Need to lose 2 Stone

    Hi all,

Quit the smokes 2 years ago and while its one of the best things I have done health wise, shape wise things have not gone well. There may be other reasons too, but the bottom line is I went from average 5'11 and 12 Stone to a heavy 14 Stone over the last 2 years. My diet is reasonable I think but I have a fondness for processed foods such as crisps and even healthier food I eat too much of. Exercise wise I'm doing nothing except a game or 2 of squash a week.
I want to turn things around and have given myself the target of losing 1 stone over the next 6 months. I don't mind working out but I think I need a regime change and probably an exercise and diet plan.

    Any ideas? Where to start??

Cut the carbs. Do you eat a lot of bread? If you do, leave it out and after a week or two you will deffo lose a few pounds. Do you eat breakfast rolls? Heard a nutritionist on the radio giving out about them. She said the size of them is massive and is a cause why more Irish people are getting fatter. She also advised not skipping breakfast but having fruit, yoghurt or the like.

I eat sandwiches at lunchtime every day, either white or brown bread.

what would be a good subsitute for this. Im not big into salads etc and i was thinking tortila wraps with chicken. Something along those lines.

Sorry to hijack the thread but i think it could be benificial to all whole want to loose a few pounds.

The brown bread sandwich is less fattening than the white bread option. A wrap is about the same as two slices of white bread. Opt for brown pasta and rice as well. Drink green tea, it boosts your fat burning metabobilism. Cut down on processed crap like crisps etc. Train yourself to enjoy whole unprocessed food.

Fitness wise, cardio works better for me than weight lifting when it comes to losing weight. Try doing 20 mins of jogging 3 times a week, and up it gradually to 30 mins when you feel absolutely comfortable (try and keep at 20 for at least a month, you'll feel great after about 2 weeks but you might not notice slight muscle problems creeping up on you).

Brown bread is NOT less fattening - more fibre yes. If you eat too much of it it will still cause weight gain.

Totally agree with cutting the junk food and yes do aerobic exercise every day if possible 30-60mins walking/jogging etc

This is true, but fibre fills you up. THerefore you will probably eat less if you eat brown bread than white.

My advice is to follow the GI Diet -I've lost 3 stone on it (the truth). Well, that and going to the gym 4 times a week :D

You can find info on www.gidiet.com. You dont necessarily have to buy the book(s) but they're a good place to start and explain the basic concepts well.

You don't necessarily have to put your chicken into anything. Just have a chicken breast with a side of veg you like. But if you prefer sandwhiches do go for brown bread as it's healthier and has less carbs. Or eat your usual sambo but not every day. Everything in moderation is an option.

For snacks you could make your own fruit salad with whatever fruit you like or make shakes out of them. Yoghurt is another good snack. Some nuts are good if you're peckish. Porridge is a good breakfast cuz it fills you up (but prob best to substitue sugar for honey or fruit).

Also drink looooads of water. It helps your metabolism and sometimes the body confuses hunger with thirst. If you feel hungry try having a pint or two of water first, wait a while, and if your still hungry then go for it.

Try to get something to aim for like running a mini marathon. This will increase and focus your training. Or perhaps enter a squash tournament??
