Speaking of slightly unusual college wanderers, has anyone ever met "The Ultimate Living Poet".
She is this crazy russian lady who will accost you for hours and try to get you to introduce her to people who will pay to hear her poetry. She wants to build a giant football monument in Trinity to commemorate the beauty of sport, or some such nonsence and invite Roman Abromavich to see it. she also asked me is it fair to use a tumble dryer to dry ones Runners. she lives out of a trolley on wheels and claims to be the Ultimate Living Poet. She has an MA from Moscow University in English or something. Really Scary.

    Modern Day Rasputin.

she has this strange kind of gift to make you unable to leave. you cant help but listen to her, and agree with her. she is scary. i saw her in james hospital the other day in a huge white dress and a white hat.

****ing hell, i met her too.
On the way home from school last year. She stopped me and asked what school i was from. Then asked would she be able to have a poetry reading session in my school. I told her she wouldn't get any respect or 8euros of students that she said she wanted. Went on for ages about how poetry doesn't get the respect it deserves. She has an extraordinary ability to make u stay. She was dressed in black. Said she is the ultimate living poet, but when i asked her about other poets like Heaney, Boland etc. she criticised each of them at length. She did admit Yeats and other dead poets were better but she is the best alive. SO then i asked her to see hers if it was so good. Said i'd have to pay to listen to it. She was a nutter but I felt like a muppet afterwards for staying there for 30mins but she was so weird. Only reason I did stay was because I thought my friend knew her well. As soon as i found out he didn't we left. He had been there before me talking to her, for about 10mins!

    Craziest person I've ever met.

I got accosted once by her and then have been avoiding her ever since.

I saw her in st. james's too and made a bee-line into X-Ray to avoid her.

Matt the Jap is cool and he speaks over 10 different languages and has a DSc - which is better than most lecturers in Trinity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Matt is not a friendly guy, he is a waster leecher who comes in and takes off people in college because thye are too nice to tell him to **** off.
Once Joe O Gorman gave him 20 quid and now he goes up to him every week to get another 20 quid off him.
He takes the newspapers out of the GMB, and generally annoys people.
I couldn't care less if he has 50 PhD's, it doesn't change what he does. Infact it makes him worse.

He is a leech and the sooner he leaves trinity the better

if he takes the papers out of the GMB, why does he go into the SU shop and get them there?

The other threads above all say he is deaf and dumb. Maybe he can write all these languages though? I've seem him around the place a few times, mostly near the GMB. Seems like a nice fellow, though others will say otherwise. There are an awful lot of rumours about him though. Has anyone talked to him properly?

If you want to annoy the Russian woman, tell her that Russia is afraid of its communist past. Watch the reaction.

He gets Le Monde in the SU shop, and tends to take the Times and the Guardian from the GMB.

I've gotten to know Matteo fairly well over the last 6 years in college. He is a charming fellow, but gets frustrated when people don't understand him.

I buy him the odd sandwich or two as well. Bought him a pint a couple of times.

Was cool to meet him at the ball! He loved to be there.....

Thats exactly what happened to me. She wanted me to give her a reference for my old primary school. And i wouldn't, so she made me dictate something convincing sounding. And then asked me how would she get into the school without the secretary seeing her.

She says the english dept in my school don't know anything about poetry.

Completely mad, i saw her in James Hospital last week as well, i nearly died. All the other student nurses thought i had cracked when i started shrieking "Its the ultimate livng poet" and covered my face with my collar.

She lives in my town, which is so much worse.

I'm pretty sure I walked by him during the summer on my way to the Dart going through Trinity, does he look about 170 years old, and walks unbelievably, ridiculously slow? I saw him and my heart went out to him, I imagined him to be a lonely old mad ravaged by arthritis or something which caused him to walk so painfully slowly.

The story behind him is, I think, one of the best stories I've ever heard, and I can't believe it's all true. Everything about him is just utterly brilliant. I presume he's not homeless? How does he get by?

Some people give him money. He gets food and drink in TCD also. He has a flat which the Health support to some degree with rent allowance.

He was a lecturer but lost his hearing. That I believe led to psychological problems. He has a masters degree. I am not aware of any D.Sc. His masters thesis wes on something like the movement of knowledge from Arbia into Europe. I believe it was financed by someone in the Saudi Arabian authorities. I am aware he has French Spanish and Chinese in addition to English. I have witnessd him "converse" with people in the first two at least.
His was called "matt the Jap" until the TN or the Record ran a complaint from an American student about it being offensive. I asked him if the nick-name bothered him. He stated "look who wrote the complaint" . As it happens he is not japanese hence my assumption of the other language.

He is banned from the Library, apparently for defacing books - which he denies.

As regards him being a "leech" I think this is a very unchristian attitude. I would think he is part of the "Trinity Experience" and one can judge for oneself what sort of charachter deride abuse and make fun of him, as opposed to having a charitable attitude. Usually they are people who come from such priviledged backgrounds that if fees were introduced they would still not have to work and their parents would pay them! This is the type that the tax payers of this country subsidise in order for them to call others leeches!

he always used to go the filmakers films that we're on in the Hist every Thursday last year.
he looked harmless enough and never caused any trouble at least when i was there.

i remember he had a really bad cold at one of them and coughed the whole way through....

Yes, all well and good until you remember that he's banned from the SU Shop for attacking one of the full time staff. And trying to steal one of the signs.

That guy hates me. And he comes by every night, when it's only student staff left, looking for a newspaper or two. And I never give it to him. I enjoy my lack of compassion :P

Then there's all the pissing he does in Front Square...

the russian poet knows no looks of "P*ss off you old battleaxe", she just goes straight for your social jugular.

At least if its PLAN or CONCERN you can lie and say you already joined last week.

There's a long article on him in this week's 'Trinity News'. It's on page 3 and goes as follows:

"College personality Mr Matteo Matubara has received warm letters of thanks from both Prince William and Prince Harry. Mr Matubara, an elderly Japanese man who is a regular fixture around campus, had sent long letters of congratulations to both princes in recent months.

Matt', a former Trinity post-graduate student, wrote to wish Prince Harry well on his recent twenty first birthday and congratulated Prince William on his graduation from St. Andrew's University. Representatives of each of the princes responded, thanking Mr Matubara for his kind letters.

This is not the first time Mr Matubara has corresponded with major international figures. William and Harry's late mother, Princess Diana, exchanged letters with him in the mid nineties. The French educated Matubara has also corresponded with Bill Clinton, Jacques Chirac and Tony Blair in the past. More recently, Mary McAleese wished Matt a return to health after a period of illness two years ago.

Mr Matuara spends much of his time on campus and has acquired a degree of fame among Trinity students. He has been deaf and dumb since birth but is proficient in at least six languages. In recent years Matt has been at the centre of a number of controversial disputes with college authorities..."

It then goes on to show some of the letters...

Well I'm not Christian so I don't mind not having a very christian attitude.
This isn't about charity, this is about someone who abuses the facilities.
He attacks students, staff, and is generally abusive towards people who he doesn't like.

He is demanding from people, and demands they do this and that for him, for no particular reason.
One time a girl in the arts block was sitting in a lecture from some foreign economist, however she was sitting in what he saw as his seat, and started going nuts at her, almost hitting her, until he was escorted from the arts block.

He also attacked a staff member of the SU Shop for her stopping him from stealing.

I don't care if he is cute, or old, he is a total leech, who abuses his knowledge and peoples good will in general for his own selfish purposes.

The only reason people tolerate him is because he doesn't talk.

Can somebody interview him and find out the real facts? I mean... why hasnt someone sat the bloke down with a cup of tea and some jaffa cakes and conducted a written interview? Theres far too many stories going around about him and hes always around campus... someone solve the mystery. Theres too many unanswered questions floating about.

Hardly censorship, he's been sitebanned and all posts deleted by a higher authority already anyway..

w.r.t. to matteo matubara (matt the jap). Frankiestylee, there's no mystery about him. There are rumours granted, but he's been discussed before:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=187840
And i think if you read through that thread, mostly on page 2, pretty much all of your questions will be answered.
