usually a good bit of debate over this, and i dont think i recall it coming up before on the boards...

and before its mentioned I do realise I'm leaving out Withnail and I, The Big Lebowski and Theres Something About Mary, along with god knows how many others, none of which are as funny as the above tho :)

It was hard to choose between the two monty python ones, but I went for holy grail based on the coconuts for horses. Story goes that they were actually going to use real horses, but their budget didnt cover it, so they used coconuts and it was funnier than any gag they may have been able to work in with a real horse.

aha someone else with the Holy Grail DVD, bloody brilliant it is :)

This is Spinal Tap(well, couldn't you tell from my avatar?).
It was very close, the other main contenders being the life of brian and holy grail.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Spinal Tap. I only wish I believed it the first time around.

Also, the DVD is worth the price just to hear the commentary alone.

    what about airplane!???
one of the true classics of spoof, it pioneered the usage of such remarks as, "Of course I'm serious...and don't call me Shirley!" and "The cockpit! ...what is it? ..."It's a small place at the front of the plane where the pilots sit, but that's not important now!"...brilliant!

That was true genius, might be a bit dated by todays standards but we will always laugh at humour and that is true humour.

    Wot no Blazing Saddles?
What about Some Like It Hot
    Duck Soup
    M Hulots Holliday
    Play it Again, Sam
    Annie Hall
    Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Plenty more out there too, but of those listed I'll (just) go with
This Is Spinal Tap, as an aging fan of Seventies Brit Metal/Rock
I thought it was a documentary the first time I saw it! :D

    Mike.

aye the spinal tap commentary is second to none (well maybe the mallrats commentary), its like watching a completly different film.. best to watch all the other extras before listening to that though, so you get the whole picture and all the jokes (getting the chauffeur wasted from deleted scenes, their hatred of marty di bergman from the post-film interviews) etc. etc.
i just had to choose life of brain cos im a quote freak, and although i absolutely love it, spinal taps a bit lacking in that department... would take away from it imo if they kept coming out with one-liners or drawn out dialogue a la python or kevin smith :)

shouldnt that be "funniest movIe of all time" ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

    South Park.

I remember seeing it for the first time; I nearly killed myself laughing.

The python films would be close behind, Life of Brian slightly ahead of The Holy Grail.

i was caught between the Life of Brian, the Holy Grail and Airplane. the Life of Brian got the vote because of the whole Jehovah, Jehovah scene. pure brilliance

The life of Brian was realy funny but the Holy Grail was way better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,681 ✭✭✭Johnny_the_fox

Freaked - one of the funnies films I ever seen away back in 1993....... (omg nearly 10 years ago)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 69 ✭✭Da_Kid

I think 'The Producers' was phukin brilliant...oh and that other 1 with Gene Wilder -- the Frankenstein spoof. The Big Lebowski should be in the poll though...I went 4 TLOB, prolly cos it was on recently...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 764 ✭✭✭Terminator

Any film with Madonna in it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,136 ✭✭✭Bob the Unlucky Octopus

Where in the unholy name of BOB is Blazing Saddles...that film is the funniest I've ever seen. "TAXI! Drive me off this picture please!" Mel Brooks = comic genius. I went for the Holy Grail as it happens, mainly because of 'Tim the enchanter', 'the black knight', the lyrics to the 'brave sir robin' song, and of course, the wonderfully taunting french.

    Life of brian

    Deffo, best quote

    "just fu(k off"

"how will we fu(k off oh lord?"

Ah man that was hard decision there so many good movies there. i went for Life of Brian though. Thats a pure funny movie!! "Welease Woderick"!! lol !:) :):)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,174 ✭✭✭[CALIBUR]

i saw life of brian but not holy grail (sounds good).

i think the best part in life or brian. when the old man in the hole stop dancing when he sees the group of people and just droped down to the hole. and also ("JUST FùCK OFF" "how will we fùck off oh lord")
    i just love that part!!

you should have read the special edition of Empire "the greatest comedies of all time".

Clerks is there (haven't see it yet so can't comment) did like Mallrats.

so is american pie and austin powers 2 (did anyone else think the first austin powers movie wasnt as good)

You left out Some Like It Hot, Trading Places.

but there are so many great comdies, have to go see The Royal Tenembaums (spelling?) hear its very funny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,608 ✭✭✭✭sceptre

    Arsenic and Old Lace

or Kind Hearts and Coronets (you may not laugh while watching it but if you are truly evil, you will laugh like an idiot after watching it - still my all-time favourite)

Holy Grail (even watched it last night). Glad for the coconuts

He obviously wasn't ever going to get everyone of them in. The ones that he has in the poll are alright.

"Don't Be a Meance to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood"

    absolutly priceless!
    I got this cheeseburger...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Havent got around to seeing all the comedies in the empire special but do intend to, clerks is in that too as are most of the comedies you mention.

South Park dont like the show so i dont think i could sit a watch a movie of it sorry.

And some like it hot is just.... (no words).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 539 ✭✭✭Yurmasyurda

Me also thinks there should be a "other" option, as one of the funniest films I've ever seen is "The Gods Must Be Crazy" it's a priceless comedy movie, infact really cos it can't be bought :)

    Tom Green rules!

or the meaning of life(monty python)
it has the "every sperm is sacred" song
    and the penis song
    Fukin brilliant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,258 ✭✭✭✭Rabies

    are you crazy.....

freddy got fingered is the worst movie ever made.... i absolutly hated it... usualy a movie is worth watching at least once... but freddy got fingered is soooooooo bad, the only reason i watched it all was to see how stupid tom green could get..... i dont mean stupid in a funny way, i mean stupid in a "his mother dropped him a lot when he was young" way..... the movie is like looking at dog crap for an hour and a half.... I would rather spend a day watching Pokémon the movie than watch Freddy got fingered again.....
Well, as you can guess from this post. I HATED the movie

    Rabies

    Sir Arthur of Camelot

    What is your purpose?
    To seek the Holy Grail

What is the average velocity of a swallow?
    What, African or European?

    Ahhhhhhhhh

    The Life Of brian.

"It is time to crush the romans!
What have they done for us lately, Hmmmm?"

"The Aquaducts. Theyve given us the Aquaducts.

"Apart from the Aquaducts what have they done for us lately?"

"A system of law and order" ect. ect.

The monty python team are the masters at comedy IMO.

The meaning of life wasnt that good if you ask me.
