Just out of interest, how many have you got ?

After encoding some more cds tonight (Roots Manuva ) I have just over 10,000. Its all on one hd too which a stack of cds. I'll be getting another hd soon to back it up as I'd be distraught if anything happened.

Oh and for the sake of Boards.ie getting sued or something by the RIAA I mean legal mp3s. ;)

About 500 but that includes 6 albums to be burned so that'll mean about 100 or so less, I used to have about 1500 but I lost them all thanks to kernell32 dying on me

    3,817 files, 15.6GB.

(Had more until I went on an rm -rf rampage clearing out things like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and others.)

    - why exactly do you bother converting them all to MP3 ? It seems kind of crazy to me. What's wrong with just listening to the CDs?

Some people use their PCs as Hi-Fi's. Like many of my friends, some are too scabby to buy CDs and they just borrow them off me and convert them to MP3 onto their fecking huge HDs. Lucky Biatches!
    (I have a 6gb :()

And with the money that I used to buy all these CDs could of paid for 2 40gb HDs. Grrrrrggghh!!!

It's far easier to click and drag an artist name into winamp's playlist than it is to find the cd, put it in, wait for the drive...

How about having a playlist of hundreds of files, and having songs picked at random? Can you do that with a hi-fi?

Yes...but Chicks dig big Hi-Fi's and big CD collections!

Chicks don't dig big Hard Drives and Empeethrees!

75gb , the mp3s take up about 43gb. I hope to get another 75gb drive soon and I'll move them all over to that. It will be the central server in this house and all the other comps can access them.

I do not have 2422 which means i have 9.45gb of free hard disk space

2545 on the Harddrive, over god knows how much space and I'd hazard a guess at about another 1000 backed up on CDs. I have yet to meet a woman impressed by this...

Well, tbh, even at 128kbps on my sh|tty speakers they sound great. at 160-192kbps you'd need finely tuned ears (and equipment to really differentiate between them and CDs.

Besides, if it's true audio clarity you'd be using Super Audio CD, DVD-Audio or DAT tape connected to lots of Hi-Fi equipment imported from some little know Japanese hand-crafted-in-the-home type speakers where they make the paneling from little trees exactly the same size as the speaker.
Much like Aprés Match's Cianti Moon Boot.

Course, you'd have em hooked up using Fibre-optic the whole way, or triple shielded depleted uranium coated silken-main-of-the-mythical-unicorn type connections.
If you were serious about it.
    Heck, even 96kbps is ok.

hmm.... Fibre-optic, triple shielded depleted uranium coated silken-main-of-the-mythical-unicorn connectors i must have a look in compustore

Oh, btw, I have about 4000 mp3s scattered on many CDs in many .tar files.
Thank god for linux, AGSat and a fast net connection :)

    You can use Winamp
or search for a program called "list files"
    or "list mp3 files"

    ****ty speakers. theres ur problem.

it's quite blatant on my comp(sound blaster live card and boston acoustics ba7500 speakers) the difference between 192kbps mp3s and cds. it's even more blatant if you go from playin a cd on a decent hifi setup to the comp.

    I thought that i was doing well with 700+ mp3s. :(

As for those that say they have 10,000 and 12,000, well im skeptical.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

I wouldn't say I'm skeptical, I'm just in awe at the waste of space.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 842 ✭✭✭the celtic tiger

    i have around 700/800.

In answer to the sceptisism and the waste of space issues, i do have almost 12,000 i posted a link to a list of the albums in another thread here recently, and I don't keep them on a harddrive, i keep them on what is currently 88 CDR's but if I get a big enough harddrive I'll throw them on to it.

Also it seems a lot of ppl are saying how many they've lost rather than how many they have, perhaps you should all look into storing them on CD yourselves and this wouldn't happen.

    One thousand.

    And two.

_- and about 250 CD's waiting to be encoded for DJ'ing.

What kbps are your mp3s in? I find that if you are gonna brun the mp3s the kbps should be at least 160, preferably 192

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Most of mine (ones that I ripped from my own cd's) are encoding using variable bit rates, which gives quite good quality. I'd say its somewhat similar to 160kbps.
