TY... an extra year for LC??

My school are treating my year as mainly an extra year to study for LC, Maths is soo bad.. its just like last year and in a/c we are in with the 5th years!
And we are neglected too... we are at the back of the school (new prefabs) and the wireless connectivity doesnt reach out to were we are... so anywork we do on the laptops we have to go to another room to get on the network. No internet and we cant even get on virtual classroom.. our teachers are cracking up because half of our classes are on virtual classroom, and we cant send any work from class to virtual homework .. we have to wait til study!

We have 3 classes on Tuesday and from 10.30 until 4 we do othe stuff. The school has a patnership with the UL so we are in there most weeks but then like last week i went go karting, in 2 weeks i'm going horse riging and then paintball, surfing (etc.)... The UL is cool, because we were with Munster one day for a while and another time 3 Limerick Lions players had a game of b-ball with some of us! It was them and 2 trainers and then 5 of us... they won (obvuiously) ...
Then there are one or two thiings that we get time off, i was away last week and then i missed classes another day because i was at a mini company thing, and then we'll be having chinese culture for a while etc... but really they dont seem to want to take us outta class!
Is that kinda stuff going on everywhere??

    Wow, wireless connectivity.

We hold our network together with duct tape.

As far as I know, it's illegal or somesuch to do the LC syllabus during TY. (However, everybody does it anyway, I suspect. We're doing leaving cert maths, but it's just pass...)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 779 ✭✭✭Flashling

Illegal? I thought that that was one of the arguments for fourth year? That you get more time to study for the leaving cert? Madness....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

Well, in a way you do.
You can brush up your general Irish language skills/work out any difficulties you had with maths, that sort of thing. But you're not allowed to start working on the LC course. It's unfair on those who don't/can't do TY, you see.

what happened in my TY was that they did leaving cert subjects with us but only for us to get a taste as to what they were like.

don't complain about wireless connectivity until you've gone to DIT kevin street :)

yea I'd rather a bad wireless network than a laggy wired network for IT

I definatly don't get the impression that TY is just another LC year in our school, we do a bit of LC work in Maths to get a taste but apart from that its all been non-LC related.

In my school they did part of the Maths LC course in TY to give us an introduction and started afresh at the 1st chaper of the book again at the start of 5th year. It was a great idea because many of us tried Higher Level Maths in TY and realised just how hard it would be and dropped to Ordinary at the start of 5th year. You may think that your school are using it as an extra LC year but more than likely at the start of 5th year you'll see that it was all just preparation.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,479 ✭✭✭✭philologos

yea thats my assumption on it as well. I now know that I won't be able to do higher maths for the LC so I'll stick to ordinary next year. I like experimentation with things and thats what TY is all about.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 400 ✭✭TalkISCheap

Mine is 90% academic. We have a few token activities but it's all LC work in LC subjects. Yes, Maths is making me mildly suicidal...

It's not illegal, but it's against Departmental Regulations.

    Mmmm, Capitalised...

    Sure, sure you wouldn't!

My school makes us do 6 weeks in every subject so we can see what we want to do for the leaving cert.....Biology or classics? French or spanish?!Someone decide for me!

TY in my school isn't that focused on academics. We do LC maths and Irish but it's done very slowy - We're still on chapter one in maths! The year is more focused on trying new things, for example, two weeks work experience, fencing (which rocks), speech and drama, a musical with another school, film making, ECDL, various trips and a lot of other things! It's brilliant :)

So, technically, if I do any form of drugs, I can't be cool?

    Ever take a painkiller jakkass?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

Omg stay away from painkillers Fobia, you get addicted to them and then you end up injecting them into your eyeballs and living on the streets and committing crime and all your teeth fall out and you turn into a stoner.

I've a long way to go so. I've only injected them into my arms.

I try to avoid painkillers unless they are like uber neccessary

Wow. Jakkass sounds like me. A lying me.

    *stern voice*Now stay on topic!

Yes, transition year is an extra year for the Lc. On account of it being an extra year before the Lc.

Like when there's near 0 yokes going around? I know what you mean alright!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

Erm, ahem... as far as TY being an extra year for the LC, it definitely is for language subjects, what with them not having a particularly set syllabus. Actually we're doing one of the short stories on the Irish LC course but, ahem, only for... 'cultural reasons', of course. *coughs*

Jakkass, painkillers are never necessary. Only a junkie tries to justify their usage. As if a broken leg needs painkillers.

Delusion is a wonderful thing. Yeah, I didn't log out and my brothers have told me they posted in my name, so if you see some weird posts...

On topic, we're doing the course in maths, is that not allowed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭Diarmsquid

Apparently not, there's supposed to be a set TY sylibus. We're doing LC stuff too though. But also, other stuff like Modulo Arithmathic.

Well thats certainly a bad thing. People shouldnt be encouraged to drop down to pass maths. There are very few things you can do in college with out some level of mathematical backgorund. Even things like psychology and sociology, which are full of stats.

Leaving Cert Maths is fifficult just like Leaving Cert English is difficult. The reason so many people don't do it is because of its undeserved reputation for being impossible.

And also, you say its all just preperation? Junior certificate maths is prepertation for Leaving Cert. Anything you do in TY will most likely be part of the leaving cert course.

I thought it was Modulo Arithmathic, but now I'm not sure. We didn't pull anything of of our hats. Just wrote. He said it was on the GCSE course in England.

I want to do the Modulo Arithmathic your school are doing.

Its not encouraging people to drop down to pass maths its just helping people to be realistic about doing higher level maths for the leaving cert and perhaps they arent just capable of it. I have already decided thanks to 4th year that im going to do Ordinary level maths for LC because i got a D in the Junior Cert Higher and I find the LC Ordinary Level difficult enough already

Since when did your ability to pull things out of hats depend on what school you're in? Some creativity, man!
    I'm stupid.

Think I might adopt that as a sign-off. Looks cooler than "dave", anyway.
