As a freher with no clue. Is there any point for me going in tomorrow? (Aprt from the wave rider).

Also do I get my Student Card when I register (Tuesday)?

I've looked everywhere for answers and had to ask here so don't say "why didn't you search???"

Oh yeah, societies, forgot about them.

Answer my second question anyway. What does registration involve/require/? Also the welcome pack isn't helpful in telling ppl where to go for reg, can someone clarify?

    Thank you.

What time should I go in also?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

registration takes two seconds, and its in the exam hall. well, not two seconds, but not very long. as for going in tomorrow, there is a reason. Freshers week. and free booze. and everything that goes along with said booze :D

*crosses fingers* will not have a repeat of monday last year, will not...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 518 ✭✭✭Bartronilic

Aw free booze, isn't that great? If you're 18 and they're allowed to give you free booze. What's the point of having fresher's week BEFORE lectures start. I don't get it. Uurgh.

I can't do anything though can I/ UNTIL I REGISTER?!!!!!!!!! Uuuuuuuuurgh

Freshers' week is for you to find your way around, meet lots of people and have fun. If it happened after term starts, you might have to choose between attending lectures and having fun - this way you get to do both in their own time.
I can't do anything though can I/ UNTIL I REGISTER?!!!!!!!!!
Sure you can. Turn up and join in whatever's going on that seems like it might be interesting or fun.

ah yes, because ALL the societies check your ID when they have receptions. of course. heh

As a "fresher", I want to know what all the good **** going on next week is, because I foolishly wasted away all my money this week, and I'm on a bit of a shoestring budget (I actually live with my parents, but they are too scabby to lend their poor malnourished, impoverished son any money), so I can't afford to go to all these events. So what's the really good ones that it be in my best intersts to attend???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 728 ✭✭✭randomfella

It says that u are required to attend the following:
    - Faculty meeting
    - Registration
    - Computing and Library Skills Training
    - Course Meeting
    - College Tutor
    - Campus and sport halls tours

I don't have to register till Tuesday. I don't think theres much going on, on the monday anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭ZWEI_VIER_ZWEI

Yeah, I'm just going in on Monday to meet my tutor and check out the campus and the likes...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Ilac

When you register you're given your Trinity e-mail address, which societies will ask you for when you join so you can be added to their mailing list. So don't join societies until you've registered, unless you don't plan on using your TCD address.

I found the library tour and computer workshop very useful.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭ZWEI_VIER_ZWEI

    Well that sucks..I don't regi-star until Thursday

(may aswell get the stupid questions out now)

This is college. You are not required to do anything =). Although you would be stupid not go to go to your registration and course meeting.

If you're going to do anything this week, register and SEE YOUR TUTOR!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭ZWEI_VIER_ZWEI

Yeah what's the story with the tutors?? I'm going in tomorrow to see mine, but why is it so important???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

if you have a good one it can be a great asset, i.e. if you fail they can help you sort out things, also its advice from someone who knows how the college works. Also they need to sign off on any course change application

...and since you don't know what will happen in the next 4 or so years of your life, it'd be better to meet your tutor as soon as you can, just in case anything happens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

computing/library and sports/campus tours are not necessary if you are a) computer literate and b)anyway smart. otherwise, go on em :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

well for most somewhat computer literate tho not nerds, the comp one is probally a good idea, if nothing else just so you see the layout of how tcd do things... active directory domain controller for ISS boxes, horde's imp webmail(i assume its still this?) , proxy details n so on.... --- though i'm not entirely sure what they teach in the introduction...

Personally i'd recommend going to all tours, more information you can gleam early on about everything on campus the better....

i would go on the library tour! i didnt end up going to the library until the last 2 months cause i didnt know what the procedure was! its really stupid when i look back!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

exactly, i've seen people who don't know how the call slips work after 3 years in tcd, never bothered asking anyone so i guess missed out on the facilitiy alltogether , certainly worth going to..

Someone answer this? I heard if you have your CAO number, which becomes your CAO number it's alright... Are the societies there everyday? I want free stuff!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

Yeah societies don't really demand a tcd email because otherwise nobody would sign up on Monday and everyone would be the lesser.

I know I registered knowing only my CAO- (now student-) number and knowing my address/date of birth etc but my friend says he was asked for ID.

Bring a bag to put all your free stuff in. And the tours aren't mandatory. Go on them if there's nothing else to do; but if you're chatting up some hot chick etc ignore them :D.

PS I'm drunk, and hiding from security in the Laser Huts. I was told there was gonna be a secret party until the morning of Freshers' Week, but it looks like I was ditched! Ah well, the internet and the other sole user in the Laser Huts will keep me happy.

Go join the people at the Chapel Mr. Banana, there's a small gathering at the chapel steps queuing for the spots for the societies...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

I was told non-residents are being kicked out. And I seem to have been stood up. Oh well. Thus is life.

OOOH I wasn't stood up, it just appears some colleagues are crap at texting back. What's EduMyth at?

I was putting some stuff on class reps on noticeboards around campus. Fascinating stuff really!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

    At this hour?!

Ah yeah. Sure why not? Might as well start early.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,382 ✭✭✭snorlax

just got free food off the christian union in house 6 and got free popcorn and candyfloss off the hist.
currently in aras an phiarsigh on the computors.

must say the su are very organised this year. i especially love the free skittles in the packs.

i tried to get free food off the phil aswell but unfortunetly some person i v never seen before in my life recognised i wasn't a fresher and sent me packing:(!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,945 ✭✭✭cuckoo

Go on the Students Union tour of the campus! At least, go on the ones i'll be giving tmw and thurs. Look for the caffeinated blonde person at the SU stand.

No, really, the tours are kind of handy for all the factoids you'll learn about the college.

And, all the 'stupid' questions you're afraid to ask here - go to the SU stand and someone there should know the answer.

i understand your smug giggles. if i was in your position, i would've laughed at me too.

Snorlax, are you doing Medicine or Radiation Therapy or OT or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

20 hours a week for me iirc. or is it 21...max 22 anyhow, depends on a few things like my BC timetable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,382 ✭✭✭snorlax

OT, and im really scared about going into 3rd year because it counts towards 30% towards my degree and it get's real serious this year.

30%? That's pretty high. Although at least there's less pressure in 4th year. I've got 90% of my degree to look forward to starting on Monday.

Maths JS is worth 50% (surprised serenity hasn't mentioned that yet)
Physics is 35%.. One of the reasons I don't feel so bad repeating

I don't know, it sounds a lot sweeter than 90% in one year.

i think alot of the arts faculty have it the same as me.

it was actually voted in by the the third years 2 years ago. it's a pity, because i would have prefered to enjoy college life a bit this year as i could be shipped off to Mayo or somewhere next year :(.

its only really good if u are aiming for the 2.2 region... anything more n ye have to do well both years instead of just one.....

us nursey types have 88 weeks of clinical placement over the four years (55 of them in year 3/4), in which we work three 13 hour shifts. it will be tough but worth it. we have to have 100% attendance at all tutorials and clinical placement or else we are not deemed competent to practice.
They cant allow you to take too much time off. a few years ago, someones mam died, and she got 1 day off, and if she took anymore she had to pay them back during the summer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭JackKelly

25 or so hours for me. I have a nice 4 hour break on thursdays before my 3 hours of labs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

Ick, 34 hours. But this time I can't say I didn't know what I was letting myself in for..

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 11,362 ✭✭✭✭Scarinae

I have 17 hours of actual lectures it would appear, but I have yet to find out how many labs and tutorials I am going to have

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

    Oh yeeeeeawww.. 10 hours!

Dont do labs anymore so I may as well be an arts student.

Well, cept that what I'm doing is really really hard and has a 50% failure rate!
