What is this business with Cool Newbie and Quick Newbie and all that? Yes, I know it counts up from the number of posts but the adjectives are a bit adolescent in a nerdish kind of way. Any number of other hierarchies could be applied....

this was discussed before the move to VB, and someone even suggested using binary!! :)

If anyone could come up with a consistent set of titles, I'd imagine it would be Yoda - let's see 'em!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Yoda

Please point me to a list of the categories and the number of postings required to acheive each level of avatar.

    admiral
    captain
    commander
    lt. commander
    leutennent (sp?)
    ensign
    crewman
    acadamy cadett.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Yoda

This would be the Star Trek list:

    Admiral (No Life)
    Captain (Freak)
    Commander (Insane Poster)
    Lt. Commander (Crazy Poster)
    Lieutenant (Fast Newbie)
    Ensign (Cool Newbie)
    Crewman (Newbie)
    Cadet (Guest)

I was going to look at a few other hierarchies (none of them Catholic), but did think that the Star Trek hierarchy would be a candidate. Shall we try to collect some more?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,049 ✭✭✭Cloud

If it's not too much trouble...

We used to have just 4 categories (Captain = Admin, Commander = Mod, and then Lieutenant and Ensign). The Star Trek / military ranks are still good...

We can always add or remove levels (they number of posts required can be changed / deleted if necessary).

    1.Civilian (Newbie)
    2.New Recruit (Cool Newbie)
    3.Training (Fast Newbie)
    4.Dedicated (Crazy Poster)
    5.Experienced (Insane Poster)
    7.Believer (Freak)
    8.Freedom Fighter (No Life)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,488 ✭✭✭SantaHoe

I have to agree, the current rank/titles aren't exactly flattering :(
The StarTrek ranks were good, (RedShirt, Borg etc).
I was going to look at a few other hierarchies (none of them Catholic)
    That'd be a blast :D
    -Priest
    -Parish Priest
    -Cardinal
    -Bishop
    -Pope
    -Saint
Although I'd imagine most people would find it distasteful :(

What about a Jedi ranking system? :)
    -Hopefull
    -Trainee
    -Apprentice
    -Jedi
    -Jedi Master
    Or something like that (?)

Whatever it is, make it something that everyone will 'get', I'd say a lot of boards users would be confused by smak's bosco titles :P

    7.Beleaver (Freak)
    8.Freedom Fighter (No Life)

    i support tis opinion/product. good idea!:D

    This would need some editing.

    Freedom Fighter (No Life)
    Believer (Freak)
Experienced? (Insane Poster) (this is just an adjective)
Dedicated? (Crazy Poster) (this is just an adjective)
    Trainee (Fast Newbie)
    Recruit (Cool Newbie)
    Civilian (Newbie)

But if we're going to go military I don't like "Freedom fighter". And the Star Trek ranks are better.

    Rome?

    Deity (No Life)
    Emperor (Freak)
    Senator (Insane Poster)
    ??? (Crazy Poster)
    ??? (Fast Newbie)
    ??? (Cool Newbie)
    Plebe (Newbie)

Star Trek seems nicest so far.

I understand that the Irish Military and the Irish Civil Service have equivalent ranks (a Sargeant Major equals an Assistant Principal or something like that). Would that be too weird?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,626 ✭✭✭smoke.me.a.kipper

    good the titles jedi are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,524 ✭✭✭✭Gordon

Or for fun, hows about a cooking theme...

    Nuked (No Life)
    Fried (Freak)
    Roasted (Insane Poster)
    Boiled (Crazy Poster)
    Melted (Fast Newbie)
    Lukewarm (Cool Newbie)
    Cold Fish (Newbie)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,651 ✭✭✭Spunog UIE

i likes the titles the way they are really. maybe just change cool and fast newbie to something else. other than that they are fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭Inspector Gadget

...the current ones have no recognisable continuity to them - at least most people are familiar with pseudo-military ranking schemes, but there's no inherently obvious order or precedence for at least some of the current titles, for example:

    No Life
    Freak
    Insane Poster

...or am I the only one missing something very obvious?

It'll be interesting to see if the stars get replaced by comm badges...

It's something we've been debating over for a while [I've merged two thread together to form this one]... After many possibilities ranging from Bosco titles (smak) to religious (not well favoured) the Trek ones seemed most popular.

    Here's the orders:

    Admiral (Administrator)
    yellow_star.gifyellow_star.gifyellow_star.gifyellow_star.gif
    Vice-Admiral (Super Moderator)
    yellow_star.gifyellow_star.gifyellow_star.gif
    Captain (Moderator)
    white_star.gifwhite_star.gifwhite_star.gifwhite_star.gif
    Commander (Community Moderator)
    white_star.gifwhite_star.gifwhite_star.gif
    Lieutenant-Commander (1000)
    white_star.gifwhite_star.gifblue_star.gif
    Lieutenant (500)
    white_star.gifwhite_star.gif
    Lieutenant-Junior Grade (250)
    white_star.gifblue_star.gif
    Ensign (100)
    white_star.gif
    Cadet 4th Year (50)
    blue_star.gifblue_star.gifblue_star.gifblue_star.gif
    Cadet 3rd Year (25)
    blue_star.gifblue_star.gifblue_star.gif
    Cadet 2nd Year (10)
    blue_star.gifblue_star.gif
    Cadet 1st Year (0)
    blue_star.gif

It's pretty much the same levels as before except I've removed the 5 posts level and added 10 and 25 (old titles are somewhere at the top of this thread).

More details on Starfleet ranks here:

    http://www.tangofleet.org/ranks/ranks2.htm

I've used the existing stars for now, I'll add the proper "pips" later.

    John.

I'd prefer to be turned into a newt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,660 ✭✭✭Baz_

hey cloud, do you know the way on star trek they have the little round "pins" on the collar of their uniform that you could tell their rank from, why not change the stars to them? That would be even cooler (read geekier).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

I'm not sure the vegan/anti capitialist/anti war part of the boards.ie membership would go for such imperialist-military
style gradings...(no sense of humour..;) )

    Mike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,049 ✭✭✭Cloud

    "Pips", "pins", "toma(y)to", "toma(h)to".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,761 ✭✭✭✭Winters

So. I am guessing you guys like Star Trek? You should have used Star wars titles. I could have been

    Jedi Knight :D
Admins = Jedi High Council etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,049 ✭✭✭Cloud

And then what would Yoda be? :) He'd be a lowly Stormtrooper or something...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Argh, Star Trek! Kill it! Kill it! Send it to hell!

lol, ya id go for ANGELWHORES idea.

will this RANKING sysem not PROMOTE spammage ? all to attain rank of Captain and so on ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

I'm not a fan of Star Trek, but the titles are not that bad. There is more of them, which is good, and I think that over time, the blue/white/gold star issue will sort itself out.

But I can see the argument that its too nerdy and geeky. Some of us dont want to be reminded of that fact!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭Dustaz

Ugh, these trek stuff make me feel all geeky. *urge to grow a beard rising*

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,488 ✭✭✭SantaHoe

Bah, I demand a seperate rank for +4000 posts :(
    First Officer or something 0_o
    Or eehh... Borg drone :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Pff, you're all geeks. Someone play the In Denial card.

My title makes me feel like such a noob now. Ugh, Junior
When can I start paying for my custom title? ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,049 ✭✭✭Cloud

Yep I thought there might be some issues with Community Moderators getting bumped up to Commander with only 10 posts say, so that's why I think a change in rules may be necessary to say that community forums will only be given when requested by at least 1 lieutenant-junior grade and 4 ensigns ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,684 ✭✭✭Kraken

nothing against star trek but i dislike these titles to long. there should also be more after 1000+ oh well guess ill have to put up with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,049 ✭✭✭Cloud

Yeah I was thinking about Lt-Cmdr, Lt, Lt-Jr Grade, etc. - can change it to those later possibly.

Looking for pips now, don't worry about the newbies having 4 stars, their pips will be much smaller soon.

Ive gotta say that they really dont reflect the boards :/

Plus, should the moderator title not stay as is? Captain and Commander are a little ambigious arent they?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,525 ✭✭✭JustHalf

Aw yikes. I'm a friggin' Lieutenant Commander. Someone bring me a death ray.

I can see sad people using this as an excuse to post spam; "to increase rank!". You sure this was a good idea?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Yeah, I'm likin the mental institution idea. Senior Loon. Slightly Crazy. Off His Head. etc etc.
