Tattoos do not have any adverse affects other than staining your skin. So not destroying your body

and on a more important note, who the fúck said tattoos were straight edge?

My sentiments exactly, straight-edge isn't something that's to be actually define-able, who gives a flying fúck if some one has a tattoo or not, the only thing in straight edge that matters is that you don't drink and you don't do drugs.

I'm straight edge myself but it's my own type of straight edge and not some stereotypical bull****.

its when you dont drink or do drugs, or smoke i suppose.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Cool, I'm glad they've given it a label now

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,095 ✭✭✭OLP

tbh i cant stand giving normal ordinary actions (for lack of a better word) a fecking label to make it special, then all the people who've been like that all their lives dunno whats happening and reject the labelisation, and there'll be a new bunch of people who follow these actions because they think it makes em special.

sorry 'bout the incoherent mini rant

Not at all, I'm with you on this. So tell me, what's the difference between this and being a catholic pioneer, apart from... well... the little badge the pioneers wear, I suppose?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,397 ✭✭✭ANarcho-Munk

FYI straight edge was founded in 1958 i think, or somewhere around that year.....

And yes, i too would be rightly pissed if some other cheeky straight edge git hassled me if i was drinking. There was actually a kid stabbed in America because he was smoking and some stupid straight edge kids killed him because of it.
So tell me, what's the difference between this and being a catholic pioneer, apart from... well... the little badge the pioneers wear, I suppose?

Well, most catholic pioneers aren't involved in punk music are they? ;)
But yes, in principle they are very a like.

isn't it kind of hard to avoid giving something a label?
In a hypthetical situation, say if you went into a shop and there were no labels on anything, wouldn't it just slightly confuse you as to what you are holding or dealing with?

theres a difference between labeling items for ease of distinction, and labeling people for distinction (or just to make themselfs feel falsely special)

What does it matter about what music they listen to? The only requirement to be a catholic pioneer is that you don't drink or do drugs. What are the requirements for being straight edge again...?

Now, would you like your pioneers badge yet?

I just dug this up a second ago from www.spontanious.com
It's an interview with John Stabb Schroeder of G.I, one of the leading bands in DC back in the 80's

That whole "straight edge" thing really exploded after minor threat gained popularity.
What are your views on SE? Were you then into that at all?
    John Stabb wrote:
Oh lord, here we go again. It's fine Minor Threat song. So many outside WDC have made it into something almost religious. Whatever. I hate the term because nobody seems to understand what Ian wrote the song about in the first place. It's just an "anti-obsession" song. But when people start becoming fascist about their so-called "Straightedge" stance, it becomes a false thing. I didn't drink or do drugs in the early punk scene because I felt I always had to be aware of things at a show. Hell, I was a space cadet half the time without that nonsense in my system. Jeff Nelson, Tom Lyle and some others in the scene drank beer and smoked pot. Big f'n deal. And everybody knew alcoholics and junkies in the band scene who we were still friends with. Sadly, Ian and I have lost a few friends to that ****. I don't like to see creative talents wasted. That said, there was one G.I. tour where all of us (thanks to the influence of a couple alcoholic girls we brought along) drank after the shows. But I'm such a lightweight that a bottle of Malt Duck was enough to have me sloshed. It was actually pretty foolish of us to get into the alcohol party on that tour but we were being immature punk rockers. Nowadays, I'm still a light drinker and enjoy a frozen strawberry daiquiri or Mike's Hard Lemonade once in a while. I've got alcoholic friends who still drink. I just don't want to see them become a statistic. And I refuse to let them drive drunk. One of my friends is gone because of that. I wish I could've helped to save him. He's the one I wrote "Teenager in a Box" and "Last Forever" about.

No, it sounds like another label for things people do anyway without having to call it anything. Sounds a bit like attention seeking doesn't it?

    OK,

Let me get this clear - if it's something that "people do anyway", I shouldn't give it "another label".

Right then, so anyone out there who doesn't eat meat - can you please STOP labelling yourselves "vegetarians". "Vegans" you qualify too as do "anarcho punks". Should I do a list ??

Attention seeking ?? Ha, that doesn't even warrant a comment. How can anyone involved in the Punk/Hardcore scene complain that Straight Edgers are attention seeking - look around you next time you're at a gig. I guarantee you'll see plenty of "attention seekers" in the crowd. That's what makes life interesting. If we were all the same the world would be a dull place indeed mon ami.

    Peace. :)

    Here's some history:

"Straight-edge refers to a philosophy that's most basic tenets promote a drug free lifestyle. It developed as an offshoot of the punk rock/hardcore scenes of the early 1980's when the term itself is believed to have been coined by Ian Mackaye, in the self titled song, while he was the singer of the seminal hardcore band, Minor Threat. Mackaye eschewed the nihilistic tendencies of punk rock, promoting instead the simple (almost simplistic) philosophy of "don't drink/ don't smoke/ don't ****."

In the 12 years since the demise of Minor Threat, these simple beliefs have transformed the minds of scores of teens worldwide. Increasingly disenchanted with societal ills, young men and women adopt the straight-edge doctrine as a blueprint to better first themselves, and then the world in which they live. While the original definition of straight-edge only included the rejection of mind altering substances and promiscuous sex, modern interpretations include a vegetarian (or vegan) diet and an increasing involvement and awareness of environmental and political issues."

And Brian was most likely smoking crack when Minor Threat where around.

Who cares who's drinking or not ?

Like I said before it's all about personal choice. You're just reinforcing my arguement. You do whatever's right for YOU at any particular point in time. At the time Ian Macaye was writing about straight edge, people in the DC scene were self destructing. All he was getting accross was that there was another choice / another way. You didn't have to drink if you didn't want to and that you were entitled to that choice. That' the crux of it. Fullstop.

I'm sick of hearing people complain about Straight Edgers being intolerant, when to my eye it's quite the opposite. In all my years I've never met, spoken to, or otherwise interacted with a Straight Edge person who had a problem with other people drinking etc. I've certainly never known anyone who hassled someone for drinking.

On the other hand I HAVE on many, many , many (too many), occassions known, seen & been hassled by people because I DON'T drink. I have been quetioned, verbally abused even physically intimidated because I don't drink. So who's intolerant now ??

Answers on a postcard to The Late Late Punk Show, Donnybrook, Dublin 4.

Exactly moonstomp! Just posted this over on eirecore where a similar argument is happening!!

In my 11 years I have never once told anyone they shouldn't drink or do drugs, i keep it to myself. I go to the pub a few times a week, but never feel the need to drink alcohol to enjoy myself, being out with my frineds is good enough, i like to remember my night out and i like having money in my wallet at the end of the night.

But in my 11 years of not preaching things like this have been thrown at me....

"oh my god you dont drink, how do you have fun"
"you don't drink, god you're boring"
"why are you in a pub if you dont drink"
    "you're a stupid asshole"
"get a drink into ya ya stupid ****"

    and on and on....

And don't forget - "Oh you must be the designated driver" and I've often been asked "are you a pioneer".

    Hi,

reading some of the posts there. I think Straight edge is great. For me its the ultimate in the you attitude that punk originally was all about-now punk is soooo commercialised, trendy, hip and above all conformative.I love the idea that there are punks out there pushing the boundarys of what it means to be a punk. True its very tongue in cheek and not everyones cup of tea but i think there is a wonderful indepence of mind/spirit by its practioneers.

I simply love the idea knowing that while we are marketed 'self deprecating nihilistic punk pop' ****e there are individuals out there willing to challenge and stimulate debate...it gets people thinking. Sure Punks can be arrogant ****ers but i still love the ethos...(anyhoo im going off thread here-sorry)

For any young punks out there (in your teens) there is a new DVD .We got it on pre-release.It charts the history of punk. Its great. But the change compared to the 'scene' now and 20 yeers ago is very interesting to watch and a little disheartening.

    Hi Cindy,

Thanks for adding to the debate. Yes we do need more people who can stretch to thinking outside of the box. There are too many people who think they own the punk "rulebook" and that you musn't dare break them rules!!

Can you tell us a bit more about the DVD - sounds interesting. What's it called and who released it ?

As someone wh's been a "punk" since 1982 (23 years !), I've seen plenty of changes in style/music/crossover etc over the years.

I think it's important that "punk" keeps adapting and updating itself - otherwise it becomes a stagnant genre like the ones it originally vowed to destroy.

    Peace,

    Moonstomp.

Y'all have a good weekend now - whether ye be on the piss or sipping on a cool glass of apple juice.
