Reasons why I left Ireland

Here is a list of reasons why I left Ireland to go to Australia. All my points are discussable if anyone wants to partake. If anyone is offended due to patroicism shouldn't post a reply. This post is not designed to be provocative, it's the truth and sometimes the truth hurts. I understand living in ireland has some good points, so I'll be biased and only point out the bad ones.

    Thanks

Id have to agree on many of yer points there, and I have considered packing up and moving off myself a few times..
The only thing thats stopped me is the thought 'Hey, Its the same everywhere else'.. Correct me if im wrong.

Some good points there... a lot of which only hit you when you go to a nice city abroad.
On the other hand, you could write a list of things you hate about any place once you've lived there for long enough.
You have to keep in mind though... it's not that long ago since people were living in the disease-ridden slums in the city center, with virtually no sanitation.
You only have to look back about 60 years to be impressed by how far Dublin has come.
There's still a really long way to go though :(
    12. The begrudgery of the working-class toward middle-class and upper-class people
That goes both ways in fairness... how many times have you heard people moaing about "..my taxes going to pay for that wasters new tracksuit while all he does is sit on his arse..."
    I don't think the have's and have-nots will ever see eye-to-eye.
    10. The tracksuit uniform for scumbags - "tracker-nacker" is this sophiscitated fashion for teens? no.
    It's strange isn't it?
It's like that whole Gortex jacket thing they had going on... I don't get it, I really don't.
I heard some of those jackets cost ~£70, why for a mere £30 you could get a nice jacket from Pennies and actually look pretty respectable.

I can understand anyones wishes to jump ship and live abroad, (especially if you live in Dublin) I reckon family ties are what's keeping most of us here :)

Being a bit of a newbie to Ireland (6years) I could agree to many (okay nearly all) of these points, but having also spent 24 years in Sydney, I think you will a bit of the samer:
    21. Corrupt politicians - let's face it, the ones that are honest, haven't been caught yet.
    24. Street vandalism - smashing Bus Shelters, and graffiti
    30. Property prices
    46. Verbal abuse toward one another. "Slagging" sense of humour often goes too far
    48. The vulgarity and bad-language of most people

Though now I look at it, its only 5 out of 50.

    Hmmm.....what am I doing here?

I agree with most of your points, those I do agree with I've deleted and left the ones which are mainly bullshít generalisations and crap up above there.
Ignorenace of the people? Yes insome places, not all - generalisation. I found people in London about 5 times as ignorant... but not all of them? Same applies for number 9

Irish people dress like shíte? Some do, some don't. We're not the fashion capital of the world, but alot of Germans, French, English, Americans dress badly - invalid point there mate.
Point 12 - happens the world over - stupid point
Point 14 - That's our culture, we're a laid back people. I don't think it leads to poor standards, I suppose this could be debated.
Point 17 is bóllox. Generalisation again. Full stop.
Point 21 - this only happens in Ireland does it?
    Point 23 - What?
Point 31 - Not true, but we're not as advanced recycling wise as most other countries and possibly not as educated. I respect my environment.
Point 41 - Agreed. Still, London, New York and many others have their problems.
Point 42 - Don't know? Lack of demand?
Point 44 - Bullshít. We're all supposed to be chefs now? The food we eat is part of our culture.
Point 48 - This may be true, but it's a generalisation. I curse alot, so do my friends. It's the same in alot of places you go though... a very vague point here.

All in all looks like I half agree with you. I did get out myself once, but I came back, lived in London, and I missed friends and family and the way of life!! :)

I agree with the majority of your points, but at the end of the day, as the song/saying goes: "The grass is always greener on the other side".

Really, anywhere you go the problems are generally the same, the only difference is that you are in a different place.

I would agree with all the points above but as most of us have mentioned I would miss Ireland if I were to leave. Heck I would miss Dublin if I left even to go to some other county. I would also miss Fibbers. ;)

Aus_boy you are such a Mary Whitehouse - please don't ever come back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,752 ✭✭✭yankinlk

Why i came to ireland and stayed/never left...

    1. The pace of life
    2. The relaxed attitude of the people here
    3. bank holidays
    4. work ethic (do nothing monday or friday, before breakfast, or after tea, and take an hour lunch while you are at it)
    5. the mild weather (not joking)
    6. the twilight
    7. the beer (not overconsumption, just the best quality)
    8. mobile phone system (much better than the states)
    9. spirit of community (you might call it nosey neighbors, try living in a society without it and you will come back to it)
    10. hurling
    11. rugby
    12. scenery
    13. more active life compared to the workaholic states life
    14. social atmosphere, pubs tea or just conversation, lost in other places
    15. singsongs
    16. family
    17. christmas
    18. the first (rare) spring day to be enjoyed, not squandered
19 traditions here, many different kinds, but nice to see genrations passing them on, nothing like it in the states
    20. the patriotism
    21. world cup fever, this will be my forst year to experience it.
    22. the honesty, frankness, ability to spot bull****
    23. lack of fast-buck mentality
    24. easy to make strong, lasting friendships
    25. callers (in the states you HAVE to phone 3 weeks in advance)
    26. sincerity

That is all i could drum up this early morning, but i only been here 6 years, ask me again in 20 years...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,258 ✭✭✭Walls

Almost all of these are true. Best of luck abroad and ignore the begrudery you'll get here. Let us know if it better anywhere else and sooner or later I'll drop in for a visit!

    13. Racist attitude toward refugees

haha, you ARE living in aus now?.

    Norweigan ship?...Afghan refugess?.....ring any bells?

    26. Road deaths - Highest in Europe

I believe Portugal have higher road deaths.
    37. The police force (Gardai) do not have a central Database - still pen pushing then, lads?

They do, it's called "Pulse", but they don't use it :D
    8. The ignorance of the people

emm your post sounds pretty ignorant to me to be honest.

    23. The dishonesty of most people

    don't go generalising there....
    44. People lack culinary skills

you've never tasted my mothers roast beef of a sunday have ya bai?
    33. Dublin Airport is the only Airport in Europe without a connecting train line

Dublin != Ireland, Cork Airport or Waterford Airport don't have connecting trainlines either.

to be honest it sounds to me, like you should have named your post "reasons why i left dublin ." I could go on and on, but NAH!

If Ireland/Irish people are that bad, why bother interacting with us here then? I'm sure aus have message boards. ?

I have to agree with Viking here

"The grass is always greener .... "

And no matter where you live for any length of time you will start to spot things you don't like. Most of what was listed by Aus_boy can be found abroad quite easily. You just have to know where to look (which we don't since we don't live in these places). It would be naive to think that NY or London would be a nicer place to live. You might get a better public transport system and more alternative pubs/clubs, but that's about it.

So I would have to say stop being a prima-donna.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didnt even read his post because it was a load of nonsense, but upon reading doctor loons response, i happened accross point 17, now that is absolute bollox, of all the countries ive been in for a prolonged period, I have to say ireland has the best looking women on a per head capita basis. As for the snobby point, ever think you might have something to do with that.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 42,362 Mod ✭✭✭✭Beruthiel

ever think you might have something to do with that

I would reckon it has everything to do with it! an attitude like that is off putting straight away, I will most likely talk to anyone in a pub (being of the friendly type) but I think you aus_boy would last about 1.5 seconds (and it's not 'cos I'm cocky, I just tend to recognize an assh*le fairly quickly, perhaps most women do in your case!) - being a women meself, I take offence to number 17!!! chance your attitude and see what happens.

btw - my bloke is french and loves it here for all the reasons that yankinlk has stated above.
sure, there are a lot of things that can be improved here, but NO country is different in this regard.

Most of your other points are utter rubbish and/or generalisations.

So you only lived in dublin and assumed the whole country is like that  sorry but ur an idiot.

If you ever bothered to get off ur hole n move around you'd see not all people are like dub's. Us people "down country" are friendly for the most part, littre isn't such a major issue, Ireland has one of the cleanest air supplyes in the World not to mention one of the most unpolluted water supplies and unspoilt landscapes.

So u move to australia, hole in ozone layer - higher rate of skin cancer, most of it is covered in desert. Go you! :p

aus_boy there is a serious case of SPANNERism here! Im only replying to this one as the rest are true in a lot of places (maybe not car insurance).

I dont think i even need to make a point on this one.. just mention Asutralia and Refugee in one line and thats nuff said!

Does not rain all year round just rains a lot!

Aus_boy Ireland has its own problems like any other country in the world. But reading your list it looks like to me that you are actually trying to convince yourself that you have made the right choice in moving to Austrailia.

I do take offense at the ignorance of the people and closemindedness of the people comments. Irish people at least the ones I have known for years and hang around with are not ignorant and are very open minded.

Anyway good luck with your new life in Austrialia, just hope your not classified as a refugee over there eh.

Aus Boy, you mention plenty of reasons why you left and are entitled to that, but one thing above Everything else which you will miss is the CRAIC. I've lived in many countries including Australia and the one thing I always missed was the craic in the pub, ..oh and milk, Irish Milk you can't beat it :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,443 ✭✭✭✭bonkey

This post is quite possibly the reasons that our "friend" left Ireland, but if so , I think his reasoning is as much at fault as Ireland. Some valid points, some bigoted, some just plain untrue.

But, just to take two points....

    33. Dublin Airport is the only Airport in Europe without a connecting train line
    a) The train line is being built. There was a small case of insufficient money for a while there, followed by a case of "designing it correctly" once the money was there.

    b) None of : Basel in Switzerland, Bern in Switzerland, Alicante in Spain, Torremolinos in Spain have rail links, nor do any Irish airports, not just Dublin. So - that would be about 40% of the European mainland international airports to which I have flown that dont have rail links. Maybe you meant "international airport serving a capital city" or something more specific? Could that have been another innacurate sweeping generalisation like so much of the rest of your points?

You will also notice that Dublin *has* a dedicated bus line to bring you from the airport to *either* of the two non-connecting rail stations which the city has. Whats the problem - you allergic to buses?

    51. Same ticket cannot be used on buses and trains, why? it's the same company? idiocy, as usual.

Because its three seperate operating companies owned by one parent "shell" company. More simply - they are not the same company in terms of the operation.

    jc

As far as I know you can get tickets which you can use on both if you are commuting from a town to a city which has both a bus and train service.
    e.g. Mallow to Cork

I'd have to defend Australia on this point also.

Just because one boatload of Afgani refugees gets refused entry, doesn't make Australians racist towards refugees.

(100% of Australia -including the Coori people [Aboriginals to you] are immigrants) Since WWI Australia has been a constant flow of immigrants to help raise the Population and to develop the country. Mediterraneans, Africans, Arabs, Asians and Europeans.
Its only since the early 80s that Australia has had to curb the amount of immigration so as not to push the population beyond its economy's constraints.

I'd have to agree with almost all of those points.
I went to Philadelphia in October of last year and almost lapsed into depression when I came home. It's hard to describe it but it's just different, in a good, healthy way.

    Well said Boston.

Also Aus Boy - I'm living with some Australians and they have no complaints about the place.

Granted Oz cities are cleaner and the weather is warmer but that's about it. Everything else, rents, traffic, jobs, etc, is pretty much the same.

No doubt you'll soon find a whole slate of things to moan and bitch about - have fun.

No way, if anything - we need more moany whinging bastards... IMO we put up with too much crap from people and organizations in this country (excuse me, but IR£4,000+ for car insurance? .... eircoms telco monopoly?).
I shudder to think where this country would be if nobody moaned, we'd all be happy little paddies, eating our spuds and tending to Lord Wellingtons vast acres while we sleep starving in our own shít.
There's nothing wrong with moaning, and instead of píssing on this poor fellow from a height and dismissing his points as total crap (although many are)- why not just take them with a pinch of salt and accept them as feelings instead of fact.
The fact is, he's not the only one who's utterly píssed off with the state of things here, there are thousands like him... and although many other places around the world are just as bad (and even more that are far worse)... I say fair play to him for at least trying to find somewhere he'll be happy.

Or maybe I'm just talking a load of old shíte, in which case - flame on you crazy fire-engine!
    WOOOHOOOOO!!!!

If Ireland is such a crap place, and all the people in it, are rascist, homophobic, unhygenic, closeminded and petty, then why are you posting on an Irish discussion board, full of predominetly Irish people ? If its to show how much of an enlightened and clever person you are, much more so than us spud munching rednecks who sleep in their own filth, i don't think its worked.

well, i couold agree with about 99% of the things hes complained about. but its not the reason i left ireland.
i left coz i was bored of dublin.
some of those things you cant change, some of them you can ignore, and some o fthe m are the same as any city.
i wouldnt agree with you on the irish women are ugky and ythe good looking ones are cocky.
you will get that sort of thing wherever you go. ie, whoever you know just doesnt look like a supermodel.
try dressing up and going where the babes are and youll be surprised how many will talk to you. thats not to say that people who dont got to certain places arent attractive.
anyway, you shouldnt judge someone on how outwardly attractive they are. so i wouldnt say that irish women are ugly.
they are a lot of things, but not ugly.

It isn't moany whinging bastards you need to deal with that, it's people who are prepared to take a proactive stance, go out there and do something. Sitting around bellyaching about the weather and how everyone else is a cúnt isn't going to solve anything, and frankly people like that get on my títs.

Pity you did not say how long you have been in Australia. Have you got over your honneymoon yet. I have been in France for 24 years and went through the honeymoon stage, then the hate stage and then acceptance. As the others said there are good and bad things about every city. Although I am from Dublin - Dublin is not Ireland.
