Is it just me or do you think the article in the times a few days ago about a girl who got 600 points was crazy. She starts by saying shes not your average 600 pointer, but then goes on to mention that she studied at least 5 hours every weekday and then 10 hours a day on the weekends!!!! Amongst this she "managed" to fit in going to the gym, taking walks and going out, although I cant see where she fitted it into her schedule. She gave up all sport and lost contact with her old friends. Surely the leaving cert shouldnt become this big a part of your life.

lol, she was in my class in the institute. By "not your average" LC'er, meant she wasn't a nerd. If you want 600, that's what you need to do.

(To get an idea of what she's like, she once said she doesn't talk to northsiders)

    Well think about it this way;

Weekday: Get up at 6.30. Take 2.5 hours to get to gym, workout, shower, and go to school.
Begin school at 9.00, end at 4.30. Home by 5.00. Study for an hour. Take 30 mins for dinner. Study for 4 hours.
    Bed at 10.30.
    Total sleep: 8 hours
    Total life: None.

Work this out for the weekend, and you see how she fitted it in. Chances are she didn't go to the gym every day, but got up and studied anyway. There are also plenty of people who function with 6 hours' sleep, which gives her more time.

Essentially she's a freak who never spent any time just vegging out watching TV like a normal person. That's what you gotta do if you want 600.

Well said. Personally I am aiming for the mid 500s but I will not be dumping my friends/sport/life as a result. I read the article and wasnt impressed by it at all. her "guide" to getting 600 was a joke and I found she had nothing useful to say however if she is satisfied to have given up her life for a year to get into a course then fair enough thats her perogative.

Not for me, or any of my mates who I have talked to.

it's no wonder she did well, she did 45 hours a week study all year. thats almost more study than sleep... cos on weekends u migh stay awake late etc..

I hate reading these types of stories, they always make me feel like an idiot, especially since I haven't started studying.

Yeah she was going for actuarial studies or something 570 points but still...

I read that too, and posted somewhere here that it's absolutely ridiculous to think you have to study that much.

I bet you she's just another ditz who happens to be able to study well

Tell me she counted study as homework as well?!

I can't imagine actually being able to give up so much time like that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 531 ✭✭✭Lord Oz

Youth is too short to throw away studying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 112 ✭✭Paul_D

I’m aiming to get 600 points this year, but no way I would study 5 hours a day. In fact I’m not doing any study at all, nor half of my homework. I devote a lot of time for cycling and computer programming. But it is impossible to get 600 points without studying :) , so I will start studying at least 1-2 hours a day few months before the exams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 531 ✭✭✭Lord Oz

I can see those 600 points mean an awful lot to you. ;)

Damn I was about to say that. I wonder how 'intelligent' she actually was

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 247 ✭✭tripper

Yeah i read that and everyone would be thinkin that shes well sound, id say she is a ****in poncey bitch alot of people are like that in the institute but most people are bang on. And her guide to gettin 600 am..... thanks for stating the obvious there. Revise your notes everyday ehhhhhhh duh

  • Complete and Utter overkill. If ever there was an article to tell you not to aim for 600 points, this was it. more study than sleep? she can kiss my arse with her Actuarial degree. I know someone in her course who did enough work to get by till christmas, upped the ante and studied hard for her mocks and then harder for the Leaving.

She managed to have a life.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 719 ✭✭✭CrimE

Haha gotta love the reactions to her and the article, not a very popular person here is she :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 372 ✭✭Outcast

I know quite a few people who are aiming for six hundred or who have gotten six hundred and none of them study half as much as this one did. They are just really smart. The reason she wasn't typical was that she wasn't actually as intelligent as a lot of them but burnt her ass off, and then has the cheek to claim to be better, prettier, more sociable etc. than your "average 600 pointer".

anybody else think she was pretty hot? personality of a plastic band though.

Yeah I heard she was hot too, though I read the article on the Internet, which didnt have a picture  Still doesnt take away from the fact that shes an ejit with her head up her tanned arse.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 719 ✭✭✭CrimE

Haha I was wondering who was going to bring that up first. I resisited the temptation. Yeah well lets say I wouldnt kick her out of bed for eating crackers :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭JackKelly

i'll tell you first hand that yes, she is kinda hot. In a rabbit/porn star kinda way. I think we should stop giving this almost celebrity status though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,252 ✭✭✭Funkstard

From the pic in the paper she looks alright - she has a squegg face though, like Minnie Driver

She came into my class the other day to give the teacher wine! I thought she was nice! Give the girl a break she worked hard she got the results! She did easy enough subjects though! I mean buisness, ecconomics and accounting - all three subjects people usually take up in a year!! I'm doing Chemistry, Biology, History and German not exactly easy ( not that those buiseness subjects are but come on chemistry ewww!!!) She's right she isn't the typical 600 pointer. Whats wrong with being honest! Why am I even bothering? I think I'll go to bed because this is just really pointless!!!) P.S. Please don't bother correcting me on my spelling or grammer I'm sick and tired..... :p

The cold is a virus though isn't it? Not actually directly affected by the weather. Therefore it need not be cold for you to contract a cold.

I don't care what science tells me, I only get colds when its cold outside

I'm no scientist but the cold weather must affect your immune system in some form, judging by the Danone ad anyway, which would increase your chances of getting a cold during said cold weather.

I myself got my "back to school" cold as it were during rather hot weather and I got one during summer too for some reason.

Its the crucial element of L.Casei Immunitas that I'm missing. Does anyone else think they just lashed in some slightly sour milk into Actimels and made up a word for that chemical thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,756 ✭✭✭vector

Folks, we should remember that not everyone who gets 600 pts has no life, I know people who are just very sharp, very switched on, fast learners with near total recall.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 372 ✭✭Outcast

Yeah, what exactly is a typical 600 pointer?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,181 ✭✭✭abercrombie

its a steriotypical image of a nerd who studies and has no life...which is not true coz i know a good few people who got 600 pts and they were constantly out every weekend and had hockey training with me every thurs and sat evening for 3 hours...and those things take up a lot of time

Well it sounds to me as if she studied and had no life. I mean, 45 hours a week?! She just thinks she's not typical because she wears Ralph Lauren and has fake tan

    weird...

I would say the vast majority of 600 pointers don't come close to doing half that amount of work. That's a crazy amount and if you need to do that much work to get the points for your course, chances are you'll have a hard time in the course anyway. Two people from my year did really well, one spent his whole life (12 hours a day during holidays) studying and managed to get 580. He doesn't have one remaining friend and was actively pissing people of during class thinking he was some sort of uber-being. The other is a complete bum with absolutely no common sense who didn't do a stroke of work all year and walked away with 570. Both are doing the same course so no points for guessing who'll have the better time

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,856 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

I don't think it's healthy to do that to yourself over an exam... If you need to kill yourself for two years in order to get a course, you really have to ask yourself how important is it... I don't think it's worth it personally, but I guess some people have more defined goals, etc. There's normally different ways to go about getting your qualification, though. Like go abroad for a few years, have a blast, get your qualification, and come back. Is it worth the agony (at least for myself and all my friends) over this exam...?

There is no point in wasting THAT much time on school and study unless you enjoy it....What a waste of time, time which is priceless and even more so while your young!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,248 ✭✭✭4Xcut

if you had to put that much work into getting a 600 point leaving cert then theres no way you'd last in the corses needing the highest points

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,856 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

    Interesting point...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 124 ✭✭Caoimhe89

Ok, yeah, I'm only in fourth year, but I know two people in my school who got 600 points, and I know for a fact one of them was not doing ANYTHING like this girl. They did 9 hours supervised study a week, homework... and maybe a couple of hours during the weekends. She still played comogie and gaelic. And she wore fake-tan and owns Abercrombie clothes.

She is, of course, extremely intelligent. Well duh...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 372 ✭✭Outcast

We have to acknowledge that by whatever means she managed it this girl did get 600 points and will probably be very successful in life. But at the same time she clearly wasted two years of her life preparing for two weeks, that's not right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,756 ✭✭✭vector

    Outcast wrote:

The individual will undertake whatever training he feels necessary in his own time before the event. It is only the end result that counts.

This is the way of the world, take the driving test as an example. The test itself only lasts about an hour on one day, but the individual might practice reversing/parking etc for months beforehand, he is not "wast[ing]" months of his life.

well ok the leaving cert thing is taken too far by some ppl studying every day, but its every man for himself at the end of the day, if you need 500pts for course xyz and you only get 495 then you don't get in, end of story.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 372 ✭✭Outcast

But if we look at life like that everything is a way of preparing for something else and we never actually appreciate what we're doing right now.

Hate to bump up an old post but in religion on friday we had to spend the class reading that article.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,773 ✭✭✭Binomate

She was in my year before she went to the Institute after 5th year. She is a smart girl and I always thought she had a very active social life. She wouldn't have fitted into the stereotypical "loser" group or genre which is what you would have expected after reading the article about her in the times. I say fair play to her for having the motivation to get what she wanted. I'll never forget the day my History teacher heard she was giving up History for the Leaving Cert. She studied half of the LC Higher History course and was an A student in that. I don't see why the hell they wrote about her. I know a girl in Galway who got 700 points over all in 7 exams.
P.S. Who ever said she said that she doesn't talk to northsiders, I'd say thats bullshit!"
