Ok, I know we sometimes get a hard time on this forum, but stand tall, people. Don't be shy.

Other than myself (CSLL SF) I see Joe (agent smith) has got it (Deaf Studies JF). Anyone else?

Neil, what about you? Ronan seems to have withdrawn his nomination. You didn't **** up too badly last year.

Ms. Stargal also deserves a mention...

    [plug]

Full contested nominations as well as elected reps on this page.

    [/plug]

In the moments where you feel pity, please note the time I posted the final thread, and also note that the time should really be + 1.

second that question. do you actually have to go meetings and stuff/what happens if you don't? decided to be class rep this year and i now represent a massive class of six people.main reason for this is that somebody told me too but have now warmed to the idea cos have realised potential for abuse (is it possible to request funds from college for class social events even a meager e100 could provide for many classy social events e.g 7 bottles of buckfast and a sixpack each)

Heh. I have to agree, most of the class reps I have met definitely have a desperate penchant for upwards-mobility and political ambition..I've yet to meet one who just wanted to make things better for everyone. It's like a microcosm of the government really..
    Dogs are cool though.

Dogs do all the things you mentioned, and they bark as well and keep people awake at night..

There are 166 TD's in the Dáil. That's not many. At all. Only 1 or 2 political party members per 1000 gets into the Dáil. Most class reps I know are intelligent people. They're rarely doing it for political ambition. I think you confuse an interest in politics activitiy with political ambition.
I've yet to meet one who just wanted to make things better for everyone.
Crash_000, Ronny Mitchell, Agent Smith (but I suspect he's doing it for the ladies), Stargal, Andrew_83, EduMyth. They're hardly in it for the seat in the Dáil.
It's like a microcosm of the government really..
How many members of the government, or the Oireachtas in general, or members of the local authorities, do you know/have read up sufficiently on to make such a claim?

Seriously, that's just apathy with a dose of stupid juice. I'm by no means a supporter of the government or anyone in it, but to say that people like Brian Cowen are only in it for the cash etc is a total joke. Just about any member of the govt. would get paid multiples of what they're paid in public office. Bertie's on about €140,000 a year, if I'm not mistaken. Are ya honestly saying that he couldn't make that money (even before we mention the amount he gives to the Fianna Fáil party) working for heading up a Labour Relations department or something?

Who mentioned cash? It's about power, not money.
We found one once that had been born a little prematurely (a lot prematurely) and over the next few days we realised where all the kittens went. Well I realised it when I saw the bloody thing's head hangin outta mother cat's mouth! Looks like she was farming the little mites so she could feast upon them.
Yeah some cats, especially if they're sick/undernourished (not saying you starved the thing, but worms cause malnourishment!) will eat their kittens, otherwise both mother and young would die. Seems cruel, but I guess it's a survival strategy..

    Money = power.

I've had moments of uber hackdom ("my name is cuckoo...and i'm a hack" cue group "hello cuckoo"), but no aspirations whatsover for the dail - the hours are crap, your family (let alone yourself) have little privacy and the job security isn't all that great.

So, instead i'm going to ingratiate myself with whatever group of sinister individuals who are running the world (tm conspiracy freaks) and pull strings from behind the scenes.

World leaders? My mere puppets! *insert evil cackle*

money does not neccessarily equal power in all contexts, some people don't have to have money to obtain it.

it just all about how other's percieve you (and the messages you give out to the world), some people have it, some don't.

That's not the argument honey. You missed out the small bit that said "Only 1 or 2 political party members per 1000 gets into the Dáil. Most class reps I know are intelligent people." Now I know that you may not have gotten this (sorry about that), but that implied that they're intelligent people who know that the odds of getting into the Dáil are exceptionally slim - and thus completely limits one's abillity for upward-ability. Taking what I said pertaining their level of intelligence (intelligence > 0), if they were upwardly mobile or seeking power the first thing they'd do is join the local branch of Fianna Fáil and become pally with the locals, doing everything that they want. The S.U. is decidely non-partisan, and even leans to the Left - policies which are represented only by about 25 seats in the Dáil at any one time, thus enforcing my point that the SU-policyish power is contained by a number of people whose quantity is less than that of those in this computer room.

You may say that Francis Kiernan joined the local FF branch and also ran for SU, and you'd be right. But you'd be failing to point out that he was resented by several people within the SU for such affiliations; and he's hardly an ardent Fianna Fáiler - occupying the Department of Education and what have you. From speaking to Francis a couple times because of FF/FG stuff, he seems like somebody who actually wants to achieve things (not that I necessarily agree with them) for the good of the people. I assure that there are people within the college that do hold that burning desire that ye speak of. John McGuirk is one, Trevor Breen is another. Ever hear of them? Doubt it. Because people who are actually power-hungry don't do the S.U.
Only one person can be president of the US at a time, don't mean there arn't millions of us who wouldn't be willing to take up the job(I wanna invade denmark, dunno why, just be something fun to do on a tuesday)
And you make fun of student politics ;).

And John is the most handsome class rep. But he's a power-seeking whore.

I have to disagree. I've had a few dealing with Francais, and he seems more intrested in his standing then anything else. On a personal note I'd like to point out that I've found him quite snotty and if you pardon the espression "Socialy retarted". Trivia: Francais was in the same class in secondary school, as Paul Dillion. Paul was UCD's SU President last year. Its TRUE

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,280 ✭✭✭regi

TDs get €100,000 on average now, with another 67 grand in claimable expenses (usually the spouse's salary!).

Its not bad money, but the trick was always to get a nice high public profile and park your non-executive ass on a few corporate boards and perhaps a few public speaking tours.

Paul was UCDSU president the year before last, and while i'd love to speculate about a secondary school putting something into the water to breed up power hungry individuals they're both (in any dealings i've had with them) very nice guys who i believe would fall into the 'want to make things better for students' category.

Anyway, Paul's so far left of Francis that were he thinking of attending their 10 year school reunion he'd have to start travelling now so they could meet somehere in the middle. And, i'm not saying that Francis is mega mega right guy - it's just that Paul's v left.

I didn't vote in the class rep elections. Not because of apathy, but because I didn't have a clue who any of them are. There were no speeches, no introductions, no nothing. I refuse to vote just for the sake of voting. Shame on whoever wins the JF Engineering place, as they do not deserve it.

I don't know Cuckoo about Paul's leanibg to the farLeft. I think its all a front and More a case of enlightened SELF INTREST. Take his point on collage fees. What would someone from a meath Land Owning family know about extreme poverty and familys who cant afford to send kids to school never mind collage. Collage Fees were a perfectly resonable idea, Once a resonable roof for Income was set. Also bear in mind collage fees were going to be TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

With that said Paul is a lot more approcable then FRANKIE. You right DEFFO NOT A Meath accent. More a case of the "TRINITY WEST BRIT SYNDROME" Ive aslways thouht the Frankie had Fasict leanings

Nope, when I booked the 29th aaaaages ago, I didn't realise that it was a bank holiday. I thought I'd just run with it, but lots of apologies have been given, so I'm shifting it to Tuesday, and hopefully Council on Thursday. I'll be sending out emails tonight, and texting people tonight and/or tomorrow.

EduMyth dragged me in (screaming and kicking) to assist with said training. And it was lots of fun! Although, I noticed the presence of quite a few Boards regulars...could there be a takeover on the way? Referenda to require the use of witty and amusing sigs on class rep emails? Motions in support of the Date Crash (TM) campaign? All SU officers required to state 'what are you listening to and what are you bitching about?' before making speeches?

Oh, thanks for reminding me. Elected officers renamed as 'moderators'. Bad class reps aren't struck off, but 'banned'. Oh, and if Council goes on for too long, it gets locked. (Hmm, that can be read in a few different ways)
