I've used www.thefreesite.com several times without suffering any ill consequences .... it even has a page showing other freebie websites ... (a lot of the sites are for tangible freebies ... but nonetheless, I like it)

How to run Windows ME well, 5.0
    http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/36435.html
Lots of tips that also apply to Win95/98 and links to various utils & KB articles

Adaware from http://www.lavasoft.nu/ or Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/ scans your system and removes spyware, often a cause of system problems.

Sisoft Sandra from www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/sandra analyses and troubleshoots your system, e.g. Bios, 3D rendering, OpenGL, Direct X, CPU, performance, overclocking etc

Regcleaner is often recommended and for good reason.

WCPUID from www.h-oda.com reports details of your chipset, CPU and motherboard. Handy before installing new drivers.

Motherboard Monitor from http://mbm.livewiredev.com monitors system temperature, fan health and warns of failure. Handy if you overclock.

Xteq Systems X-Setup from www.xteq.com/downloads/index.html helps you to change hard to reach games and system settings.

Belarc Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html analyses and reports on all details of your system and can identify with serial numbers most of your hardware components. Great if you’ve lost the details of your modem or video card etc.

type hwinfo /ui and press enter

Personal firewalls are a good idea to block unwanted access to your PC. Zone Alarm is available at www.zonelabs.com/products/za/index.html while Tiny Personal Firewall is available at www.tinysoftware.com Sygate free personal firewall available from www.sygate.com and is the free firewall which I have found best with Windows ME (recommended by other forum users to me).

System restore remover does just that http://defsoft.iwarp.com/

http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/ gives you a free virus check

Pop-up stopper helps to control ad banners and pop-ups www.panicware.com, as does Adshield from http://www.adshield.org/

Win Rescue helps crash recovery and registry restoration http://regvac.com/frescuem.htm

Rampage frees up RAM when overload is reached http://www.jfitz.com/software/RAMpage/

Microsoft Producer is a free add-on for Powerpoint 2002 and 2003 which lets you enhance slides with a narrative track or audio and/or video resulting in a side-by-side demonstration.

1Tabview is a plug-in for IE which lets you define sets of web pages that, with one click, will open at once within the 1Tabview window.

    www.openoffice.org

open source replacement for WORD, EXCEL , POWERPOINT
~ 70MB download - but that's only half the size of SP3 for Office 2000
Allows you to save files as .pdf too & menus are as close as you can get with getting sued for "look and feel"

Note: it does not replace Access - Outlook - but if you have an Exchange server the CAL's will allow you to run Outlook.

IMSecure is designed to keep instant messaging secure. It supports AOL, MSN, Yahoo and Trillian messenger but not IRC or ICQ.

Long filenames under pure DOS http://www.odi.ch/prog/prog.php

Am using this to make a Win98 recovery CD.
    Boot from the CD and then Lcopy D:* C: /a /r /s /y
You can also use it to "mirror" your OS to a folder on a different partition. - Unlike Ghost or Partimage you can see every file native. I have not tried it with NTFSDOS yet..

On the gateway site there is an update utility that sometimes works (esp is you have an intel m/b eg: Dell) - if it doesn't get upset at the BIOS or IE version then it will try to download drivers for recognised devices from thier FTP site.
    http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/assistant/default.asp
    also http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com sometimes has drivers

I found this little gem today called the Tray Wizard, freeware from http://www.traywizard.com .

It allows you to minimise running applications to the notification area, by right clicking on minimise, so they do not take up room in the taskbar.

Its great for outlook and the likes.

The Crap Cleaner is freeware and as well as cleaning out your internet stuff, it also cleans all your Temp files and index.dat files that slowly build up, as well as removing all bits left over from uninstallations.

Works under Windows, Mac OS X, BeOS, Debian GNU/Linux, Mandrake Linux,Fedora Core, Familiar Linux, YOPY/Linupy, Zaurus, SuSE Linux, Red Hat Linux, WinCE / PocketPC, and a few more.

anyone know of an application that will shut a pc down automatically at a certain time of the day?

Which version of windows? Is shutdown.exe available? (Open a command prompt and run `shutdown /?` to find out.) If it is, you should be able to use the Scheduler to run it.

You may or may not have noticed that after the SP1 update you can no longer use Search in the right-click context menu:

    image6.png

.......Yeah I only noticed it today, too

    But here is a fix:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/restore-the-search-item-to-the-folder-context-menu-in-windows-vista-sp1/

got the registry, find HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\find and delete the LegacyDisable Key or change its value to 0.

    Thats it.

Secunia Software Inspectors are the first internal vulnerability scanners that focus solely on detection and assessment of missing security patches and end-of-life programs.
    http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning
Scans most common programs and then gives links to the patches for them.

Everyday it has a new piece of software that usually cost money for free.
Not always good software but always worth checking every day.

Mukki's Vista Tweaks - adding to sticky

vista is not a crappy OS

when you install vista on a pc you have 36 processess running in the background (taskmanager bottom left corner)

when you buy a vista pc or laptop they usually have so much crap installed that you have well over 80 background processess

    1) uninstall norton and mcafee and reboot
    2) use autoruns (google it) to disable all non microsoft items
    except
    anything on drivers tab
    dell quickset if installed
    lexmark printing service if installed

    3)run services.msc and disable...
    server
    computer browser
    error reporting service
    readyboost
    security center
    windows defender
superfetch (only if you have less then 1gb ram)

    4) run msconfig and disable
    all items on startup tab
    on tools tab disable UAC
on tools tab lauch security center and set it not notify or display icon

    5) run firewall.cpl and make sure the firewall is on
    6) install an antivirus

    optional
    7)right click my computer
    properties
    advanced system settings
    performance settings->settings button
    click adjust for best performance
tick the last 3 and tick show thumbnails instead of icons

    optional
    8) right click desktop and hide desktop icons, right click on taskbar and add the desktop toolbar instead

    optional
    9) remove back ground wallpaper

    10) on a laptop click on the battery icon (beside time) and make sure its set to performance on balanced, NOT the "power saver" setting as it tries to reduce precessor speed by 50%

Note: if you encounter any problems tap f8 while booting up launch startup repair and run system restore

    (edit on request)

doing all of the above will make vista fly even with only 512mb ram.

but if you are still not happy buy more ram, its dirt cheap, and easy to change

The official Microsoft SysInternals page has lots of useful little goodies. Highlights include:
    • the Windows XP Powertoys (particularly the Alt-Tab & Desktop Manager powertoys)
    • Desktops - a brilliant & tiny app (62K!) for Vista/Win7 that lets you have 4 desktop panels by giving each one its own explorer.exe process instead of the elaborate juggling game that other tools like Virtual Desktop Manager use to simulate the same effect
    • Autoruns - gives you proper visibility & control over what runs at startup
    • Disk2vhd - great for test environments, lets you create a VHD from a physical disk that you can then use in a virtual machine for testing changes, etc.

Probably more useful for technically-minded folk than the average user, but well worth a look either way.
