Although no announcement has been made, there's a test label 4410 on 11856 V 27.500 2/3 showing the Sky logo but with EPG data from the French channel TV5.

Fingers crossed. It's a very good channel for Francophiles.

I know It's a French TV channel. so obviously all the programmes are in that language (I don't speak it, but my sister Caz is fluent) so are there any decent progrqmmes?

If I may lower the intellectual tone of the thread does TV5 show porn?Cheers:p

    Hi Jez,
Why not check the Lyngsat website for information on the frequencies used by Sky Digital.
These new test transmissions that start, are normally reported on ICDG or D/S forums.
The site you quoted from normally "Lifts" articles from both ICDG and D/S and post them as their own. Anyhow, Happy Huntin' with the frequencies...............

    Lyngsat's transponder list at

    http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.shtml

is great for checking for new tests. Just use the frequencies on the list and see if you find anything interesting. Also Wildsat is usually very quick off the mark at spotting tests. It's at

    http://www.wildsat.com/others.htm

There's lots of info about TV5 at http://www.tv5.org/europe/ but it's in French. They show a good mix of programmes - lots of news and films which are subtitled in French (I know that sounds strange, but I find it much easier to understand written French than spoken French). They used to have a great music show called Taratata, but I think it's finished.

If TV5 does launch on Sky Digital, hopefully it will encourage other European channels such as TVE (Spain), RTP (Portugal), RAI (Italy) and Welle TV (German) to get on board. Sky Digital could do with a little European diversity.

    Good one Damo :D:D:D:D

But seriously, when you see channels like TV5, TVE etc, it makes you think how great a decent Irish World channel could be.

I know our broadcasting companies don't have the resources of those big European channels, but there's an Irish audience all over the world (particularly UK and the US) who would be willing to pay for a high news content station (not old Glenroe repeats !!)

I reckon that an Irish channel could survive if it was of high enough quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 574 ✭✭✭PacMan

    Agreed Charles.
However I dont want the mods. to inform me to keep this TV5 thread on topic, *but* what could RTE possibly fill its schedule with?
TV5 would indeed be a very welcome addition to the Sky EPG.
I would also like to see Arte, the french/German channel. It is still on analogue on Astra 19* and in digital on Hotbird.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,817 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

The TV5 model is good one to look at because it takes it's news programmes from several channels in different countries (France, Belgium, Canada ...).

An international Irish channel could use current affairs and news programmes from RTE1, Network 2, TV3, TG4, UTV and even BBCNI. Of course trying to get agreement between all of these channels might be a tiny bit difficult (:D ), but maybe they'd all see sense eventually.

TV5 manages to mix serious news programmes with game shows, movies, music and (occasionally) sports.

    It can be done.

Maybe RTE would be better off establishing a channel like this, rather than a 24 hour news channel as planned.

The tests seem to have disappeared, but according to olplus on the digitalspy forum, Le Monde newspaper has confirmed that TV5 will be launching soon on Sky Digital.

    Article (in French) here -

    http://www.lemonde.fr/recherche_articleweb/1,9687,270760,00.html?query=TV5&query2=&booleen=et&num_page=1&auteur=&dans=dansarticle&periode=30&ordre=pertinence&debutjour=&debutmois=&debutannee=&finjour=&finmois=&finannee=&G_NBARCHIVES=720+723

Good news for all those French language students out there.

TV5 is being replaced on NTL by E4. Great news that cable viewers can now see E4, but a real drag for fans of TV5.

All the more reason why I want to see TV5 make an appearance on Sky Digital.

Has anyone heard any news lately ? The Sky Digital tests seem to have stopped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 880 ✭✭✭ifconfig

    ho-hum! NTL dropping TV5 in favour of E4 !
What annoys me about this (although I live
in Chorus land although soon to ditch them)
is that the NTL marketing chap when quizzed
over dropping Eurosport in favour of CNBC
used the "educational value" argument as
a part justification for the substitution.
He even mentioned (if I am not mistaken) TV5
as one of the examples of an emphasis of
educational content being provided by them.
Sounds to me like he was just suiting his
argument. We all know it was a carriage
    fees issue .....

News from another board for all the frenchies in Ireland.

TV5 will recommence tests this week at 11.856/V 27.5 and 2/3, in preparation for a full launch in June.

great news. there is some good stuff on there even for those like me who don't have a word of French. namely sport

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭Lennoxschips

Sky didn't have it on before because TV5 would show France-England games. It clashed with Sky Sports. Now the BBC have bought the rights for it.

The rubgy commentary on TV5 is fantastic. They can turn a dull game into a classic. Same with the football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,817 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

    Zut Alors !!

There's just something very attractive about the French language, don't you think ?

You can say virtually anythng and it always sounds as if you're being very romantic.

    Sacre Bleu !!

What rugby/football does TV5 show?Is it domestic games or internationals? And if it is to launch at the start of June, will it have any World Cup games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,817 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

There should be some programme info at http://www.tv5.org/europe/

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 243 ✭✭CHRISTYG

Well, there IS, but it's all in French(duh!) and as for sport, I can't see that mentioned anywhere!

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

No World Cup AFAIK, but it does cover France's home games in the Six Nations rugby (relay of France Television) and some other sport which France TV has access to.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 243 ✭✭CHRISTYG

Well, here we are in the middle of June, and no sign either of the tests or a full launch. Can someone do something for me, namely e-mail TV5, and establish the facts (and I mean the FACTS, not what TV5 want to tell you) as to when/if TV5 is coming to Sky Digital!

Come on, lads, anyone up to the challenge, or was there a bit of "non truth telling" (you know what that's a euphemism for!) going on AGAIN!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 243 ✭✭CHRISTYG

Well then, as there was no answer to my challenge, I must draw the conclusion that the liars still run this forum, at the expense of people like me, who prefer that odd, quaint little thing which I think is referred to as "the truth" (whatever that means!)

Strong words Christy i think you have drawn a wrong conclusion, I have found the guys who run this forum to be people of good character.

OK, Tony. A direct challenge to you and you alone. Do you, or do you not, either know yourself, or know anyone who does know the actual truth about TV5? Once again, I stress, I mean the truth, as expressed in the oath used in a court of law "I swear by Almighty God" etc. etc.

I have no knowledge of this nor did I claim to have, I was replying to your post which I thought was an unfair assesment of the people who run this list. A discussion list is about opinions and debate surely, and calling people liars because they did not respond to your "challenge" does nothing to help the debate, it belittles us all.

Up to a point, Tony, I actually agree with you. But where we disagree- yes, opinion and debate rule, but not (at least not in my book-maybe this is being too straight!) when that debate and opinion is based on-well, let's be more polite- hearsay and speculation. I mean, I could come onto this forum and announce "RTE closes down forever tomorrow" (Don't worry lads, it is not true-just a wild example!) but not have as much as a shred of evidence. So what this (long-winded!) post is basically trying to say is- Please, don't post rumours on this forum, which patently aren't true, unless you can back them up!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

didn't TV5 themselves say they were to launch on Sky. it also got a mention in a French newspaper

Yes I agree Christy there has been some wildly speculative posts not based on any sound information in the past and this should be discouraged. I guess it's the price we must pay for an open forum. For my own part I have posted information in the past where I was unable to name the source so I guess it's down to the integrity of the individual poster.

Christy, we have a problem here, in that This is the interweb.

You cant believe all that you see or hear. Mossy is right, TV5 mentioned in some publicity that they are to launch on Sky. Where carrolls got the freq mentioned I dunno, it looks as if it was a red herring, but who knows. It still could be right.

If you remember back to the RTÉ launch, we were scurrying around the place to find the frequency that RTÉ use. Some posted a lot of misinformation, but you only have to get it right once.

Now if its a more stronger moderated board you are looking for, with less lies and "liars," you're looking in the wrong place. And this forum wouldn't be half the success it has been if we ruled with an iron fist. With the help of so many helpful folk here like Mossy and Tony, there is a lot more informed opinion and advice from good, sound and honest folk here than any other forum about TV. And I should know, I'm on quite a few of them.

Christy, I started this thread with the above message. Do you really want to brand me a liar on the basis of the above post ??

What I posted was absolute fact at the time. There WAS a test label 4410 on 11856 V 27.500 2/3 showing the Sky logo but with EPG data from the French channel TV5. The fact that the EPG info was there was neither "hearsay" nor "speculation".

That, coupled with a report in a French paper (the link is earlier in the thread), seemed to indicate that TV5 would launch pretty soon.

So it hasn't happened yet. That doesn't mean that it won't.

But this forum has always been about exchange of information, and your accusations of lies against people who report things in good faith, followed by ludicrous and childish challenges against people who post to this forum is frankly pathetic.

Everybody's opinions are valid here, but to stoop to haranguing long-term and trusted contibutors reeks of confrontatialism without any backup of reason.

If you have any new info (or even specualtion) about this topic, I look forward to reading a future post from you.

    Hear hear Charles.

Now what the hell were you doing posting at 4:06?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 Xxtreme

I contacted TV5 , (any1 think of that!!) and they gave me the following responce in french (which i translated with altavista the way) :

We received your message and we thank you.

Tv5 has wished indeed to penetrate the British market for several years. Our will, if our steps succeed, is to be present in the basic package (thus, not the extra subscription) of B Sky B In addition, since the launching of the Eurobird satellite at 28.5° , and taking into account the English legislation, it is not obligatory any more for the companies of television to have contract with Sky. If this second solution were the adopted solution, TV5 would be of course numerically clearly. At all events, the objective for TV5 is to be present in Great Britain as of this year.

    Sincere greetings,

thats what tv5 said so they intend to broadcast from eurobird FTA, i suppose.

    hope this helps

    Can anyone confirm same?

I can only confirm that it doesn't mention it on their site. If any lucky person out there is also tuned into 19.2, the connection details are:

    Europe
Satellite : Astra (cliquer pour voir l'empreinte)
Position orbitale : 19,2 degrés Est
    Polarisation : verticale
Fréquence de diffusion : 12.610 Ghz
    Symbole rate : 22000
    FEC : 5/6
Standard de diffusion : MPEG 2

I'd be very disappointed and surprised if TV5 appears as anything other than FTA, which is their preferred mode de fonctionnement (normally!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,817 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

I know this is a veerrryy long-running thread, but for fans of TV5 the news from digitalspy is that EPG tests are back -

"TV5 epg test is back on the following frequency:
    11.856V
    S/R: 27.5
    FEC: 2/3
    label id: 4410
    Picture is showing Sky logo"

Hopefully they make it to a full launch this time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,817 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

Finally there are pictures on this test.

Right now it's showing "Journal Televise France 2" with Now and Next info.

Hopefully an EPG placing will happen soon.

This is great news for those of us who would like to see more foreign language programming on Sky, particularly the main European languages.

Is there enough interest for DW, TVE, RTP etc ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭carrolls

yer the picture quality does seem excellent on tv5, no pixilisation anywhere unlike some channels like euronews and motorstv which are a disgrace image wise. Id love to see TVE, RAI, ARTE and ZDF on Sky Digital.

This is the best thing ever, and im glad its not fta as you feel like you are getting something, i too would love to see Deutschwelle,
Galavision and RAI among other, it would really fill up the epg nicely.

I have to say im glad i stuck with SKY, things seem to be finally working out, look at all the channels we are due in the next 6 months, we could soon have UTV and C4, CNX is on the way, Soundtrack channel as well as many other music channels planned, Uk history, Uk Diy, TV5, Sky one Extra, the Reality TV channel, Carlton Cinema and more i cant even remember.
    I like it.

It's not FTA???!!!! Grrrrr, that is so unfair. They have completely changed their policy then. Is it because Astra/Sky cost them so much for hosting?
