Stepstone's gone belly-up, in UK anyways.
StepStone to shut down in the UK
    Friday, November 02 2001
    by Andrew McLindon
    Send story to a friend
    Print this story
On-line recruitment company StepStone has taken its Irish operation temporarily off-line following the liquidation of its UK business.
StepStone said on Friday that it would no longer fund its loss-making UK operation and that the director of the UK subsidiary had asked shareholders to appoint liquidators.

A spokesperson for StepStone said that the company's 12 employees in its Irish office, which is run by the UK office, had not been laid-off and that its office would remain open while a business review took place. However, the spokesperson said he could not put a timescale on the completion of this review.

On Friday, stepstone.ie carried the message - "site currently down, more information soon". The spokesperson could not say exactly when the site's services would re-appear, as this would have a lot to do with the liquidator in the UK, but added that he was sure it would return. "There has been interest from various parties in our operations in various countries and Ireland falls into that category," he said.

StepStone moved into the Irish market in April 2000 with the purchase of JobFinder.ie from its founder Frank Quinn, the publisher of PC Live and Computerscope. That deal was worth over IEP7 million, including IEP3.9 million in cash, at the time it was announced.

When asked whether he would be interested in purchasing the Irish operation, Quinn said he would be wary because of the changed market conditions since he operated JobFinder, but said he was "keeping an open mind" on the issue.

In a statement released on Friday, StepStone said that its current cash position combined with the present economic climate meant it could not sustain its current levels of investment across Europe. As a result, it would be looking to pull out of some of the 17 countries it operates in with a loss of around 500 jobs. StepStone has already cut its workforce by around 300 this year and at the end of the third quarter it had a headcount of 876. When the latest rounds of cuts have taken place that number will fall to less than 350.

The company will continue to be based out of Norway, but its business operations will concentrate on its three most successful markets; Germany, Belgium and Denmark. It also said it would look to grow its business in Norway, Sweden, Finland, that Netherlands and Luxembourg.

The news follows another round of disappointing results and a warning that unless it raises sufficient funds it might be forced out of business. According to its results for Q3 2001, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) amounted to a loss of EUR16.7 million. In Q2 of 2001 it reported a loss of EUR29.9 million. Revenues were down to EUR13.4 million in Q3 from EUR17.1 million in Q2 2001. StepStone said that while Belgium, Denmark and Germany had performed well, results from other markets, particularly the UK, France and Italy, had been "disappointing."

StepStone also said that as of 30 September 2001, the company had cash or cash equivalents of EUR22.5 million down from EUR46.9 million at the end of the second quarter. In a statement the company said it had enough cash to complete its planned fund raising process. "However, if sufficient funds are not forthcoming within the planned timescale the company will be unable to continue trading as a going concern," it continued. The fund raising process is said to be in an advanced stage.

StepStone also announced on Friday the appointment of Colin Tenwick as chief executive officer. He fills the position left vacant following Giles Clarke's resignation in July. Tenwick is the former vice president and general manager of Linux and open source software solutions company Red Hat Europe.

I'm very fond of www.recruitireland.com, and it's certainly far superior to monster.ie or topjobs.ie: it's pretty much neck and neck with irishjobs, but I find it handles your CV much better.

I think RecruitIreland is a grand old site. IrishJobs is good too.
What was stepstone called before ? It was a fine site until they redesigned it. And now its dead.

It was called jobfinder, run by Frank Quinn's Scope publishers - eh, PC Live, Computerscope, Irish Computer?

Well I honestly have to say http://www.jobserve.com is very very good. There is always a load of offers on it for IT jobs mainly in the UK but if you need a job you need a job.

I tend to go to CPL when I'm looking for a job. I got my last 3 jobs through them and would recommend going to them if you're going to an agency in Ireland. Look for yourself first though, just do a search on Irish software companies and look at the careers links. That's what I'll do from now on. Most the agencies have the same jobs at the moment.

Came accross a good site recently @ www.irelandhiring.ie. Seems pretty good. They have a part i like that allows you to put an ad. about yourself in for people to see and get back to you if they have a job for you.

They are also advertising some workshops on getting a job....could be worth a try....they appear to be free!

    ;)

just go to a search engine (I use altavista http://www.altavista.com or google http://www.google.com) then type in job search or something relating that topic. It will come up with loads of matches but http://www.irish-jobs.ie is probably on of the best

There's plenty of information about the industry and helps you find accommodation too. Seems pretty good and is worth a look!

For jobs all over the world you can't beat monster.com

It has great local listings and you'll find the relevant local monster site has loads of vacancies as well as other useful info.

It's good too 'cos you can set it up so you get email notifications of new positions which are suitable to you - choose by keyword, job catagory, location etc.

I have used it when travelling before and it worked for me

http://www.heanet.ie/vacancies/ is useful for lecturing/research/IT/admin/library jobs in Irish colleges and universites. It also lists scholarship vacancies.

http://www.jobs.thes.co.uk/ has similar job listings in the UK (with a few international posts thrown in as well).

http://chronicle.com/jobs/ lists jobs in US colleges (with some international vacancies).

http://www.phinished.org/links/Job_Searches_and_Employment/ is a good place to start for anyone considering searching for an academic job in the US, with numerous links to job hunting advice and listings.

My personal favourite (I work there) is www.jobs.ie

Typically you will find a lot of smaller or more interesting companies advertising on this site than on other sites .... also less agencies.

You will see many of the same jobs that are on www.nixers.com as they are the same company.

If anyone has criticisms, please send them on. Given the sarcastic bunch on these boards I expect there will be...

It is on my mind to try a thread on boards.ie to invite criticisms and discuss ways to improve our site & jobs sites in general. Would this be a welcome thread or am I in the realm of self-promotion?

    m:dunno:

As the number of recruiters and jobsites grow, the quality of them should go up as well. But it is hard to achieve that without visitor input. I would like to invite all boards.ie visitors to give out there and help to help them. Like I work for another jobsite (and it is not only a jobsite) www.learn4good.com and find it hard to get reviews (true ones) . So as it said above by jobs.ie guy, we are asking for some feedback. All opinions are welcome.

do it on the web board. after all, that is the critisism youa re looking for, isnt it?
stick it here and i will call it self promotion, and will have to start charging you money for taking up advertising space :)

Well, for one thing if I look for jobs in Cork I shouldn't be offered jobs from the far east :/
