A few people on here have expressed interest in taking swimming lessons.

The Markievicz pool on Townsend St will be taking names for the next set of adult lessons from Monday 3rd October. Lessons probably begin the following week, but check with the pool.

Cost is €65 for 10 lessons. Beginners & improvers classes. One class per week. Choose Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. Classes are at 8pm.

On a side note, I read in the paper this week that there were huge queues to sign the kiddies up for lessons in Templeogue. We really need more public pools in the city!

Isn't that place supposed to be a filthy dump though?

The gym is alright but the changing rooms are horrible and the pool is downright dangerous - the deep end must be a mad depth because i'm 5'8" and i couldn't stand and keep my head above water 3/4 the way down the pool.

No, it's not filthy. I swim there 5/6 times per week and I've never had a problem. The changing rooms are basic but OK.

eth0_, that's why it's called a deep end! It's 2m I think. It's designed to allow diving from the edge of the pool. and for treading water (both of which are part of the course!) If you can swim it's not a problem. If you can't you shouldn't be in the deep end in the first place. And there are always at least 2 lifeguards on duty. I think you might benefit from lessons if the deep end frightens you! :p

    For heaven's sake guys!

Markievicz website including link to pdf brochure. Lessons usually sell out in a day as far as I can tell. But I just swim there so I can't be sure.

Just a reminder that you can sign up for lessons tomorrow (Monday 3rd). Lessons begin the following week.

Are you going to sign up for deep-end training eth0_ ? :D

Sarsfield, i know Ive asked a few Q's before, but whats the classes like
I havent swam in a while and am a bit outta shape, Was thinking of enrolling for the improver classes, just wondering what type of age group are we talking and what standard??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,359 ✭✭✭Sarsfield

Age group is mostly 20s & 30s for improvers but age won't matter once you're over 18. No kids in this class.

The improvers classes aren't for improving your racing(!), they're purely to improve technique. Speed is NOT required.

I'd say the only prerequisites for improvers would be to be able to swim a couple of lengths of the pool (however badly and with breaks!) and probably being able to tread water for a bit.

But even if you're an OK swimmer, the lessons introduce lots of little things that make a big difference. The main thing is you learn to swim the 'official' strokes properly and efficiently.

But don't take my advice - phone them and ask. I don't want the blame if you drown on the first night

Well signed up for the improvers class there this morning.
Had a look around, its not the Olympic pool in Montreal but it will do me fine, and yes the changing rooms weren't in too bad nick.
Cheers sarsfield for all the help!

    Very good Roddy23!

Will you let us know how you find the classes? I probably sound like the Markievicz PR officer (I just swim there, honest), so a second opinion would be good!

The next set of lessons is starting shortly. I'm a bit late reporting this, so I don't know if theres space left.

How did the lessons go Roddy?
