, there was no mention that Carlton and Granada would guarantee the fee if ITV Digital went under. It was in the draft, but not in the contract. Silly people.

Hope that clears up some things.

    I stand corrected...

Alerted to me on another forum.....

    http://www.itv-football.co.uk/articles/news/story.html?articleid=234582

    UEFA Champions League on ITV

ITV's exclusive, award-winning, coverage of UEFA Champions League football kicks off this month with a new transmission pattern across the broadcasters two channels, ITV1 and ITV2.

ITV1's live coverage of the competition moves to Tuesday evenings from Wednesday evenings with ITV2 showing the pick of the Wednesday live games. The ITN News Channel will also carry live games featuring British clubs.

ITV1 begins the First Group Stage on Tuesday September 17 with live coverage of Liverpool's trip to Valencia, presented by Desmond Lynam. ITV2 will show Arsenal's clash with Borussia Dortmund, presented by Angus Scott. Highlights of both games will be shown on ITV1 later in the evening in a programme presented by Matt Smith.

On Wednesday September 18, ITV2 will screen live coverage of Manchester United v Maccabi Haifa with Jim Rosenthal hosting the action from Old Trafford, while the ITN News Channel will carry live coverage of Dynamo v Newcastle United fronted by Angus Scott.

ITV1's Wednesday evening highlights programme will be presented by Gabby Logan throughout the season.

ITV2 and the ITN News Channel are free-to-air digital channels available on digital terrestrial, digital satellite and cable services.

I thought it would be a possibilty if the rebrand had taken place, but it will surely spike up the viewing figures for ITN News Channel!

I should add that that up there is wrong, ITV2 is NOT a FTA channel on Sky Digital. For viewing in the UK you need the Family Pack minimum, and its not viewable at all down here.

Is ITN News Channel available on Digital Terrestrial, I dont think it is, can anyone confirm?

Only 6am-9am at the moment, though it is due to be on throughout the day when the freeview consortium gets going. Actually - I don't know why they couldn't put it where the ITV Sports Channel used to be now. They would need to secure GMTV's agreement to run it from 6am-9.25 however, if they wanted to keep it on one channel the whole time.

It's on satellite 24 hours a day, but the question above was about digital terrestrial.

Indeed...as a news junkie I never thought I would say this about a news channel, but the ITN News Channel is...well...boring. Its underfunded and as a news channel only seems to go through the motions, unlike the good efforts Sky News, CNN, and BBC World do.

The rebrand should be happening probably around the time ITV's new "Celeberties" image launches in October (which we in UTV-land will hopefully be spared), but ITV probably do not want to wait till then.

Here's some games that are coming up on ITN:

Wed 18/9: Newscastle - Dynamo Kiev - Newscastle
Wed 25/9: Arsenal - PSV Eindhoven
    Wed 2/10: Arsenal - Auxerre

will ITN or whatever it is going to be called remain FTA or will it need at least a FTV card

During the adverts on On The Ball yesterday on ITV. They Advertised the champions League as follows.

    Tuesday -

    Valencia v Liverpool ITV1 (Live)
Arsenal V Borussia Dortmund ITV2 (Live)

    Wednesday -

Man Utd v Maccabi Haifa ITV2 (LIve)
Dynamo Kiev v Newcastle ITN News Channel (Live)
    (CABLE ONLY)

Cable only does that mean that it will be blocked on Sky (channel 525)

Probably. And what about DTT? Or maybe ITN won't be 24 hours a day at that stage. If so - a lot of people will be annoyed. I wonder if NTL ROI will have it - I would presume that they get their signal from DSat - so presumably not.

Still, it is a bit unusual to hear "ITN" mentioned on ITV1 these days!

its news all the way on DSat :-(
i checked the epg for wednesday (and tuesday too just in case)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,732 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Erm, the matches are on next week, not this week.

We'll have to wait until Wednesday evening to see if ITN are showing games on Dsat.

As we discussed in another forum, I believe its possible for NTL ROI to get their signals from Langley, which is carrying the game. So maybe...or maybe rights issues will intervene. I'll check my EPG on Wednesday to see.

As for ITN...indeed, but remember it won't last for long. Oh for the days of "From the studios of ITN"!

With ITN news channel going to be screening live champions League matches, i would like to know if they will be shown in the Republic or will they be blocked for us.
    Does anyone know.

I think there will be no difference between what is shown in ROI and the UK. Remember that ITN is Free-To-Air, so they can't use the EPG to block it. They may be able to temporarily remove it from the EPG but it would still be available in "Other Chanels"

If, as it seems, the DSat version of ITN will NOT carry the football, they will presumably either have alternative programming - or nothing at all.

Not able to answer your question.

    However :

I'm not worried about ROI as I'm BRITISH not Irish-Long live Paisley and the DUP!!!)

There are many other forums around to make political views. This forum is for discussion of satellite television.
