Tut-tut, you shouldn't be downloading porn.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭Mystic Fibrosis

well that depends. If you're stupid they'll probably catch you, but if it's not mad warez they probably won't care but would warn you for wasting their bandwidth or something. Unless you SSH tunnel out of campus or something.

I haven't a clue, but imo i'd say you should chance it as they'll prob only give u a warning first time. Could be wrong. 1.3 gig a day is excessive though. Maybe u could ask what your bandwith usage allowance is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

eh - there is none. seeing as in a day i've downloaded over 6 gigs on it while sitting in lectures (no better way to waste time than downloading random crap in a lecture) so as long as its legal, they could care less - especially seeing as Trinity is on HEAnet, which is like huge mother**** backbone :)

To momentarily hijack this thread, a few questions for those more computer literate than I:

-How do I run msn messenger over this network, and if it's impossible, is there a good alternative?
    -Why won't windows update work?
-Does using the http://www.tcd.ie/proxy.cgi script to configure the proxy settings slow down my connection? Would I be better off filling in all the DNS/whatever details manually?
-Why is my internet connection so damn slow? This is meant to be 100mb/s damnit!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭Mystic Fibrosis

    1) Jabber. Check the netsoc site for more info on it.
    2) Proabably because either you have a mad warez version of windows, or maybe ISS block it for some reason.
3)I can't think of a reason why it would tbh...
4)Because you're not the only person on campus :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

1)msn messenger can be set up to run through your http proxy - check the settings.

2)windows update should work - works for me i think - though i didnt have to fill in any settings so i dont quite know how.

3)i'd fill in the proxy settings by hand personally - simply cus every now and then firefox goes anal over proxy config scripts.

4)try downloading a large file off HEAnet and tell me what your dl speed is?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 728 ✭✭✭randomfella

    4) Its Ireland, its never the speed they say it is! I've noticed a speed up in broadband from downloading on Limewire anyway. I feel that companies such as Eircom and BT have ripped off people since broadband existed, claiming it was broadband, Yeah Right!! *end rant.

Thank you for the fast replies, now that's what I call service!

My version of windows is perfectly legal, and as is turns out, my updates are downloading, albeit veeeeery sloooooowwwly.
3)i'd fill in the proxy settings by hand personally - simply cus every now and then firefox goes anal over proxy config scripts.

Where would I find said information?
1)msn messenger can be set up to run through your http proxy - check the settings.

I have internet explorer setup solely for msn's benefit, but it still won't work..it keeps telling me my proxy is invalid or offline. pssh.

If you are "Lost" then it's probably illegal, pssh. That's a bad fresher!

Well, they could go "hrmmm, he's a file that says "myst-divx-lost-ep2x03.avi" - that this guy Sandals just downloaded - hrmmm wonder why our system flagged that....

    :P

He's not messing with you. If you're downloading copyrighted material without paying for it (like episodes of Lost, Family Guy, etc.) or loads of dodgy porn or pirated software and they check your details then I expect you will get a call from them. Whether you are disconnected or not from the network is up to how well you can explain yourself but tbh I think it's unlikely. They'll probably give you a warning and let you off.

    really?

    Really.

You don't mind me asking, what were you downloading that has you so worried now?

I'd steer clear of that in future if I were you. They don't go through everyone's histories everyday but if they do have some sort of flagging system then I'd be wary of downloading it on the network.

    ok thanks for advice.

    1) Posting about this on the public TCD forum... probably not the smartest thing ever.

    2) If you really want the stuff, I'm fairly willing to bet that theres people banging around in college with such stuff on CD's and caddys and whatnot, you just need to know where to look.

o and the college don't go through everyone's history, but they do have lovely graphs for things like this :) which have detailed outputs... so if yer doing enough they'll notice, or if they are just bored some day......

    Also
    4) Its Ireland, its never the speed they say it is! I've noticed a speed up in broadband from downloading on Limewire anyway. I feel that companies such as Eircom and BT have ripped off people since broadband existed, claiming it was broadband, Yeah Right!! *end rant.
that has so nothing to do with this, trinity's connection is nothing like residential broad band..........

also pet its probally you are using the web in some part of the network which is far from the gige backbone and is highly congested. I think all the 10mbit parts have been removed now, though not everywhere is close to the gige backbone...if yer near that ye should get close on the 100mbit. (i've never seen the college max out its link....)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 605 ✭✭✭exiztone

Would I be allowed to use the connection to download Linux distro ISOs? They're perfectly legal, just pretty big.

yeah no one minds that at all.............. use the heanet mirror if ye want decent speed (i've gotten about 13mb/sec off it)

    I'm curious:

Why do most of sandal's previous posts have the messages removed and the letter x inserted? Is this to remove the incriminating evidence?

Well my flatmate, using his laptop on the same connection port, was getting full speed. I messed around with my network card settings, and by enabling something called PCI bus efficiency, I was able to boost the speed significantly. Stuff seems to download at about 1mb/s, is this good or bad? (I know it's good, coming from dialup it's amazing, but if there's a 100mb/s connection..)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

emm its ok, its not very good, but thats probally more dependant on the source of the files than the tcd connection i'd say...

and its possible your laptop wasn't negotiating full duplex, that can have some odd slow downs and ping problems.............

Okay, have you got a good source where I can test the speed? Perhaps a file that's hosted on HEAnet? I was using files from this site (which is perfectly legal by the way, SP were pro-taping of concerts).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

that would be a crap test site, ftp.heanet.ie get something off there...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭nosmo

Just a little note: Many porn sites are tagged, and odds are you will be in quickly-heating-up water within a week if you're lucky enough to visit a dodgy one. As for downloading, I'd say the college has more than one half-decent IDS that will report when a machine is downloading excessive amounts (I'm guessing it'd have to be a fairly massive amount though). Uploading will get you noticed MUCH faster, if you find a way to do it with your protocol of choice.

As for MSN: web1.tcd.ie port 8001 with your proxy username and password. I'm not sure about the MS MSN client, but with GAIM I was able to specify "use HTTP method"

Yay! It works! Thank you crash, nosmo and mystic fibrosis, I owe you all beer next time I see you.

HEAnet speeds should be anywhere between one and three megs for a dl

actually proxy1 instead of web1 - seeing as web1 doesnt exist like :P

one and 3? seems low... usually at least 4/5 for me on 100mbit , on gige sections have gotten considerbly higher :)
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for 'KNOPPIX_V4.0.2CD-2005-09-23-EN.iso' (728190976 bytes).
    100% |***********************************************************************************************| 694 MB 00:00 ETA
    226 Transfer complete.
    728190976 bytes received in 47.57 seconds (14.60 MB/s)

    web1.tcd.ie = proxy1.tcd.ie
    proxy1 is a CNAME to web1

(if your doing transfers and care if they are fast its worth cycling through the proxy servers...some maybe more loaded than others...)
    though also proxy2 = proxy3 :)

Which in turn leads to unix14 afair. or something with unix and a 4 in it

    no, proxy2 and 3 are CNAME's for unix14

web1 has its own A record
