Definatly John Bonham. He'd laugh at todays double bass pedal shenanigans.
Honorable mention to Reni and Ian Paice!

Yeah, Bonham get's the vote. Achille's Last Stand is the only proof you need. Alot of Keith Moon's drumming was pretty great (most of Quadrophenia comes to mind).

This has been posted before, but sure fúck it.
Ex Pearl Jam drummer, Dave Abruzzesse, he had some skill, and soul. He'd be my favourite. Try get their unplugged stuff and you'll see what I mean
    John Bonham - fantastic.
Jimi Hendrix's drummer - Mitch Mitchell? That was it wasn't it, he's brilliant.

Moon and Bonham are class. As is Ginger Baker from the Cream.

Awaiting the obligatory "Satan McHellpants from the Evil Norsemen can play hit the snare 3e14 times per second, ergo he's the best drummer" post. Anyone?

    Buddy Rich is indeed cool.

And don't complain, it's always fun to have a topic like this come up once in a while.

    As for my vote...

Jan Axl Von Blomberg, aka Hellhammer.
The man cannot be bettered on any field, he's a master of every style of drumming, and plays with about 50 different bands. He also plays with a load of jazz bands, and such-like. Was also in the guinness book of world records.
Watching the Mayhem video, and just seeing the stuff he does, it's unreal. The man is completely inhuman.

    Also:
Nick Barker - Cradle Of Filth/Dimmu Borgir/Lock-Up - He's one of the fastest drummers out there, extremely impressive.

Horgh - Immortal - He has some of the best beats out there, and he knows when to slow down, and take it easy too.

    http://www.immortal.nu/sounds/immortal_horghdrumsolo.mp3
Here's a drum solo he did. Extremely astonishing stuff.
Far better, in my opinion, than the Buddy Rich drum solo I heard.
Although, no offense to the man though.

I just have to say, sorry if this offends you AngelWhore,
that The Cradle of filth drummer is so bad sounding. Everything sounds the same, and that double bass stuff he does sounds rubbish, he overdoes it.
Bonham used to do that stuff with one pedal for a laugh, and he had a fúcking huge 26" bass drum to make him extra loud.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,218 ✭✭✭Tazz T

    Lombardo - untouchable.

Listen to him on the Grip Inc stuff. 4 double bass at once - unbelievable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,998 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

John Bonham could keep up with most double bass drum players with one foot.
Reni could too, but he also had his floor tom tuned down.
    Ian paice is just mad.
Just remember though. Bonzo was doing fast bass before anyone else (well nearly)
Jazz drummers are are mostly excellent, but seems as no-one really knows them it' best to leave them out as it'd be hard to do a comparison.

    No offense taken... Just yet...

Just have to ask this though.

Are you talking about Cradle's Current drummer, or their old drummer?
    Because there's a huge difference.

Although, I shall probably have to challenge you to a one-on-one, un-armoured SPORK fight.

The guy who plays on "Her ghost in the fog" is annoying,
But I dont know if he is new or old.
And I dont know the name of the albums, so i can't tell which one he's from.
But I had to listen to them CONSTANTLY over the summer, due to friends liking them and the drumming went through my head.
So it could be a mixture of the old guy and the new guy.

Also isn't a spork a spoon-fork. They should make one, but they would have to overcome one big bug in it's construction.
The fact that using the sppon section would involve stabbing your self in the back of the throat.

Her Ghost In The Fog, 'eh?
In which case you're completely forgiven.
As we'd be pretty much talking about two completely different bands at that stage.

Listen to the albums "Dusk... And Her Embrace" & "V Empire" to hear some PROPER drumming.

The drumming on Dusk is nothing short of astounding. It's all just so emotional and atmospheric.
There's a part on one song where it's nothing but the bass player and Nick doing this breath-taking cymbal work, and it's just one of the most fantastic sounding peices I've ever heard. So atmospheric.

Of course, that's back where they were a band worth listening to. Not now when they're just a crap band.

Im surprised nobody has mentioned Neil Peart [Rush] yet. IMHO he is the greatest drummer that rock/metal music has ever produced, certainly far better than Bonham (and I am a huge zep fan!!!). He makes the drum seem like an independent instrument, as opposed to merely providing tempo, which other less talented drummers do. Even my uncle, who is a classical pianist!! remarked on it one day while he was in the house!!!!

For thrash/death/black I think Lombardo - others are faster but I think the quality of his fills are outstanding. Gen Hoglan would get an honourable mention.

    Tjodalv - Dimmu Borgir/Old Man's Child/Susperia

    Martin Lopez - Opeth

Shaun - My Dying Bride (He's nothing fast at all, but he's one of the most interesting, emotional and atmospheric drummers alive. Just listen to the stuff he does on The Cry Of Mankind, just beautiful.)

Hello all you so called music fans. You have all over looking the true drumming genius that is ANIMAL from the muppets. No one comes close. Keith moon does. Nicko MacBrain is good. Bill Ward is better. Aynsley Dunbar is also a great. Ginger Baker is great. But Buddy Rich is in a differnet league. For me Buddy Rich is the greatest. But ANIMAL is a genius, try playing the drums with a hand stuck up your arse.

I agree with angel whore ,Nick barker is incredible.

Also, whoever said all his stuff sounds the same then stated that he had only heard 'her ghost in the fog'.Bit confused?

    Also:
    Hellhammer(Mayhem),
    Pete sandovel(Morbid angel),
    Dave lombardo(Slayer),

Jazz drummers are faster but they use a technique whereby their twitch their hand and hit the snare about 15 times a second :)
They may be faster, but neither are better.

A jazz drummer couldn't do Extreme technical death metal drumming and likewise a metal drummer couldn't pull off the jazz **** as well.I know drummers play all styles, but usually they specialise.

This is an incredibly uninformed opinion. A jazz drummer can play any style usually. The very root of all drummin could be considered marching band music, and these are the same rudiments you'll be taught no matter who you go to for lessons. The rudiments are all exactly the same, so most drummers do specialise, but most can play pretty much all styles, especially jazz drummers. I reckon they have the best timing, best precision and best grasp of drum rudiments than any other style player

If a metal drummer was taught traditionally than he/she will be able to play some jazz, but obviously not as skillfully as a jazz player. All drummers would usually be taught the exact same, unless they taught themselves....

The technique you're referring to is just strokes, it's not 'twitching'! That's insulting as pulling of these strokes is quite difficult and very skillful, 2 strokes, 5, 7.... basically rolling with one hand! Sorry, if I sound all pedantic, I don't mean to, but I often find people think drummin is good because it's fast... and that's fine, but that's because most people don't understand the idea of strange time patterns and good technique. I always find young drummers, or people just learning can play hard and fast, but there's no skill there.

Listen to the tune and justice for by Metallica, the drumming is very simple, yet very skillful, and the double bass drum work is precise, not rediculously fast all the time, it's skill... that's why i appreciate Lars Ulrich as a great speed metal drummer. Igor Cavalera is great as well. I suppose favourite drummer is mostly influenced by favourite bands, but when someone says Dave Grohl.... I laugh heartily as hes shíte! :)

I think I was misinterpreted.I didn't mean there was anything wrong with jazz drumming :)

I concur that it is incredibly technical and the timing is erratic at the best of times.

What I meant to say was that metal drummers are talented.A lot of posts here have been saying that they just hammer the **** of their kit and it all sounds the same.I'm a guitarist so you know better than I do,but any of the metal drummers I know(well experienced) would beg to differ. They are two very different styles, jazz is more technical.

Is this thread on best drummer(technical) or best drummer(sounding). For guitar, the best technical guitarists are far from in my opinion the best. One's ability to write good music is equally,if not more, important in my humble opinion.

    ps:After reading over this I realised I went on a bit of a tangent.Sorry :)

I agree... that's why I myself would say most metal drummers are soulless. They don't play music with the drums only a beat if ou get my meaning.... now someone like Dave Abruzzesse has alot of soul in his playing.... but he's also technically proficient. While I find most metal drummers are technically sound. Musically they're not.

I know this to be ****!

    Look at Hellhammer!
He's easily the fastest drummer alive, and he plays with loads of metal bands.
Yet he's a pure jazz drummer, he plays with a lot of Jazz bands also.

    Dr. Loon[/i]. ;)

I wholeheartedly disagree about Metal Drummers being soul-less.

Listen to the stuff Shaun from My Dying Bride or Martin Lopez from Opeth does.
They're two of the most emotional, soulfull drummers alive.

Most metal drummers I think, are soulless. The reason I say this is because often times, metal drummers use a combination of speed and technical drumming to back up the band, and the reason being is that often the music doesn't allow them much more. That's about style though.
Let's say the drummer from Jamiroquai (I know it's not metal, but it's another example, and I'm not just digging at metal but all drummers) who's a technically brilliant drummer, his beats are cool and often complex, but he's got no soul in his drumming.

Pearl Jam's new drummer has no soul either, and by soul I just mean someone who's innovative with their beats, and considers the drums to be more than just something you bang on which produces different pitches/tones. Mike Bordin from Faith no more was a great drummer as well. Lars Ulrich lost the soul in his drumming after ...and justice for all I reckon. Listen to that album, then listen to the latest stuff, concentrating on the drumming, and you'll see what I mean.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I know what you mean about Lars Ulrich.

But have a listen to some of the stuff I'm talking about.
    You might be pleasantly suprised.

There's a link I posted on the first page.
Give it a listen to, only a small file.

    Also check out some Darkthrone.
Fenriz is a strange drummer, he really throws out some downright odd beats.

    And David Gray from Akercocke.
    Completely self-taught.
    He's quite original.

Did anyone see Millionaire... on ITV tonight, two brothers (it was a twins special), collage age going for the 32,000 question (I think)-

Question- John Bonham was the drummer of which rock group?

A: Pink Floyd B: Led Zeppelin
    C: Cream D: The Who

They had'nt a clue, did'nt even hazzard a guess, it was embarassing. :D I was ashamed of my sex.

Didn't think anything special of that dude Horgh's drum solo... typical double bass drum work, in fact if you take a look at Lars drum solo on one of the "Binge and purge" tapes, he's alot better - more precise, then again the sound wasn't great on that file you posted.

Anyway, I'll check out some of the other dudes you suggest as well.
