Are you the same on Boards.ie and in real life?

I was wondering if people have the same personality on boards.ie as they do in real life. Some posters here are very helpful and informative, and others are very funny. Others have thier own "unique" characteristics too!!! So are you the same in real life as on boards.ie?

My opinions are usually the same.Everybody gets a different impression of somebody from their posts and you can't ask 'are you the same in RL or are you what peoiple think of you?'
I am honest on here and in RL,that's about it-honesty,beliefs.The rest may or may be completely inaccurate or accurate depending on how somebody percieves you.You may think you hate somebody on here but if you meet them you might think they are great.Happened more than once for me,I thought they were bastards....

Well, on boards Tar is a lesbian, and in the outside world he's a heterosexual man. I think that tells ya all you need to know...

To answer the OP, yeah, I think I'm pretty much the same - except off-boards I'm much more shy and avoid confrontations as much as possible, whereas on boards I get in more arguments. That's the whole point of boards, isn't it? Debating points of view. Generally I tend to agree for the sake of it off-boards, which may seem cowardly because it is. Meh.

yes and no. Work, no. Personall life yeah, depends though

not really as i dont tend to talk about meaningless junk as i do on internet boards.
lol. only messing but ya i suppose i am the same

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

pretty much, except that in the real world i can explain myself a lot better.
on boards, i tend to be very to the point, whcih a lot of people dont like.
in reality, i can usually explain my self better without resporting to being too blunt.

but then again, its also becuase im lazy and cant be arsed to type.

    Opinions are the same.

As to how I act, I don't think the question can be answered. You are after all only reading text from this forum and not seeing facial and body language which is a crucial aspect on which to judge someone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,217 ✭✭✭Matthewthebig

i'm louder and more obnoxious in real life

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,640 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Nah. I'm nice in the real world. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,561 ✭✭✭Rhyme

'Bout the same i guess... i talk more when prompted in real life

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,644 ✭✭✭✭nesf

It depends on what exactly you are asking. On here people are limited to text, no body language etc etc.

I've found over the years that occasionally I meet a person who I absolutely detest online. Whose posts/emails/whatever just annoy or get me angry. When I meet them in real life, they occasionally turn out to be a very agreeable person who I actually get on well with.

I do think that there is a huge difference between online and offline personalities. People both treat and see you differently in each in my experience.

As for opinions etc, they pretty much are the same in real life as they are on here. But at the same time, there is quite a difference between what I'd say in both. There are sides to my personality that don't show up on here. I'd presume that it is the same for most people on here.

    STFU!

Why does everyone refer to what you do off boards as "real life" or "the real world" - last time I checked this was all part of a VERY real world.....

no I'm a sweet little Pop-Tart, who loves everything pink and fluffy. This is all a facade(!)

Of course I'm the same. What a silly question to ask. I'd be screwed otherwise, if I ever met any of you people!

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

I'm actually a Bishop, and I'll be hearing confessions in Mulligans next Friday night... :D

Really? The same - except I don't talk to strangers in real life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Oh jesus no, I'm an asshole in real life ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

I'm far more argumentative on boards that I am in real life. My views and opinions would be quite similar but they'd be a lot less brash and it'd take quite a lot to send me off on one of my Sleepy-style rants off-line.

nesf makes a good point about meeting people that you detest on-line but who's company you actually enjoy in real life. I remember a guy called Rez on sin.ie who seemed like the most arrogant prick you could ever come across but who was an absolutely lovely chap in real life.

I've had similar things said to me at boards.ie beers and it actually struck home quite a bit at the time, I think I've a blog entry about it somewhere actually...

At the same time, while Sleepy was supposed to be my first attempt at just being "myself" on-line (my previous online personas had been either caricatures of myself or complete alter-egos) he has taken on something of a life of his own...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,417 ✭✭✭Miguel_Sanchez

    I think I'm the same.

    Probably prettier on boards though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 932 ✭✭✭yossarin

    I'm much more concise online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,187 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

    Depends.

But I'm sure many people over the years would have liked to known the 'real' me.

    That's a little creepy, Sleepy.

I have no idea how I am in real life, as I have very little contact with humons as it is, and I certainly don't talk about... well, anything remotely interesting with the ones I do meet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

Hmmm...Now that I think about it the person I am online(Pighead) and the person I am in real life(Sheepface) are quite different from one another.Well not that different actually ...Pighead is more talkative and open than Sheepface....Sheepface is very quite, kind of antisocial, and only talks to a few people ever.Sheepface appears to others as a very mysterious person who you should stay away from because he is crazy ...and Pighead is just really open to anything and has a terrible tendency to annoy people.I guess the question is which one is the real me?Perhaps I am a mix between the two of them.....I am Pigface or should that be Sheephead?
Apart from that I would say I am exactly the same online and offline.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,730 ✭✭✭✭simu

I am shyer and less condescending irl. However, the opinions I express online are those I hold in reality unless I'm trolling (which should be obvious)!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,648 ✭✭✭jezza

Nope..Im pretty much the same..I can wreck heads either way..although people have said that i have a "personality" when they get to know me and not the "lost cause" they chat to or read posts posted by moi!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,145 ✭✭✭DonkeyStyle \o/

    Dunno really.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭Rozie

Gods no. Online and offline are totally different. Online is far too full of people not giving a **** about anyone else, thinking it's their divine right to do so and makes them more mature for being that way, failing to realise it disrupts any kind of social atmosphere.

Though I'll still bite back at people who are asshats to me. Generally I find people don't give me the kind of **** to my face that I often get online, so it's not as big a problem.

Offline I'm a slightly hyperactive, cheery, slightly bipolar crazy pudgy fairy who skips and jumps and runs a lot.

ummm pretty much yeah... altough i am better lookin in real life! all opinions are the same, jokes are still just as bad. i'm a bit more sarcastic in RL though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 442 ✭✭arctic lemur

I'm pretty much the same like!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,633 ✭✭✭stormkeeper

I'd say I'm more shy in real life... I dunno if anyone who met me at a Boards Beers or another way care to mention anything that's different about me?

But you're not prepared to open up until you find the girl that you truly love and want to spend the rest of your life with? And you ask to kiss them and they look like they're going to, like, die of focking happiness.

    High fives all-round...

People always ask me, roysh, how did I get this cool? Not being big-headed or anything, but they genuinely want to know how it is that I pretty much have it all - Dead Eye Dick with a rugby ball and the stor of the school team, good-looking, amazing body, big-time chormer, great with the ladies and absolutely loaded.

Sparky seems the same in real life as he does on boards except for the fact he looks about 12 :p:D

I like to think i'm fairly the same - i can be a lot more outspoken in real life though because it doesnt take as long to say something as type it. :)

I'm also a bit more sick minded in real life, i heard somewhere boards frowns upon that sort of thing online .....
