Why am i banned!!!!!!

I'm not banned, but lately loads of people have posted here before asking a mod some simple questions

Why was I banned?
Who banned me?
When will the ban be lifted.
What are next weeks lotto numbers.

Koneko posted a thread earlier to SomethingAwful. I noticed that they have a Leper's Colony similar to Prison here i guess.

Would it be possible to implement something like this here?
When a mod/smod bans a user could they be pm'd a link to such a list.

I always liked their banlist, it's handy, so I would be in favour of this, but I think the admins are already busy folks, especially now (after the upgrade, still stuff to do).

I know there still is work being done SW/HW upgrades and fixing everything else.
Just something I think could work well here if it was easy to implement at a later stage.

It sounds like a cool idea alright.

It would be good for moderators looking to make ambiguous decisions as well, such as "Do I ban this guy for being annoying in the following way". They could just look down the list of previous offences.

I think the idea was that mods could see a person's ban record. It would make it easier and quicker to spot serial trolls etc and help protect normally well behaved posters.

probably have to type in when you ban them. Same way you can give a reason when deleting posts.

Incidentally, obviously DeV and the rest of the admins have banned many more accounts that the lists states, this must have happened some time before a certain upgrade which shows what specific admin banned the specific user. There is an obscene amount of sitebanned users in the entire database.

Yep, a version of vbulletin added this stuff a while back. The list only goes to July of last year afaik.

Could you link to the profiles of everyone involved? Could be funny to see their last posts outside prison when search is back..

I assume it'd be as easy as changing the query to cross reference username and userid, then linking to the profile

from what I gather the new version of vBulletin gives smods and admin the option to enter a reason when making a ban. so when a banned user visits the site they get a message listing their sentence and the reason for the ban.

do we get to take bets on which admin/smod has the most bans at the end of each year?

Yeah it's an upgrade feature. Now when a user logs in, they can see why they've been banned (if you gave a reason) and a date when the ban will be lifted.

There is a space for recording reasons for site-bans.
However until now the only people that could see those reasons were admins and s-mods so mostly I haven't bothered to fill it in.
There is no such capability with forum-bans, at present.

Their bans tend to be more lenient, but more frequently given. Site-bans that are not no-brainers (Spammers, previously site-banned people re-regging, clearly illegal content) are pretty rare. On balance therefore I think we are actually more lenient.

And the banned user themselves it would seem. Resulting in much hilarity for older bannees when they're told "You have been banned for the following reason: None".
