Wtf? Go ask your f**king tutors like the rest of us.

The rest of us? Hold on, did you forget about these threads which appeared on the UCD Boards:

    "Accessing gmail with thunderbird"

    "MSN messenger"

"Anyone else notice this?" (which was to do with computers)

    "Laptop advice"

Oh I see. Now YOU'RE implying things, in this instance that I'm the only person to bring up a technical query on this forum. Good man yourself. Have a star...and a pint as well why not.
    SebtheBum wrote:
Jesus christ. You want to be hand-held through college by boards? Wtf is wrong with you?

Not at all. I asked for some friendly advice which I received thankfully. You get your knickers in a twist over the contents of a private forum? WTF is wrong with YOU? Angry about being banned are you? I can't imagine why you were banned by the way seeing as you conduct yourself in such a polite manner (cough).
    SebtheBum wrote:
Zane posted that thread because there was NOWHERE ELSE he could go.

Someone could just as easily have told Zane that his 'sh*t' had nothing to do with the forum and that he should stop expecting to have his hand held and just talk to a UCD counsellor. The fact you don't see the parallels between the two situations suggests it's YOU who needs to remove the blinkers.
    SebtheBum wrote:
Nobody else he could talk to within the college about it (with the possible exception of UCDSU.net, and that's hack-central). Put simply, we were the only ppl he could talk to about it, and to find out if we had similar experiences to his. Which we did.

Nobody to talk to in the college? Not even the counsellors? He had people to talk to but he chose to talk to the people here and we were all kind enough to give him advice. Back then I don't recall people starting threads to p*ss, groan and complain about other threads like his one. If we did, he probably would have thought twice about posting at all. I'm glad he did. I welcome people who need advice on things to do with their life as a student in the college. If I see a thread I don't like, I don't click on it. Simple as that.
    SebtheBum wrote:
Word count? Cover sheets? Huh? What possible analogy can you draw between them and Zane's thread?

    Honestly, I'd like to know.

    Then read the above.

It's worth pointing out Zane's own comments on this matter:
If the lack of ''exciting'' threads annoys you that much why don't you come up with an idea for an intellectually stimulating thread yourself instead of criticising other people's threads?

    As well as:
You are criticising people for coming onto this forum asking for advice from fellow students about VITALLY IMPORTANT aspects of their college life. Knowledge and advice from your fellow students whether you know them or not is absolutely priceless. I've got alot of great advice from people on this forum on an array of matters which has helped me greatly. Saying that threads like those aren't wanted sets out a bad precident from this forum. Threads like those I find far more interesting and stimulating than the likes of ''what's your favourite bar'' etc.

    Hear, hear!

Calm down people! :) I think it's important that the UCD board can be used by students who want clarification on something in their course.
It's the only resource available (except for classmates) at this time at night if you need something sorted right away (had a test the next morning or an essay or report due in or something), and if there's a chance that posting the problem here might help, then why not?

wow this place is kinda hostile at the moment...
thank god i'm not a sensitive fresher in need of advice......o wait i am...

I dont think these spam [opinion varies] threads really adversely affect you except perhaps by p1ssing you off! whereas for others its a valuable information resource [especially if like me you find most UCD auuthorites go out of their way to be most UNhelpful]

ouch man kinda harsh... I dont think thats a fair comment .for some people its just easier to ask q's here. [i mean both physically and mentally if ya get me]

tbh the quality of topics and volume of posts on this forum is somewhat lacking when compared with the TCD forum.

Now Im a UCD student and yes, I dispise and begrudge trinners :), but I think the only reason we asked for this forum is because trinnity got one, but unlike the trinners, we dont really use it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

well a quick look at the TCD forum shows plenty of laptop, registration, locker questions..... jsut like the ucd one.

I cant believe this has been made a sticky. Just going to throw a few points out there. No one ever reads my stuff so whatever.

    1) MNG has a very good point. This is a UCD forum. Can somone please give the discription of a forum and what should be discussed in it. I query here and I have been given some good advice.

2)Non-Freshers. If your UCD forum has been boring of late try and spice it up rather than attack threads that don't interest you.

I had a conversation with Happy Crack Head today about this. Freshers are not as confident in UCD as they have only been there for 4 weeks. Boards provides valuable help for questions that may seem trivial to you fantastic 2nd and 3rd years with established friends and routines.

Everyone cool their jets and lets all just get along. No need to make this personal.

    PS Defeististise yourself Sebastian.

Would anyone be interested in a UCD Wiki (like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page only UCD based).

I haven't looked into it but I'm sure I could set one up on Nerdsoc.

Skeb , if it wasnt for yourself, Kev and Bloomer Multiseed patiently answering all my dumb ass questions I probably would have dropped out somewhere into my 3rd day.

Can you identify the boardsies and the fresher who asked a stupid question?

    Already is a UCD Wiki @ www.boards.ie/wiki

I stickied it because I'd like to see what exactly folks want out of this board.
This thread seems to be getting a few opinions out on that.

Its a UCD board. It should be about anything UCD to the people in UCD, be that the worthless network, course requirements, a need for advice, or what your favourite pub is. But then again, that would make logical sense! ;):)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,221 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

UCD should be anything, at all, to do with UCD.
If you can bring it up with friends you should be able to bring it up here.
The board isn't busy enough to start being anal about topics.

So in conclusion, to those getting worked up by a forum on the internet and its 'quality' of threads....get a fúcking life.

Edit: Seems like Einstesamnfask;fsaass knows the score and posted first.

Can understand where peachypants is coming from-threads arent as exciting as last year but tis up to us to change that i spose-like why has no one started a thread bout how hot dan the welfare officer is goddammit!!!but i spose for ickle first years its good having the threads bout computer things and such cos it is sorta tough making that transition from school to uni so everylittle bit helps!

Pretty much everyone else disagrees. That's roughly the state of the thread at this point.

Nice one Truckle for stickyin the thread tbh...

Seeing as Blackboard is on your computer screen, it would probably be quite appropiate to ask the people on your computer screen about it. Who is somebody that has gone home for the weekend to ask about blackboard or whatever, especially at the very start of college when there is a very good chance they might not know anyone. Making such a big fuss over someone's problem or question isn't going to get you anywhere and I'd very much like to see your reaction if any of your threads got such an (in my opinion) out of line reaction.

Ok lads, just to clarify something. At no point whatsoever in ANY of my posts did i mention the words "boring" or "interesting"

I didn't start this thread because other threads have not been up to my "standards" or whatever

I was merely saying that there are certain things that would be better dealt with in the relevant departments as thats where the official answers would come from. How can any of us tell a student how long their essay has to be? Thats something only a tutor or lecturer or department administrator can answer.

Also, when i said exam results could be dealt with elsewhere I was being pretty vague (due to running out the door for work). Obviously exam results are an important issue and should be discussed here. However, I can't see the justification for not one but TWO threads (in the space of about a week) on the fact that exam results online are presented as provisional and was the OP going to be marked down!!!

Anyway, I stated my opinion and obviously didn't expect everyone to agree....I think the title of the thread suggests as much. And MNG, at no point did i suggest "censoring those that dont agree" You assume far too much, but thank you for brightening my day....yet again. :)

Some people seem to have taken it personally and some have said that I shouldnt have pointed out specific threads. All I will say to that is, if I hadn't given examples I would have gotten just as agressive a response for not being specific

At the end of the day lads, it was merely an opinion. People have read into what they like and thats fair enough. I have never said I find the forum boring, I just think that some threads are issues that would be much better dealt with (and most likely much quicker) elsewhere.

    But, ya know....whatever. :p

People are often in the same courses, y'know! And might have the same tutor. Or maybe there's a set number of words for college essays, or for first year essays, that uneducated people like myself are ignorant of. It's really not a big deal to help if you can, or leave the thread if you can't.

In many cases Dave, the essay lengths can be different depending on course/subjects. Some of mine are 2,000 words and some are 1,500. And yes, you're right, some people are in the same courses. However, in the length of time it could take for a response from a boardsie who just *might* happen to be doing the same subject in the same year, surely one could contact a lecturer/tutor/admin?
Besides, nearly all tutors give out their email addresses in their first tutorial. At least that response would be an official one.

Anyway, it was merely an opinion. The FAQ stickies are a fantastic idea and will hopefully do some good.

Well said Dave. Peachypants would do well to check out the Trinity forum because, as someone already said, that forum has plenty of people who post queries as well.

I think this forum is an excellent resource for UCD students and I think it is moderated very well indeed and I would hate for things to go down the route of censorship.

If people don't like the thread they see before them, don't click on it. Simple. As the saying goes, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

Ok I contributed to this post at the start to agree with peachypants and since then have just been keeping an eye on what’s been said, the thread was very necessary I had created a similar one (not as controversial) stating how quiet the UCD board was this year compared to last year, there was no need for some people 1 in particular to fly off the handle as I would imagine that peachy was just taking his thread as a general example and not some sort of personal attack (because as we all know that is against the rules). I still firmly agree with the original post in question, now before anyone gets their knickers in a twist im only taking this as a general example seen as its been so hotly debated, but if u are really that concerned about how to locate your word count then consult your manual where u are going to get the right answer, who knows who is giving advice on boards it may be total BS or it may be true. Also that post in particular should have moved to a computer thread, it in itself has nothing to do with UCD socially academically or otherwise. If I posted a thread here about how I was having trouble accessing the internet in college because my wireless card was on the blink then im sure it would be moved because it is irrelevant to college life in itself. Taken from the charter:
    uberwolf wrote:

Anyway im not intending on pissing anyone off but no doubt someone will have something to say!!! (They always do)
    And again
Here here to PP for bringing the issue up in the first place!!

I disagree to some extent. The problem could be due to incorrect settings which only a UCD head would know. So better suited to the UCD forum imho.
