    what's the catch?

if you get 6 numbers, do they pay out less than the lotto jackpot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,306 ✭✭✭blahblah06

    odds for the bookies are

    5 numbers 50000/1
    4 numbers 4500/1
    3 numbers 475/1
    2 numbers 50/1
    1 number 11/2

I do my numbers out of 6 as u get better odds.

Is there a "lotto plus" or is it just based on the main draw?
I had 3 numbers and won nowt this weekend :(
Most I ever won was €200 having 5 numbers on a Lotto plus draw.

Crikey - screw lotto. I'm goin on the bookies from now on!

Actually, wait a min...just checked paddypower.
You have to predetermine how many number you think you'll get.
It's not like you pick your six and hope you'll get something - you have to decide to put money or 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.
think I'll hold off and hope I win a scratch card then spin the wheel...

My wife's gotten 5 numbers in the main draw 3 times now. She's either incredibly lucky and we're gonna live in luxury, or she's cursed. ;)

My preferred game is EuroMillions. I like it because the jackpot is huge and it feels like a political action -- a vote with my euros that I support the European Union.

In EuroMillions you pick five numbers from one to fifty and two numbers from one to nine. If you match all seven, fifty to 150 million euro. I don't pick my numbers though, for one of my rules regarding the lottery is "Pighead Do Not Fall Into A Pattern". I can imagine no worse financial tragedy than playing the same numbers every week and forgetting to buy a ticket or going on vacation when the "lucky" numbers come up.Jeekers i'd be distraught. There would probably even be tears.

I check the box that commands the computer to pick numbers for me when I buy a ticket and in doing so quite possibly save my sanity. I also estimate this gives me a mildly better chance of actually winning and not being forced to share the jackpot.
No offence lads but its a fact that if you pick your own numbers, Pighead has a better chance of winning than you do.While every sequence of numbers is equally likely to win, people are not equally likely to pick lots of consecutive numbers, 32, 33, 34, 35, for example -- but these are just as likely to win. A casual perusal of the National Lotto history shows that weeks where some of the numbers are consecutive are less likely to have jackpot winners, so the money rolls over to the next week. Also, many people use birthdays or anniversaries as lucky numbers, meaning that 31 and under are overrepresented. I also thing it's fair to guess that many people have 7 as one of their numbers, but not many people pick 13.
Pighead-Always one step ahead of the posse

Paper you shouldnt do quickpicks mate. the chances of them different numbers coming up is very slim. I would suggest you pick your own numbers and stick to them. use www.lotto.ie to see the most frequent numbers that are pulled out and how man times they came out

My other rule with regards to the lottery is Thou Shalt Not Buy A Lottery Ticket For Anyone Else Under Any Circumstances. Ever. I love my family and am fond of my friends, but certainly not fond enough to give them an opportunity at unknown riches that could otherwise be mine.I'd start weeping if i found out i'd bought the winning ticket for someone else.Shallow-Yes,Selfish-Of course,Wily old fox-indeed

I used to do the lotto, until I started playing poker and learning all about the the odds of a flush hitting, drawing to a straight etc....

In poker you play other players, so to a large extent your success is inyour own hands, with a slice of luck.
If the odds don't make sense, you don't call the bet.

Lotto is all luck. The odds don't make sense.

In the poker fraternity lotto is known as "a tax on stupidity".

do you play online, i wouldn't have a clue.

i'd just see the loto as a bit of fun, couple of quid a week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,047 ✭✭✭Culchie

    Yes I play on-line.

I was the same, a couple of quid a week for 10 years, never won more than a tenner or so.

    There's a poker forum here :)

Every combination of numbers has equal probability of coming out in each draw. It doesn't matter if you pick the same numbers every week, since the outcome of one draw has no effect on the outcome of any other draw, every combination is equiprobable in every draw.
Therefore you're just as likely to win with a quickpick.

Anyone who's done some statistics and the like in school/college knows this.

    Quite right.

You've as much chance of getting 1,2,3,4,5,6 as you do sticking to the same numbers each week.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

i do a quickpick whenever I can remember to do it but the bf does the same numbers-not for luck anything but just so he can remember them

Not big into the lotto but i would buy a Euro millions ticket now and again

Read somewhere that nearly 2000 people play 1,2,3,4,5,6. every draw. "Ah sure what other gob****e would play dose numbers, I'll have de jackpot all to meself!"

Well about 1999 other people mate! I believe this statistic because we have 3 regular lotto players in our shop alone that play that string of numbers.

The irony is that because the jackpot prize fund is ring-fenced from the prize pool for the rest of the winning combinations, eg 10% of the lotto takings might go to the charity fund, 5% of the takings for administration and wages etc 5% to the retailers 40% of the takings is allocated to the Jackpot and the other 40% of the takings is split amongst the match 3,4,5+ bonus etc

Because of this, depending on the size of the jackpot each of those 2000 jackpot winners may come out with less than someone who got only 5 numbers!! :D

Do it the odd time when the Euromillions jackpot is huge. Anyone notice that the Irish lotto ajckpot has rolled over a lot more lately? I feel like a conspiracy nut saying this, but you'd swear it was rigged.

The catch is that the bookies don't pay out half the money to good causes. To me, it's a bit of a cheat to be going to the bookies.

I write a little java program for my own "quickpick".

There's 42 numbers, and 6 numbers per panel.
So you can use up all 42 numbers in 7 panels if you don't repeat them.

So I'm always guaranteed to have all the numbers... in 7 panels.... just not necessarily in the one !

There's absolutely no mathemathical advantage to this... just feels better :-)

    regards,
    Owen

Not sure if this is what you mean but one time I thought I won three or four numbers so I went to a shop to get it checked. The machine beeped and the guy said that I hadn't won but he kept hold of the ticket. I didn't quite trust the situation so I asked for the ticket back and took it elsewhere. I think I won 10 or 20 euros in actual fact.

if the machine beeps you lost if it stays silent you win.

then again if somone won the jackpot id tell them they won 250 euros a euro millions ticket and 16 euros .

if ur stupid enough to let somone else do it for you then you wont miss the money imo.

most ive won is 8056 euros

i do the lotto in work if its a really big lotto... we all put in a few schuroz and get quick picks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34 irishunion.com

I believe if you go to work, you'll "win" money every week. The wining it's called salary. There's no easy way to make yourself the next Bill Gates. And if you want to make easy money, don't gamble, whatever the odds are. Invest the money. There's loads a places you cand invest in. Shares, bonds etc....
1 euro and 50 cents for a quick pick + Lotto plus1 and lotto plus 2.
But you don't go for just a single one. minimum 3 euro (2 sets of 6 no).
I don't have anything to do with Tony Ryan or Ryan Air or the aviation industry. but i sugest you to buy shares in Ryan Air. It's ONE OF the fastest growing enterprise in ireland. Luck is not something you can buy or inherit. Do you know we all "MAKE OUR OWN LUCK?" By making good decisions, not by blowing the money on gambling. (Lotto = Gambling)
Do you like the buzz to find out if you are the winner?
Buy a share in Ryan Air and when you look at it you'll know you're winning.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭pbsuxok1znja4r

I don't play the lotto at all. The more you play the lotto, the more likely it becomes that you will only break even. Probably not even that.

I work in a shop and when we print tickets by accident that we don't get to sell, we are required to buy them ourselves, but I did it once and never bothered to buy it, so the next day another member of staff takes that ticket (without paying for it, I might add) and won €800 on it!
Didn't bother me in the least, though, 'cause I don't play the lotto as a rule.

It's imposible for me to have bothered you! I wrote on the board before you. The proof is on the net.
And you can play the Lotto for eternity and never win the JackPot. And if you study statistics you'll realise over 90% of Lotto players NEVER break even. That staff member that won 800euro was just lucky. And how many staff members in the whole world win money like that? Less than 10, i'd say
Do u work for The National Lottery? Or Paddy Power?

I don't normally do the lotto, but I did today. I've been having a streak of good luck recently.
