A Matt Furey idea with a irish guy called Dermot McGrath, a quote from page

"In addition to having the largest school in all of Ireland, I am the man who introduced Mixed Martial Arts over here several years ago when I ran the first Irish Vale Tudo Open. Three of my students entered that competition - and all of them won national titles"

    anyone know of him?

Never heard of him. But Furey is a superb salesman, I'll give him that. It all sounds a little river dance Irish to me.

Kinda like that guy trying to sll Oirish Stick Foightin. Who was Canadian........

    Jaaaayyyssssuuusssss!!!

Matt Furey would get up and say Mass!

I got some of his stuff and his internet marketing program.

Well tuned in our Matt is. he takes alot of stuff, repacks it and sells on at quite higher prices.

Irish American fight fans will buy this like hot cakes!!!!

Wonder what he actually got on the DVD... do not feel like parting with 99 bucks today.

    Man...this says it all.

yes matt has his marketing down....find a group who are scared and paranoid...fill them full of more fear....promise quick solution which requires no work ("you'll laugh when you see how easy it is")....watch the dollars roll in....

He (Dermot McGrath) rang me a couple times in relation to the MMA League before it got going with a load of rules questions, but none of his guys materialized then or since. Is he still teaching does anyone know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 412 ✭✭Ger Healy

Yea Mark found out more about him, still teaching in limerick city. kickboxing I think.

Seriously this is a joke right? I took the following from the site, and I put my answers in :)

    # How to smash someone's teeth in with a slight variation of a jab!
Whilst holding a baseball bat or brick

    # How a quick and dirty head butt can shatter someone's face!
Works wonders if you have an abnormally large head

    # How to make someone's eyes water so he can't defend against or see your next devastating blow!
Let me guess, punch them in the nose?

    # How a simple twist can split someone's nose wide open!
This a variation of the "got your nose" game parents play with babies?

    # How to hit someone in the soft places so you never hurt your hand!
    The groin - natures playground

    # How to make someone miss all the soft targets on your body; he'll end up breaking his hands when he hits the wrong spots!
Shield your balls, so they can smack you somewhere else

    # The sweet science of disguising all your illegal shots so that they look totally legit and above-board!
Because in your next street fight, the referee might stop you for a low blow

    # How to beat through a rope-a-dope defense - even breaking your foe's arms with this sneaky tactic!
    Ah reliable baseball bat!

    # How to conservere your energy with powerful shots that get the job done quick!
Get someone else to fight for you

    # How to fight from a clinch ... including secrets of "invisible" low blows!
By using my patented invisible spray

    # How to hit someone on the ground to finish him off quick!
Make sure opponent is on the ground, kick once then run away - cause chances are they also know the "big secret"

    # How to break free from a headlock and clobber your opponent in seconds!
Clobber? WHy do I need to dress my opponent?

    # How to punch so hard that you break ribs!
I can break ribs, especially when they are covered in a fine BBQ sauce and have been cooked for a while - no punches required

    # Unreal way to make your enemy break his own ankle when he attacks!
Pretend he's a high school cheerleader in a slasher film and chase him around for a while

I hazzard an educated guess that this is from Crazy Monkey or Dirty Boxing...SBG Rodney King???

....and CM is a slight variation on a very old Thai style of destructive blocking

    nothing new under the sun:D

    Ah John...interesting.

and CM works very well too, we do some serious FC drills, from the verbals to unexpected attack, and is a great tool to have. Naturally, I aint hang out doing the CM for ever, but CM and attack....Brilliant!

Dermot Mcgrath runs a "pankration" and kickboxing club in limerick. I have rolled with one of his students, and it seems to be a kind of catch wrestling style that he teaches, but it seems to be pretty basic (I rolled with his student, not him so I don't know what he's like personally).

I found that some of the basics of the ground game that i would take for granted( like keeping a knee or hand against an opponents hip in side control to prevent him regaining guard) were new concepts to him, and he's been training for 6 or 7 years

Not trying to talk sh1t about anybody here, just sayin' what i know :)

I could have swore there was a few people from 'pankration kickboxing' at the first round of the mma league this year. That the same club?

I've one lad who does some training with us who said he used to train with Dermot McGrath, don't know for how long though.

The answer to that, and many other questions, can be found on the MMA League: Genesis DVD, priced very reasonably at €18.95.

    Available from: http://www.mmaleague.com/

Seems like some guy trying to market something he knows nothing about to me
First off he markets it to the U.S. and real irish bare knuckle boxing was illegalized here a long ass time ago my grampa (Irish borne and raised moved to the us at 25) used to do underground matches and he's like 83 so it's been illegal for a wile my uncle taught me alot about all of it and it seems way different then the few video clips I've Found of this guy

i saw a clip of him (think it was him) talking about a knuckle to knuckle straight on punch bringing the top of your knuckle down lower to "break the Knuckles" on the other guy which is retarded. There is a move close but it's more like a downward hook angling the top of your knuckles forward and trying to aim for the fingers on the fist which does not break knuckles but fingers and usually only bruises bones it's to hard to aim acuratly at an incoming fist to do it the way he says and there's not enough power and would most likely end up hurting both of you
the way my uncle showed me evan if it ****s up you still deflect the punch and make him think twice about swinging at you or stun him long enough to **** him up
so basically i think it's just a way to make 100$ off people in the us who want to be Irish

Funny thing is that bare knuckle boxing or mma actually has less incidence of injury as the gloves help you to hit harder without injury-this lad is funny though!!

Rush Boxing club and Rush Martial Arts head coach.

"I quickly moved out of the way faster than I have ever moved in my life. It wasn't so much the caveman swings he was still trying to throw as the spraying blood I wanted to avoid. God knows what germs would be floating around in his veins. Some of them might even have been communicable to humans. So the ref did us both a favor when he dragged him back to his corner and stopped the session."

It's all a bit sensational for my liking.

Wasn't there some taekwondo guy a while back saying he introduced grappling to Ireland?

I'd say start at the end of Camden Street and then work your way North...

    what is pankration ?

Pankration was an Olympic event years ago. Pankration could be considered the forefather to MMA. It was for all intents and purposes MMA. The sport was eventually broken up into stand up only [Boxing] and grappling only [greco Roman wrestling]

Jim Arvanitis claims to have revived Pankration back in the States. he basically trained like any other MMA'er slapped the Pankration name on it introduced some wacky titles and is claiming to be the authority figure in Pankration and nobody besides him or his associates can use the term Pankration [Basically he's Bart Vale with an afro]

The Olympic Commitee was trying to revive Pankration for the Olympics when it was in Greece but he threw a temper tantrum when he was't asked to be involved. Two of the Coaches to be involved were Ken Shamrock and Keith Hackney [I believe Matt Hume was involved as well because he calls his gym AMC Pankration]
