Under-rated actors?

Follow a great irc conversation between me and belisarius, I though it would make a fantastic topic in here...

So, who do you lot think are the most under-rated actors?

Here's a few of my favorites:

    Brad Dourif.
    Andrew Robinson.
    Steve Buscemi.
    John Malkovich.

Now, I'm sure you've all heard of Steve and Jonny there, but top points to those who can place Brad Dourif and Andrew Robinson!

And I must also mention Bel's nomination:

    Muigel Ferrer.

    Any of your own?
And please, don't give away who the person is, by telling their roles and films.
And try not to google, or imdb either!

I would be inclined to disagree with you about John Malkovich being under-rated.
Malkovich is an excellent actor and is rightfully lauded as such.

He is not really a high profile movie star through choice, as he does a lot of theatre work.

im not sure, but I think steve buscemi would be of a similar type to john malkovic in that he is "lauded as such" as samson said.

I think steve buscemi is under-rated. He's hardly a household name, even though i think he should be. Sure, people who are into movies know him, but your average joe soap off the street probably doesn't, despite knowing people like nicholas cage or brad pitt. Perhaps he needs the leading role in a major film, instead of all these bit parts and cameos

    Andrew Robinson

Robinson was in The Step Father ,played a real evil Bast@rd,
    also garak in DS9.

Brad Dourif I think was in One flew over the cuckoos nest, and various other films,he also makes an apperence in the game Exile,
    the follow up to Riven.

    Me!

    ... no seriously... me...

    --

as for "big names" that should be even bigger...

well... I happen to think that Liam Neeson is, in fact, under-used and under rated.

Will Smith is also under-rated, - all that may start to change when "ALI" comes out.

    He is truly fantastic.

And so you know, Andrew Robinson was also in Hellraiser. A kinda double role in a certian sense, as he played Larry, and leter played Frank after taking Larry's skin. Extremely fantastic and creepy preformance.

    Sean Bean.

Malcolm McDowell - seriously under rated, think he's cool :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

    Lance Henrikkson
    Richard Dreyfuss
    Gary Oldman
    John Cusack

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭Da Bounca

    Gary Oldman
    John Cusack

Class actors, I wouldn't consider them under-rated though. They are both very succesful and popular.

Also was in Alien Resurrection I think and was the voice of Chucky in the Child's Play movies....

My own choice...... Joan Cusack (sister of John).

    William H Macey definitly!

Steve Buscemi is getting out there and people are starting to take notice - and not before time!

Avery Brooks (Star Trek DS 9's Captain Sisko) is gifted.

Also Jack Black. I'm glad to see him in big roles with "Shallow Hal" and "Orange County" cause he's a funny guy.

    here is one.
Scott Cohen, drawing a blank? I have only seen him in 1 thing, that was 10th Kingdom.. he played a wolfman (no makeup just acted a bit wolfish)
anyway forget about that he is in both looks and the way he speaks like a young Al Pacino.. especially the way he talks!!

I'll have to say, Mr. Oldman is definetly on my top 3 list of greatest actors ever.

And yes, Avery Brooks was quite brilliant in American History X.

    what about Lawrence Fishburne?

    reckon he's under-rated?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

Lawrence Fishburne.. yeah i would agree with that actually.. would anyone say Denzel Washington is also?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,912 ✭✭✭Washout

Andy Garcia is soooo under rated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

    and...ehhhh.... Bill Murray?
    Chris Barrie?
    Alice Krige?

Heh, I'd actually say Denzel Washington is over-rated. Every time I see him in any film he just happens to be playing the exact same character (or just turns them that way).

I'd agree on Steve Buscemi, though I think people recognise he's good now. William H. Macy, another good choice.

    Mick Lally.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,912 ✭✭✭Washout

Heh, I'd actually say Denzel Washington is over-rated.

I agree totally...he is such a boring actor

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,660 ✭✭✭Baz_

Mick Lally... rofl (but seriously kids, he is underrated)

denzel washington is not over rated at all, hes a superb actor, and brings a touch of the sublime to all his characters.

    Baz_

P.S. sorry about the pretentious use of sublime there, but its my word of the day.

My word of the day is Fadge!

But Denzel is a little over rated.
But I must say, he was good in Fallen.

Anyone else think Johnny Depp is under-rated?
He'd have to be among my favorite actors.

He was truly fantastic in The Ninth Gate.

    Patrick Stewart.
Until last year I would of said benicio del toro but thankfully he is getting the credit he deserves.
    George Cloony
Cant wait for Johnny depp in the jack the ripper film.
    Andy garcia was mentioned aswell
Cheech Marin (the guy in dusk till dawn who played 3 or 4 characters :))
    Sam Neill
    Sean Bean

    Steven Seagal

    ohhh please!!!

    underated:
    Richard E Grant
Jeff Bridges (after seeing him in the Big Labowski I was converted)

Pfff, can 'Richard E Grant' break bones with as much conviction as Seagal? I think not.
I think Britney is a good actor too though, she does a good job of being such a holy and loveable fake ass type person.

Walt. Stop spamming. This was an interesting thread.

Although I don't understand why, have to agree on the Johnny Depp thing, Angelho (hehee). He can be absolutely brilliant. He plays the weirdest parts to, you gotta admit he's got a strange taste in scripts. Benicio Del Toro is fab. I remember interviews with the cast from The Usual Suspects, when they joked about him ("I thought he was joking, but he actually talks like that!").

Tarantino. Amazing director. Awful actor. Would ya believe that's what he planned as a career before becoming a director? Sheesh.

I'm just after seeing Armageddon for the first time yesterday. Whats the name of the guy with the Blonde hair? he was in Shanghai Noon also... I thought he was really rather good in the 2 or 3 movies I've seen him in.

Also.. that ugly guy in Armageddon, he was the pedaphile in Con Air. I think he's very good too.

Yeah... But he has quite a good range...

    I mean, Edward Scissorhands!?
Then he does something like Donnie Brasco!
    And then Sleepy Hollow...

Oh, and he played such a dispicable bastard in The Ninth Gate! He was just like the kind of bad-guy you loved to chear on!
