I think it would be great if people posted verbs up here and included the past, present and future of each one... I will go off now and find the correct spelling for one...

"Passé historique" -- isn't that the one used in novels and stuff, on the leaving cert paper there's usually a piece partially in it.

Yeh smiles, its only used in stories n stuff to talk about the past. You only need to know how to recognise it for the leaving.

Subjunctif is used to express verbs of wishing or wanting. e.g:

Mon prof veut que je fasse mes devoirs.
    (faire):)

No need to know all of them. You might sound like 'Jacouille' in ' Les visiteurs' if you speak with passe historique ;)

    Oui certe !

    Jeffouille la fripouille.

I hope you don't mind me being pedantic but....!

The ending for the first person singular in the future tense is
"- ai", not "- ais" ("- ais" is used in the imperfect and the conditional).

So it should be je donnerai, je chercherai, j'aurai soif, etc.

    - andro

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,967 ✭✭✭Dun

I only included the Passé Historique & Present Subjunctive with être cause it's such a common verb, and it is needed in those tenses (even if just for recognition purposes) for the leaving cert. The present subjuntive is also used after other set phrases, e.g. bien que (even though)

Je ne vais pas manger chez lui bien que j'aie faim.
(I'm not going to eat at his house even though I'm hungry).

    Anyway, next installment:

    ALLER - to go

    Present
    Je vais
    Tu vas
    Il va
    Nous allons
    Vous allez
    Ils vont

    Passé Composé
    NB. USE ETRE!
    Je suis allé
Tu es allé(e) - extra 'e' for girls
    Il est allé
    Elle est allée
    Nous sommes allé(e)s - extra 'e' if it's a bunch of girls
Vous êtes allé(e)(s) - extra e for girls again, 's' if it's more than one person
    Ils sont allés
    Elles sont allées

    Imparfait
    J'allais
    Tu allais
    Il allait
    Nous allions
    Vous alliez
    Ils allaient

    Futur / Conditionnel
    J'irai / irais
    Tu iras / irait
    Il ira / irait
    Nous irons / irions
    Vous irez / iriez
    Ils iront / iraient

    Bonne chance! ;)

    Vouloir - to want/wish

    Présent
    Je veux
    Tu veux
    Il veut
    Nous voulons
    Vous voulez
    Ils veulent

    Passé Composé
J'ai voulu, tu as voulu, etc..
    (Continue with avoir as above)

    Imparfait
    Je voulais
    Tu voulais
    Il voulait
    Nous voulions
    Vous vouliez
    Ils voulaient

    Futur / Conditionnel

    Je voudrais / voudrais
    Tu voudras / voudrais
    Il voudra / voudrait
    Nous voudrons / voudrions
    Vous voudrez / voudriez
    Ils voudront / voudraient

supposed 2 be doing honours french but i dont no what the imperfect is or when it should be used!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 990 ✭✭✭lili

well, the imperfect exprime an action in the past but not finished or a repetitive action, something you do often.

il aimait écouter chanter les oiseaux.

if you apply the passé simple (for a récit) for this sentence, that will mean that he does nomore do it.

il aima écouter chanter les oiseaux.

the same for the passé composé, the action is in the past but finished.

il a aimé écouter chanter les oiseaux.

    voilà:)
i hope you have understood me, but zefrog will explain to you better than me i think:)

Are you kidding? Tell me you're not doing the Leaving next June at least! The Imperfect (Imparfait) is Junior Cert material. It's the form ending in
    -ais
    -ais
    -ait
    -ions
    -iez
    -aient

(you take the nous form of the present tense, knock of the 'ons' and add the relevant ending. This applies to all verbs with the sole exception of Etre. The stem for that is ét (e.g. tu étais))

The Imperfect is a past tense and is basically used for descriptions, actions with no specified duration, interrupted or uncompleted actions (I was watching television when the phone rang - the was watching was interrupted, so it's translated "Je regardais la télé quand le téléphone a sonné") and for when we use "-ing" - I was going = j'allais, or used to - I used to go to school at eight o'clock = J'allais au lycée à 8 heures

the passé composé was good but try the passé antérieur for the first verb and the passé simple for the second verb, you will hear how that sound better:)

Are you telling me that "quand il eut terminé ses devoirs, il alla jouer." is more fitting than "quand il a terminé ses devoirs, il est allé jouer"?

It's too out of context to ever have guessed that. Would a French person normally have put that there?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 990 ✭✭✭lili

of course dun, my daughter answered to this question:)

if you want use the passé composé, this sentence should be changed by :
il est allé jouer après avoir terminé ses devoirs.

What I mean is, when would you say that in the Passé Historique? I can't say I've ever consciously heard a French person make use of the Passé Historique.

yes, you're right dun, the academic french is nomore often used except by political people or people literal culture.
i gave you the proust version of this sentence, sure thing, in a conversation, people will use the passé composé who is less narrative:)
