Yeah, Zelda for the SNES was my first. Man, I went a whole month without food, tv, toilet or social life playing that game. Without doubt one of the best game I've ever played (which isn't saying much, but still :))

Ocarina of Time on N64. I made my little brother do all the temples for me:p

The Legend of Zelda on the Nes (not Snes :P) Still remember how to do those lost woods + mountains, up, left, up, left and then up, up, up, up, up :) Came on a smashing all gold cartridge as well.

My younger bro did zelda III in one sitting just to get 000 on the save game, he also did Super Metroid in under 1 hour(or was it 3 ? whichever gave u the special ending) and collected 100% of items in the same game, he's a bit mad at times :)

I used to have a loathing for RPG's. That was until I actually played one. The first I played and beat was Shining Force 2 on the Megadrive. Ever since I've been hooked on RPG's and is the main reason I have 8 RPG's beside my TV ready to be beaten.

Zelda 1 on the NES. Man alive that was a brilliant game, throwing bombs everywhere to try and blow up walls and then when you eventually completed it there was a new even HARDER version with all the stuff in stupid diffcult places.

The SNES version of Zelda was one of the best games I ever played as well. Would Monkey Island 1 and 2 be classed as RPGs? Or are they adventure games? They were piss hard yokes never managed to beat Monkey Island 2 though I did manage to beat my head off the screen frequently while playing it.

Oh christ .... me thinks I still have a vic20 tucked away somewhere

/me runs off to find it and see if he has "adventure"

Ah ... the Vic20 ... that bastion of computing on which I started my way to programming at the tender age of 9 on BASIC in-between games of "blitz" and Bongo using that 20k (yes ... 20kb) ram extension.

Final Fantasy VII...man, I played that so much I actually mastered the Knights of Round materia in order to beat that massive green underwater boss. The other red boss was easier though I thought...didn't need mastered materia at all... Great game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,007 ✭✭✭stevoslice

    Super Hydlide on the megadrive

Bet ya never heard of that one b4,

Finished FFVII in under 45 hours first time playin it,
Beat the ultimate Weapon but didn't bother to try and beat the other two,

Got far enough on FFVIII but i just stopped playin it in the end.

You mastered KOTR to beat Emerald Weapon?? Why? I mastered KOTR eventually, but only to get a second master summon. Its much MUCH MUCH MUCH easier just to master the Mime materia... plus, you dont have to pay MP for the second casting :)

As for Ruby weapon, hes only easy if you know how to do it - ie go into the battle with two character dead and then use status magic (Hades) and phoenix to bring your character back :)

Final VIII - happened to me as well. Got to the end, and didnt finish it for a couple of years. Finished it a few months ago, and the end CG is really good, well worth seeing.

I see what you mean Asuka, but I combined the KOTR with MP Plus materia in order to get 9,999 damage for every single hit; 13 hits making just under 130,000 points of damage. Mime was more powerful but each hit only made about 7-8,000; or about 100,000 damage hits (which, when mimed, makes about 200,000 altogether :)). My main reason for mastering KOTR however, was to send all of my mastered red materia to that old guy's observatory in that tribal place (can't remember now), in order to get the Master Materia which allowed me to cast the KOTR an infinite number of times (assuming you had enough MP). I wanted to get Master Materia for all the different types of materia available (red, green and yellow. You couldn't get blue). However, I didn't realise that upon beating Emerald Weapon, you were actually given the Master Materias as your prize! All that time wasted!

The 1st RPG i finished was shining force 1 on the megadrive (it ROCKED!! best battle system ive EVER seen) so you can remove my previous statement saying zelda, and can you tell me where i can get a working shining force2? ive always wanted to finish that, hope it's as good as the 1st......

I mastered Knights of the Round twice! I have 3 Master magics, 3 master summons and 3 master commands! All in 78 hours in my lastest game, which is like my 7th time playing the whole way through.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,507 ✭✭✭Asuka

Hehe. I got 3 master magics and 3 master commands, but only two master summons - i had achieved absolutely EVERYTHING there was to achieve at that stage, and i couldnt be ar$ed spending a few extra hours to master all my summon magic again for no particular reason :) Besides, with my chosen equipment, i didnt have room for ALL the stuff i wanted (ultimate weapons on everyone = 8 slots each, but ziedrich armor on everyone = no slots at all (best armor in the game, can only be got by stealing from the turks)). On the other hand, i did spend a few hours wandering around the world morphing monsters to get my hands on a whole pile of sources to max out my stats, so another while mastering my summons couldnt have been that bad.

I remember Super Hydlide.. I only rented it though so didn't get to finish it.

First RPG i finished was some sort of tilebased thing on the C64. I was 7 or 8 so you'll excuse me if I can't remember. :-)

First one I can remember was either Shining in The Darkness or Sword of Vermillion on the MD. The MD hadn't as many RPGs as the SNES but gosh were the difficult. Landstalker pretty much broke me down. I still wake up screaming thinking about the last castle in that one.

    FFVII - Ahh.. Great game.
I thought Ruby was harder than Emerald..

Final Fantasy VII for me aswell. I enjoyed it because it had a brilliant storyline, likeable characters and enjoyable gameplay. Not because you can spend twenty hours levelling up to beat the weapons and get master materia, you absolute NERD Adam!! Worse still is the stats thing, getting the power/luck/speed sources etc that put your stats up by ONE until you reach 255 or whatever? Euuughh!

I remember battling emerald for ages then he used that...........i thought maybe if i used mBarrier or something it might help but i don't think it does so you have to use final attack with phonix or life. Or just come back with about 7 master summons and Knights of the round the thing to death.

PS: Member when that weapon got shot in the head with the junon cannon!? That rocked, i think it was called crystal weapon and the one that attacked midgar was called diamond weapon. ;)

A little known RPG called Dink Smallwood was the first RPG I remember completeing :)

Luckily for me, you can make addons for it also, so the game lasts longer (the game still continues, even after you completed the main objective... see if you can get the kickass secret weapon :p)

It's been freeware for a while now, so it can't hurt to try it out

    it's at: www.rtsoft.com

that also has a few dmods also. Be warned that the game itself is around 25MB, so make sure you've got something else to do while you wait :D

It was called "Adventure" for the Spectrum.
    Good old text based RPG's...
Thats what got me into them in a biggish way. The fact that when I first started playing games, and they were all made of text, meant that when a new trend called "Graphics" came into play you always went "Wow, cool mad yay nice wan ta thx gg!"

You will not beat the good old text RPG's. There is still a game to this very day for the Spectrum that Im trying to get my grubby hands on (I have the tape upstairs in the attic but I cant find the damn thing) and the name escapes me. Was a text / graphics RPG where you played some Cloaked Warrior / Elf or something trapped in a forest. You selected a rake of abilities, a weapon and items before you go along the multi pathed RPG world, meeting little perils all over the shop, getting into fights and the likes... I WANT IT, AND I WANT IT NOW - But it's more than likely no-one will know what it is.

As for other RPG's, FFVII, FFVIII, Legend Of Zelda, MegaMan (Loads of them, and yes they were RPG's), Knightmare on the C64 (2 Versions) and the Amiga Version (Was really ****ing scary - at the time at least)

I have so many C64 / Speccy RPG's it's not funny, and the fact they are all text based means it's even LESS Funny, but they are classics none-the-less :D
