i used to hate irish, then a wonderful secondary school teacher gave me confidence and coherence when speaking and writing and now i love it

Why is the poll closed? Ah well, doesnt matter. I did my irish test today, and I think I wont fail this time! I like the language alot but its hard to learn off stuff sometimes. Just the sound of the language is great and the bit of drink normally brings it out of a ppl:)

By the way, the Irish for 'poll' would be 'vótáil' or 'pobalbhreith' - not 'póll' (which is closer to the Irish word for "hole", in fact...)

Why use fón instead of guthán - guth meaning voice?

What was really somewhat annoying (well not really, but in theory ) was seeing voting campaigns up saying "VOTE NO" or whatever, with the irish translation "VÓTÁIL NÍL".

Literally, that's "VOTE THERE IS NOT".

They should really ask people who know irish instead of just using a dictionary, so they could differentiate between sea and tá etc.

Though to be honest I don't know how you would say "vote no" very well.
How about just "aontaigh" or "scrios", or something?

Not everything can be directly translated to Irish. From what I've seen, "Vótáil Níl" is the best translation for "Vote No" that there is. I'm sure they thought about it rather than just consulting a dictionary. Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin to name but two, have plenty of fluent Gaeilge/Irish speakers.

Besides which, the translations for 'Yes' and 'No' on the voting form or machine is 'Tá' and 'Níl', so it's telling you 'vote for this option'.
