What's your favorite phantom-type love song?
Top of my list would have to be, "Lover Come Over" - Jeff Buckley, "Both Hands" by Ani DiFranco, "This one goes out to the one I Love" REM.......

    anyone else?

Well anything by the late great Jeff Buckley gets my vote. "Lover, You Should've Come Over" is definitely my favourite Jeff song. I reckon he doesn't get enough airplay.

neil young - such a woman
if its hip enough to be played on phantom that is.

    Oh oh!!!

D'you know what's a really good song: "Woman In Chains" by Tears for Fears. Not a fan, but heard the song and thought it was great.
I suppose "Unintended" by Muse should get a mention, even though it's not their usual form.

Oh yeah!! And another one is "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode. Anyone else like that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 102 ✭✭indie_chick

Emmet tinley...dunno the name of the song but it goes

"i heard the music your soul was making. And it hurts to lose you. Just before we made it"

Such an amazing song. I'll always associate with with 2 people. My first love and Uaneen Fitsimmons.

Your Song by Elton John, its very sweet indeed (not sure if i've ever heard it on Phantom tho)... That REM song is really nice too, Wilt did a mean version of it once... but my personal favourite 3 are....

The Moldy Peaches - Anyone else but you.

    Pearl Jam - Black.

    The Frames - Your Face.

    Seán.

aggh! it's the prayerboat, i think, and as far as i know it's called 'hurts to lose you'. i love that song too, and it will always remind me of a certain someone too. unrequited love and all that. sniff.

for my vote, though, it would have to be cat power's cover of sea of love ... so so beautiful. not very phantomy, although i guess it depends on the dj (and most of the suggestions here are definately *not* phantomy)

    lyrically and musically beautiful:
    BOWIE - absolute beginners
PUMPKINS - stand inside your love

hmm, what else would i put in my "love hour"?
allow me to run thru my mp3's....
    yes, Enjoy The Silence
    CHRIS ISAAC - wicked game
    MBV-sometimes
    ECHOBELLY - dark therapy
MAZZY STAR - faded into you
    FIONA APPLE - sullen girl
3 COLOURS RED - beautiful day
    PEARL JAM - black
    BON JOVI - always

the 80's were great for the soppy stuff.....
BONNI TYLER - total eclipse of the heart
    CHEAP TRICK - the flame
FOREIGNER - i wanna know what love is
    JOHN WAITE - missing you
BRYAN FERRY - Lennon's "didn't mean to hurt you"
THOMPSON TWINS - hold me now
    HEART - alone
    DEF LEPPARD - hysteria

....some arguably dodgy songs there but there ain't
    no denying their heart

    2 questions for ya:

    1) Have you *ever* heard the Yo La Tengo version? Also very byootiful.

    2) Have you ever heard the Only Ones played on Phantom? (Except 'Another Girl..' which I'm sure they've played even though I've never heard it)

My fave Only Ones love song would be 'Out Their In The Night', written by Peter Perrett for his cat :)
Anotehr good love-song-for-a-cat is 'Wop-a-Din-Din' of the last Red House Painters album.

uh, meglome, 'disarm' is not about love, its about bad parenting as far as i can remember. well, i guess thats a kind of love.

    my personal favourites are:

    ava adore-pumpkins
    dependence theme-larocca
    the proffessor-damo rice

and the list would go on if i could be bothered to think.

Good thread this actually.....good choices. I wouldnt actually mind doing a show of these "love songs" and others at some stage...would be fun.

Lolo, I played "Its the Truth" from the Only ones about three weeks ago on Phantom. Great tune too :). Agreed though, must play some more. Ive only heard "The only ones - the album". Whats the other stuff like Even serpents shine etc like?

Personally, if I was to pick one I would probably go for Mr Cohens "Famous Blue Raincoat", or scarily enough the brilliant version that Jennifer Warnes did of it.

    Regards,

    Pete Reed

Okay, so I stand corrected! I had never heard anyone on Phantom play them. Even Serpents Shine is a kind of Best Of..., it's a good starting point, but the albums themselves are better. The Only Ones Live is great too - incidentally, a lot fo the recordings for it were supplied by Gary Hill who runs Smile Records on Georges St., but he's not credited on it (which was a wee bit unfair).

Extremely underrated band, so many people love Another Girl Another Planet but haven't bothered to check the rest of their stuff out.

Prince songs! Good call. Purple Rain!

Then for Irish acts - have to say I almost shed a tear to Brando's "Say You Love me".

Other's to be mentioned: Police - "Every Breath You Take". Yes, it is overplayed, but still a great tune. No one has even mentioned the mass selection of Beatles songs (the list is endless).

Random and obscure love song - "Solace of You" - Living Colour (NY in the house)

I quite like the Yo La Tengo version but I LOVE the Only Ones version. I reckon his delivery is spot on. I only have it on vinyl though and haven't heard it in ages. Its probably on of my favourite songs ever!

My favourite Yo La Tengo cover vesion is probably Daniel Johnstons "Speeding Motorcycle" or "What Can I Say" written by some band I don't know.

My Favourite Red House Painters song is possibly Down Colourful Hill. I wish he'd sing a bit more clearly though.

Goddammit yes! Even though I won't be in the country to hear it, I heartily endorse any playing of UVS over public airwaves.

While wandering through the design section Victoria & Albert Museum recently, I came across a display of the cover of Joy 1967-1990, complete with notes from Vaughn Oliver. It gave me a warm fuzzy feeling to see one of my favourite (and grossly overlooked by the world at large) albums on display. Sigh.

I have to stop myself form buying copies of UVS albums that I already have when I see them 2nd-hand - I feel sorry for them cause nobody wanted them. I

    More great UVS love songs:

    Thief's Love Song
    Beauty #2
A Dream Of Love (not quite a love song, but captures that feeling of exhileration when you've just met someone you fancy like mad)
