    Liverpool 0-0 Galatasary
    That the Pool out then?

If so, is it worth being in the UEFA cup if it was to take from their Premiership challenge?

UEFA Cup ???!!! I thought they were playing in the Champions League :)

No I think playing at that level against quality teams actually helps develop teams skill levels etc.

    Gandalf.

Meh, still a possibility of qualifying what with Barca & Roma drawing. We have to win now so the away games should be fairly open & attacking if nothing else.

    And BAH Heskey.

    Bah Owen, he was ****e

Bah Gerrard getting injured. Didn't even need to stretch for that ball!

On a technical note, UEFA are ending the third place to UEFA Cup
    policy, rightly in my view.

As for the Pool, well they huffed and puffed, only Gallas' goalie
kept them in it really. They can still do it but if they do they'll surly have conceeded and scored fewer goals than any other side in the knockout stages.

I'd have played Littmanan before Gary MaC.

    Mike.

I'd have told Smicer to go home and stay there, then thrown Barros on. What better place/time for him to prove himself :]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,148 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

It weas unfortunate that They didnt win, especially with the others drawing, but hell its open if they win next week and hope the others draw then its all to play for.Even if we were to go out in this round I wouldnt be to Gloom and Doom about it, its our first outing in the champions league, and have been drawn in argubly the toughest group in it atm.And as Gandalf said playing against teams of a high calibre is vital to improve, learn from mistakes etc.

That keeper they had was good as well unfortunatly, he made some tremendous saves in the game.

Oh and yes if I could make one complaint against Phil Thompson itd be... Litmanen! look there he is on the bench! put him on the damn pitch!

Without a doubt! What more does the man have to do to prove himself? He is a class act who has turned numerous games in our favour when he has come on as a substitute, I mean his vision and creativity are world renowned and that is exactly what we were missing during that dodgy patch a few weeks back.

Now that it looks like Gerrard could be out for the derby game against Everton and the next Gala' match surely he'll be given a run. I reckon he's more comfortable in midfield anyway, when he's put on up front he just drifts back there anyway.
I realise that we might lose some of the steel in midfield but imagine the damage that Owen and an in-form Heskey or even Anelka could do with that kind of service... frightening! but in a good way of course :)

Litmanen is world class, without a doubt. I thought he and Anelka were ineligible for the Champions League though...

When is Baros going to get his chance????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭ramius

Gerrard's injury instnt to bad he will only miss the nect two games, liverpool's problem are that, they are negative, if gerrard and owen get the team is crap and they dont play the right players i.e. LITMANEN and baros.

Yes Anelka is ineligible because he played for PSG in the UEFA Cup but Litmanen is very much eligible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,770 ✭✭✭Bottle_of_Smoke

The only player i think Anelka should be paired with is Litmanen, Anelka's an out and out finisher, Owen isn't a supplier and Heskey is incompetant.

That of course isn't to say Litmanen cant be paired with someone else

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Steven Garrard is out for 3 weeks so thats plenty of time for Litmanan to stake a claim. I just hope he does, as I'd hate to e him go in frustration when he's the hier apparant to Jan Mobly and John Barnes in many ways.

    Mike.

Who cares bout the Scouse ****s? Man United is going to win both the Premiership and The Champions League.

    You are a Scouser,
    An ugly Scouser,
    You're only happy,
    On Giro day.
    Your mum's out thieving,

Not to mention there's probably about 5 real scousers in the whole Liverpool squad.

Oh and it was 5 cups last season.

Go on list them out for me so I can have a good laugh.

Well the 3 you already know.

And then theres the time we beat Bayern in the Super Cup final and oh yea the time we whored Man Utd in the Charity Shield.

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

Those two don't count ya gob****e! They're friendly trophies!

Man United won the Intercontinental Cup but they did not count it as a TROPHY!

Those other three you won were hardly even what you would call competitive other than the FA Cup.

Actually they're not. This only happens if you come 3rd in the first group stage. If you dont come in the top 2 in the second group stage you are out of Europe.

As for Man Utd. they dont have a chance in hell of winning the Champions League, I really cant see anybody stopping Real Madrid.

Ha! We shall see about that now. I personally think youre a fool for making such a stupid comment. You really are putting yourself down with comments like that you know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

Yeah we will see. Utd are yet to come up against any real competition in the champions league this season. The one team that was good was Deportivo and I belive utd lost twice to them? (once anyway). Bayern Munich arent very good at all this season so beating them is nothing to celebrate about. Real, Roma, Deportivo, Juve they are all better than Utd sorry. Barcelona too, they've gotten their season together now it would seem, they'll be challengers. Strongest english team are Arsenal. There is too much quality in there for Utd to win. So I think this may just justify my comments and make me less of a fool. As for stupid comments you're the one singing stupid anti-liverpool songs. Just coz we beat you 5 times in a row, count em 1 2 3 4 5 doesnt mean you have to get offended.
I still reckon Real Madrid will win the champions league, not that I want them to. They have a complete team, Utd need a better defense and goalie, when they get those problems sorted then maybe I'll consider them as title prospects.
The premiership is not so great so I wouldnt get too excited about Utd winning it all the time.

No disrespect to you Makaveli, but if Liverpool go on to win the Premiership, which they have every chance of doing,I think a lot of pool supporters will get very excited about it.Winning the league is what most fans live for.

As for United winning the Champions league? I have to agree with you,if the defence was more solid then maybe i could see them winning it but I can't see them doing it this year.......but you never know with football :)

why dont you tell that to the other 91 teams in the league....
that has to be possibly the most stupid and ridiculous statement i have ever seen in any topic anywhere at all in the whole of my life.
in fact possibly in the entire history of football.
    you twat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

That's quite funny. You know when people can get so pissed off by one little comment from somebody they dont even know and not even directed at them. Maybe I should have phrased it better.
The premiership is not so great in comparison to serie A or la liga. All have their fair share of crap teams but the top teams in la liga and serie a are probably better teams than the top ones in the premiership.
My point is, that all because utd have dominated in england over the past decade it doesnt mean that they are automatically #1 contenders for the champions league as so many utd supporters would lead you to believe. Remember they may have pissed all over the league but in that time have only won the champions league once.
WWM dont have a panic attack, just sit back and relax a little.
btw I'd get really excited if Liverpool won the league, I'd love it to happen. It doesnt mean that if they win the league though that they are guaranted champ league glory too. That's my point

im not having a panic attack.
and no matter what way i look at it, its still the most rediculous thing ive ever seen written.

nor, by the way, am i písseds of at it. im not a utd fan so i dont care what you say about them.

as fo rthe premier not being as good as spanish or italian leagues. what is this based on? what advanced technics have you used to get some tangible answers and result from?

personally i think the premier has more passion in it and thats why i prefer it. i also think italian football is boring.

spanish football is entertaining as it is attack oriented, but its still lacks edge.

but the fact of the matter is that you said

why would any team bother playing anymore.
what an absolute bullshít statement to make that the premier title means nothing. im not talking about whether they go onto to do anything europe or not, im just talking about winning the premiership.
as a liverpool supporter, im completely surprised.
sounds like the sort of shíte a man utd fan would come out with....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

where did I say in that statement that it means nothing?
Better as in the teams themselves not as in terms of passion and entertainment, if it was down to that then the Premiership wins. I agree with you about both serie a and la liga. I'm talking about the qulaity of the top six or so sides. I would put them ahead of the premiership teams on their results in Europe.
    Last season for example
Champions League semi final: Real Madrid v Bayern , Leeds v Valencia
Uefa Cup: Semi Final: Barce v Liverpool. Alaves v Leverkusen(? cant remember)
Season before: Champions league semi final: Real v ?
    Barce v Valencia

Ok I wont go any further and I will retract my statement about serie a being better.
It is clear from the above how much spain has dominated lately, I think that justifies my point.
    who did real beat?

I made the statement in retaliation to a comment by a utd supporter. It was only meant to be applied to outcome in european competition. I already said I'd love to see Liverpool win it.
Ah screw this from now on I think I'll just stay quiet on topics like this to avoid all this grief

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

i wouldnt agree with you about the top 6 teams either
leeds were fantastic in th champions league last year.
utd are always feared by any team.
arsenal have had poor results away from home, not indicative of their true potential.

english teams are more noted for thier inconistancy rather than their play i feel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

Yes I agree, however Leeds were ran very close by Deportivo last year. Utd are a threat but I still think they will have to face Real along the way to win it and when they do, they wont have the defence to cope with zidane, figo, raul and the like. Considering they are all playing.
Arsenal I think are the team with the best chance this season, IMO they have a complete team and for this reason should go quite far. They also have great players like Henry, Viera, Pires and Ljunberg(sp).
In fairness I'm not english. So any english team winning the champions league other than liverpool I couldnt give a toss about. I would like to see Arsenal do it though.
I hate Real Madrid too though. I love Barce almost as much as I do Liverpool. They are the only 2 teams I actually care about in the competition. But I have to acknowledge the quality in other teams and IMO Real have the strongest team in the competiton. This is football however and anything can happen. I'm just sick of utd fans thinking that man utd are the best team in Europe when they aren't, I say they aren't coz Bayern won last season and Real Madrid the season before.

Makaveli I am a United fan but I agree with alot of what you say. I do think that the quality of team in La Liga is currently slightly better than that of the premiership. But I also have to point out that people have been saying the same thing about Real Madrid every season for about six seasons now, and although they have won it twice it shows that they are not invincible. As regards Serie A I think that the Premiership has surpassed it as a league and for backup of that statement just look at Premiership v Serie A results over the last four seasons or so. Also you stated earlier that Bayern Munich are poor this season, may I remind you that they are European Champions and 2nd ( I think ) in the Bundesleige. Not too shabby for a poor season. Having said all that I do agree that United need to tighten up their defence, although they seem to be working on that. IMO Silvestre has come on alot this season, Ronny johnsen came back at the weekend, I think Blanc is class, although he is slow his positional sense is good and his composure excellent. That just leaves the Neville Sisters whom I cannot defend. I do not say United will win the European Cup but I do think they are contenders. By the way WWM commiserations on Sundays result.

    So whats you're point?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

Waylander I retracted my comment about serie a in one of those other posts.
    Eh what's your point Keeks?
My whole point was that the man utd supporters claim they are the best when they are not.
Is that what you're implying about liverpool fans. I'm not being smart here I'm just not exactly seeing what you're trying to put across.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,199 ✭✭✭Keeks

That is exactally my point. Its like the pot calling the kettle black. Every LPFC supporter is going around claiming to be the best, just like a lot of the "false' UTD supporters. It feels like the eighties again. At the moment it is 'really' painfull being a suppoter of any other team bar liverpool. Head wreacking!
