Im sure it annoys alot of people here to see teens hanging around the street in gangs making noise at night and speaking as ateen who does this i dont particularly love it either. Its boring but its better than sitting in watching tv.
I dont really know what im asking i just feel there should be something done(and i dont know what would solve the problem)Anybody any suggestions?

No, everyone's been a bored teen at some stage, as long as they are not acting the bóllix breaking things then let em be I say.

We would always have an old house or somewhere warm to sit. We'd do it up like its our own house. I'd say we would have had about 3 or 4 decent "berths" (as we would call them) back then. That was always the excuse though, "nothing to do". I agree, there isn't.

Don't use your real name on the internet forums btw. :)

Hang out in fields light fires, fight, drink, joyride around the field i dont care just stop shouting at 5am about whether to walk or get a taxi.

This happended to me 2 nights in a row being woken up by some loud teenagers who hang out round the corner from my house having an argument about getting a taxi at 5am

It's funny... the teens who hang out on the corner on one end of the street are all assholes and always smart comments to make about everyone passing by... they've taken to running away when I pass by due to some past confrontations I've had with them... but the teens who hang out on the corner on the other end of the street are really nice and always say hello to me.

Oh.. and I'm pretty sure there is plenty of stuff on television... and we didn't have internet forums when I was a teenager either..

then you are clearly the best person to answer this question, and indeed to do something about it as it concerns you quite deeply.

What would you want to do instead, if it were a perfect world? And would there be any way to make it happen?

What i can't stand is muppets on corners askin for a fag when ya walk past and when you keep goin havin abuse thrown at you, that's not bored teenagers, that's just s***heads. Nothin worng with teenagers hangin around in groups as long as they ain't shoutin abuse at people walking past.

Put 'em in the army!! That'll sort 'em out...

No, serious now... I have no problem as long as they are quiet and respect others rights. There are some severe attitude problems out there though.

I used to hang around a lot meself, it's part of growing up. I did not cause trouble though. Got to the stage when the locals actually complimented us on our behaviour... some of the older neighbours actually felt safer knowing we were around.

I suppose teens hanging around street corners in Jobstown means a totally different thing to ones throwing rugby balls around to each other in Dalkey.

Dalkey gets it's fair share of knacks as well. Obviously they don't live there but they come down on the train to cause agro for everyone.

Ah c'mon Katie think for yourself buddy. Nothing is worse than boring, uncommitted teens. So you're bored. So your street is crappy guess what? It's your fault. Stand up and make something of your life. Take a stand at school. Believe in something. Go on a country trek. Get a life. Volunteer. Make a difference.
You're post is an accurate reflection of just how boring and uncreative todays teenagers are.

"But Pighead theres nothing for us to do,they closed down the community centre sniffle sniffle"
Community centres?Fcuk them, surely between one of your street corner gang you can think of something to do.Even if its a bit mischievous and might get you into a bit of trouble just do it.You're meant to be bold and annoying.
Anyway i advice you and your pals to give up boards Katie as it seems to be stunting your imagination.

Here's one - go féck off home and do some homework/study.

BTW, if it doesn't make you feel the business holding up walls, chucking litter around, putting a scare into the elderly people who have to shuffle by you and your fellow dead-enders on the way back from the shops etc, why do you do it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,231 ✭✭✭✭Sparky

i dont mind them hanging around corners or sitting on walls, but there is a certain group especially around now that like to hurl abuse at people and throw bangers at the odd passing car
Atleast one last week was an unmarked garda car, thats why its quiet for a while.
Btw isnt there something that 6 or more is loitering and they should move on?
Ive often seen 12 or more and they intimidate old people by making them walk out on the road.

Just as long as you stay out of the clubs Katie.

What's the story with the attempt-to-stare-menacingly-at-passers-by thing that groups of teenagers seem to spend all day doing when propping up the wall?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,816 ✭✭✭Calibos

    Teen - "We're bored!!"

Me - "What about the Bowling Alley?"

    Teen - "We're barred"

Me - "What about the Cinema?"

    Teen - "We're barred"

Me - "What about the Pool hall"

    Teen - "We're barred"

Me - "What about the Youth club"

    Teen - "We're barred"

Me - "What about the Amusements"

    Teen - "We're barred"

    etc etc etc

Me - "Well stop acting the bollix then and maybe you would have something to do!"

I do my homework i go to after school study, get it all done plus some study by 6 o clock.Theres nothin to do for the rest of the night!
And yeah itd be great to be able to go to the cinema, pool, amusements etc. every night but ya can only go about once a week cause they all cost money!
Theres no youth clubs around here except one for primary school kids who wouldnt be out hanging around anyway!

I think teenagers who hang around street corners are given a bad reputation as intimidating passers-by.
I used to hang around on the street with mates and we did nothing anti-social, we weren't loud, we were doing nothing wrong and still we were told to move on.

    But move on where?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

I never hung out on the streets when I was younger. I don't see why people have to do that...

This'll solve all your problems. Doesn't even matter if your barred from everywhere!

Good question and im sure its something that pi$$es us all off. Best thing to do is put urself in their shoes and think of what wud scare them.

When i was growing up we had same problem in street. Me neighbour got tired of it one day and put a balaclava on, grabbed a crowbar and snuck up on them. He grabbed the "toughest" looking one threatened him and told them not to hang around there.

Not politically correct i know but it worked.

Maybe if some permanent clubs/discos were built in various areas... I know I'd prefer to go to a club than hang out on the corner.

I was never into the whole hangin out on the street thing... some of my friends were, and ended up gettin into all sorts of stuff, so I stopped hangin out with them. They've obviously grown up since then, so I see some of them again.

I don't have much to add, lol...

Man, I remember when hanging out, sitting on a wall, doing nothing was a good night out. Those were the days, my friends, those were the days. I say why let the kids have all the fun, I'm going to go back to my old street corner hang out*.

*I may not actually do this

€ is a factor too. We want free things.

I used to hang around on my street with friends, just sat on the wall of a private clinic(which was closed so we weren't really annoying anyone by being there) or kicked/threw a ball around.Pretty innocent stuff. Noone on our road seemed to care except one psycho who used to come out and tell us that we were keeping her kids awake, when it was common knowledge that she didn't have any kids.
I don't really see a problem with kids hanging around the roads or on greens as long as they're not p1ssing other people off by making loads of noise, harassing passer-bys etc.
Saying that though, it's not a problem in my area as there's no kids(old enough to hang around outside at night) living near by.

never really saw the point of hanging around a street at night when its cold, always thought being indoors would be a better opption....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,247 ✭✭✭✭Guy:Incognito

We were real inventive as kids. We found a pig, killed it, pulled out its bladder , filled it with air then covered it in leather we made after we killed a cow. Them we invented, and played a game we christened "football".I belive there are many such activities that fall under this umbrella term that all the cool kids use. I believe it's called "sports". Funnilly enough, I dont remember being bored as a kid. All this during the eighties and before t'internet.

what's all this complaining about being moved on and not having anything to do? is standing on a street corner fun?

if you're THAT desperate for stuff to do either go to a park and play footie or help ireland's obesity issue and sit on your ass playing pro evo

That is one of lifes little mysteries... I think, though, that it could also be an outward manifestation of myopia... caused by trying to keep a sharp lookout for adults while engaged in petty acts of vandalism etc.

My god, if you're so bored will you just get some hobbies? There's a bit more to life than doing homework and hanging around in the cold on the street.

You're asking for things to be done to give you something to do but has it occurred that sometimes you have to entertain yourself? Not everything is going to be handed to you on a plate.

    Kids these days... *mutters*

See, back in my day, we didn't have these fancy games and toys that tell you how to play them. Oh no, we had rocks. Rocks and little twigs. And lego. Had to make our own games, oh yes we did. We called them Rock, Twig and Leg.

(Also: am I the only one who thought that this thread was going to be about prostitutes?)
