Are people less truthful today than they were, say, a generation ago?I'm finding more and more of my friends are lying to me.They lie often, and lie without remorse,Whats going on
Take my so-called-best-friend Pernel(I've changed his name to protect his identity). Lately, he has been lying to me a lot. He lies about the strangest things. He told me that he was in town on Sunday night and he picked up a stunning looking girl in Pravda. Now i know for a fact this isn't true. Firstly hes never been the best with the ladies and hes not getting any younger so to have suddenly developed a talent for picking up pretty young things sounds suspect.Secondly i was talking to his brother yesterday and it turns out Pernel stayed in on Sunday night to play the new Day of Defeat game.
I dont know why he would lie about that. Thats just one of the things he lies about. I mean, he lies a lot to everyone else, too. It seems he lies to his friends more than he tells the truth to them. And the things he lies about are really lame.
I know genuine friendship goes through trials that test the honesty and intimacy of friends. I know i should respond to the challenge lovingly and with sincere regard for him to overcome these obstacles. But theres only so much I can take. Surely i'm better off without someone who degrades you or diminishes your self-worth.
We have become a nation of liars. The politicians lie, journalists lie, corporate CEOs lie, and stockbrokers and other salesmen lie. Advertisers lie. Businesses lie. Priests and OJ simpson lie.
But Pighead surely a white lie is ok if it stops somebody getting hurt
    WRONG
Pighead thinks lying to spare someone's feelings is downright wrong, especially if it is someone who trusts you to be honest with them.
As the devil once said, don't ask the question if you don't want the answer.
The only time I think lying is okay is for surprises. Say Sarky wants to buy Pighead a present or discuss a surprise boards party for him, it is okay to tell Pighead that you are going to a friends place to watch the game or something like that. Things like that are,, okay to lie about.
Otherwise lying makes me want to vomit

Good lad, that wasn't too hard now was it
Le Rack, unfortunately people do not always find out the truth which is why lying is so tempting for so many. There are countless people out there who are walking the streets having lied through their teeth to save themselves going to prison. There are also countless relationships still on the go because one of the partners chose to lie about his/her infidelities to save themselves getting the elbow

I dont think I will ignore you because you kinda irritate me in a good way. In a good way I hear you say well I get the chance to back bite and be smart with you pighead.

Lying is bad and wrong and you will ALWAYS get found out eventually and it will always cause more problems if you lie instead of telling the truth straight away.Lying is WRONG! Oh if people were honest how easier things would become...

I'll put my hand up as another fan of Pighead's third person ramblings! :D

Pighead is completely spot on about the way lying dominates our lives. We live in a dog eat dog world out there and even if it's about something as trivial as ''I pulled a hot bird the other night'' some people feel that lying will get them further with people and gain more respect.

Sure we all lie about silly things now and again and exagerate but it's sad the way so many people will lie over anything just to get one up on someone.

About your mate Pighead. He may be lacking in confidence or feels inferior to the rest of your social network. If he starts lying about anything sinister then you should give him a porkchop!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

You're right spiderlegs but lets face it, in so many ways, we are all ... living a lie. We live many lies. We can condemn the Bertie and Haughey in such a way as to be just shy of stoning him outside the dail, but easily forget about the lies we tell to our bosses, spouses, children and friends.
    . . .
Lying and deception, including self-deception, are so common in Ireland, they are a part of everyday life.
The only part of society free from this charge are little children, it's refreshing, comical, (and often embarrassing) to hear them speak so honestly and forthright. Pighead wishes he was 7 again

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 771 ✭✭✭spiderlegs

Yes but those seven year old kids can be cruel. One told me I had hands like et.His mother claimed he was only stating that I had long fingers....I hope thats what that kid meant!
Little lies are ok I suppose but big ones are bad, and I just can't lie about big things to people...but then it just depends what kind of person you are.....everyone lies about things sometimes it just depends what you decide to lie about. As for your friend maybe he's just feelin' a little insecure of late....maybe I dunno.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,388 ✭✭✭Kernel

hahah.. ok... I'm going to say that your theory that this 'Pernel' cannot be correct, since Day of Defeat was only released on the 26th, so he couldn't have played it on Sunday.

    Ergo, *you* are lying Pighead.

I once scored a nice chick in Pravda, and went back to her place, while a mate of mine, let's call him Bighead, ended up in his strides in a jail cell with 2 other blokes for the night.

    True story people, true story.

I think Pighead's a tosser, but he's the amusing kind of tosser. Good in small doses, makes you want to commit hari-kiri with a dishcloth in large doses.

OT, I'd usually tell the truth, sometimes I lie as a first reaction, which is a pain in the hole.

Thanks buddy, that means a lot.As the great Voltaire once said "here are truths which are not for all men, nor for all times"
Anyway We are lied to about 200 times each day.
Most people lie to others once or twice a day and deceive about 30 people per week.
The average is 7 times per hour if you count all the times people lie to themselves.
We lie in 30 to 38% of all our interactions.
College students lie in 50% of conversations with their mothers.
((The numbers above are based partially on information from Pigheads Mother Father and sister and some of his flatmates and not the Bureau of Labor Statistics.)

But what's the difference between a little white lie and a normal lie? I mean really. It's all the same at the core, not truth. People call them white lies to make themselves feel better. They tell themselves the lie wasn't meant to hurt or even that it was a good thing, less painful for the person they're lying to, as if they're doing the person a favor. People lie to themselves all the time. A lie is a lie and I've told plenty, but I don't lie to myself.

To be honest I don't think that there is anyone that I know that I haven't lied to.:

Teachers:homework not done, test is for tomorrow not today etc.

Friends:What I think of their clothes hair etc

    Parents:Everything I do

    Boyfriend:small things cant remember

My life would be over if my parents found out even some very small things about my life

Okay Kernel, so everybody lies (apparently a lot), but it seems particularly shameful to lie so often that you're not even aware that you're lying. You'd think that the more you were aware of it, that the less you would do it. So in the interest of self-improvement, I was trying to consciously remember the last time I lied, which turned out to be this afternoon when I told you that you were one of my dearest friends and i really admired you. Reason for lying: sloth.

When I said I wasn't with your Girlfriend in Dundalk the other week... I admit.. I also told a lie... we checked into a hotel on a friday, and emerged from our room on Sunday.... I'm sorry man, it didn't mean anything. (well, not to me).

Some alternatives to lying are: changing the subject, answering a different question than the one asked, ignoring the question, or answering the question with a question. lying to agree with someone's vanity or self-deception, or their mis-conception, is also wrong even if that is what they want to hear.
    Gimme some truth

Great thing about lying is that if you tell the same lie enough then you start to believe it and therefore it's no longer a lie to you....... Like that time Johnny Depp's car broke down and it was poring rain. I heard a knock on the door (bell was broken) and when I opened it,there he was!

He kissed me roughly and threw me onto the couch. He tore off my clothes and his wet hair dripped onto my naked body. We made love through the night and then the AA came and off he went.

Kernel you're petty taunts shall be ignored by me in the future. These shall be my last utterances towards you

Wrong fusion94210.Good lies require good liars and you my crapply monikored friend are not a good liar. You see fuse, memory is the key. Remembering past lies is critical to being a good liar. From personal experience women never forget what you've told them and never lie to your mother. Usually a good lie works only once and diminishes in effectiveness every time its told thereafter. A good liar must be prepared to take a punch and you my friend are fearful of the punches.C'mon buddy those lies your spouting arent fooling nobody.

    Pighead,
I have to admit, sometimes I catch myself telling little fibs, and I disapoint myself. Although using fibs is so much more conveniant! but I shouldnt at all, should I? I'd never warp the truth to the extent that young Pernel would...Im not that insecure :p . But yeah, little fibs the odd time...only when Im put on the spot and usually over little things that arent very significant, but still, I dont like it all the same.

Help me be a better man!

OK I demand to know what the truth is with Pighead. Is he 'manned' by the likes of devore and regi etc to maintain interest in boards? Is he their pet project? A seemingly genius poster who we are supposed to think is a real person, but is in fact several, designed to keep us interested, amused and talking.
Without a doubt, Pighead is the best thing about boards. Tell us the truth, what's the conspiracy with Pighead? He's too much of an enigma to be just one person!

Keep loading on the appreciation and he's going to turn into another bubbles which would be quite annoying. Take it easy, there is no hype....your just a normal boardster aren't you pighead?

Third person talk is pretty crap tbh though over all, pighead you can be annoying but your ok!
