Medically overweight!

Yay! Well I came back from America and found out that according to the ever faithful BMI I'm overweight...joy!
Left at 11 stone and came back a fair bit over 12...oops!
Funny thing is all my clothes still fit fine, including all pants, odd I thought. I knew I put weight on over the summer but I couldnt believe when I got home it was that much.
Funny thing was people have been asking if I was working out over the summer, I just always laugh and say yes.
But how could I not have become a fatty? Very broke so I'd a very poor diet and was drinking about 40 pints a week (equivalent).
In one sitting in MaccyDs I had 3 big macs, 2 mcchicken sandwhichs a small fries and lots of coke refills... all over $7
Sometimes ate once or twice a day but when I did..oh boy.

The thing that makes me scratch my head was the fact it didn't just fall off, back since start of september. Think its slowly coming off now but still a stone overweight. Before I left I'd been the same weight for at least 1.5 years. Maybe I don't change weight easily.

Anyway this rambling point is more of self-reminder to myself that I should do something about it.
Exercise wise I get a hilly 30minutes on the bike at least 5 times a week. Since the bike broke I've been getting 1.30hr walk on those days.

I don't eat sweets, crisps, chocolate (expect very, very rarely), fizzy drinks except diet coke which I really should give up again. I have the odd chipper, once a week or two I'd say. Don't eat white bread when I can, don't drink coffee. I snack on fruit or yogurts.

Thought I would have lost the weight quickly with such a diet change but I haven't.
    Play squash the odd time.

    anymore advice?

(Ive attached a pic of me, overweight on the BMI scale)

Weight should definitley come off with those changes. Just give it time.

I wouldn't put a lot of faith in the BMI anyway......................

There are two main reasons that you didn't just drop the extra weight.

    (1) Losing weight in a healthy way does take time.
    (2) Your level of exercise is probably burning marginally more caloreies than your intake. Most of the effect of your healthier diet was to stop the weight gain.

What you're doing is the perfect way to do it in my view. Eat healthily and excercise a decent amount and your fitness willl improve and your weight will drop over time.

Ignore the BMI, it's useless since it doesn't take into account the fact that muscle weighs more than fat. Height and weight measurements are not a good indication. Do you think you have gotten flabby or something?
From the pic you are far from overweight. Ignore BMI!

    Oh Dear.....

    Must..... Resist..... Posting.......

    Can't.... Heeelp... Myself........

BMI are a good guideline which apply to most people unless they are non-caucasian or athletic when it is better to give an integer or two leeway. They are a screening tool to decide in the context of the overall health of the person whether or not further weight loss is appropriate.

There is a HOST of medical statistical irrefutable trials which prove undeniably that BMI's are effective.

But I don't do any weight training so to become overweight made me go..huh.
So I think I'll do something about it now.
This was not meant to me a BMI debate!

I knew I was becoming overweight without scales, you can just tell like belly isn't as flat over I can't see my those frontal hip bones as easily etc.

Think I'll make a big effort to lose the weight and go back to my old ways when its off and it should even out.

Also not a gym member for financial reasons, I planned on trying to bulk up this year but I can't know so I'll just concentrate on losing excess weight.
