The Belief-O-Matic!

    Hello all,

Firstly, I wasn't certain which catagory to post this thread to so I opted for Christianity even though it is a bit more than just that.

Now. Many months ago I denounced my original faith, Roman Catholicism as I denied many of their beliefs, issues with homosexuality, abortion, women, priesthood, etc. and was just plain sick of the whole faith as a whole. I wanted something a bit more modern, liberal and open-minded (free to have more diverse beliefs).

For ages, I was pondering over what to be (if any!) so as I was unsure even of what I truelly believed in I seeked some help over the internet. I found this website "Belief-O-Matic". The Belief-O-Matic is a quiz which asks you certain questions about faith and modern issues by giving you a number of choices and a priority scale in each question. At the end it matches your beliefs to one the many religions of the world today.

    Here are my results:
    1. Unitarian Universalism (100%)
    2. Liberal Quakers (98%)
    3. Neo-Pagan (93%)
    4. New Age (90%)
    5. Reform Judaism (84%)
    6. Mahayana Buddhism (83%)
    7. Sikhism (77%)
    8. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (77%)
    9. Bahá'í Faith (75%)
    10. Jainism (66%)
    11. New Thought (66%)
    12. Scientology (62%)
    13. Hinduism (62%)
    14. Theravada Buddhism (61%)
    15. Orthodox Judaism (59%)
    16. Secular Humanism (52%)
    17. Orthodox Quaker (50%)
    18. Islam (49%)
    19. Taoism (48%)
    20. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (43%)
    21. Nontheist (27%)
    22. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (22%)
    23. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (21%)
    24. Eastern Orthodox (20%)
    25. Jehovah's Witness (20%)
    26. Roman Catholic (20%)
    27. Seventh Day Adventist (16%)

As you can see I topped the poll with Unitarian Universalism, a very modern, liberal and free religion with diverse beliefs. I also got high with Liberal Quakers and Reform Judaism but funnily enough Roman Catholic was far from me. I found it very useful but of course it doesn't name every single faith and gives the result on the closest match.

I'm very satisfied I did this test as now I am happily practising Unitarian Universalism in the church at St.Steven's Green, Dublin and it has opened my eyes very clearly.

I would recommend this online test to anyone who is unsure in what they believe in, would like to find and discover a new faith or would like to see some interesting results. I has really helped me so see what it could do for you. Here's the link again: "Belief-O-Matic". Enjoy! ;)

Big P.S.: If anyone has decided to do this test, please feel free to post your results in this thread. I would be extremelly grateful if someone shares their results. Thanks a million $! :D

I'm so glad you have admitted that atheism is a faith like any other, except for its absent object. ;)

It is tongue in cheek I suspect. I hope. No one would let a personality test decide their worldview for them croc.

For me, my actual positions are at 4 and 6. Having done the test, I don't think it is a very good one for Christians since the salvatory question is inaccurate and it doesn't probe deeply enough the attitudes to Scripture. But I'm off to the very lovely folk at the Society of Friends!

Yeah, obviously this is just a bit of fun.
Though I would not be surprised if there are people out there who take it seriously.

RC is the furthest away from me. Which I believe is true. I was raised in a mixed religion house-Catholic and Protestant and attended both churches. I turned my back on both at the age of 12 and my beliefs at the time were structured around Paganism or Wicca. Although I stopped practising this when I left school.I'm not so sure about the results at the top of my list as I'd consider myself an agnostic

apparently leberal quakerism is the way forward for me!

however trying to quantify your faith through a test such as this is BS.

    Hello everyone!
Many thanks for these replies and don't hesitate to keep them coming. :D
I have two issues with this test first "Scientology" is included  That's not a religion, it's a money making machine/horror house/corporation. Second is your belief that you need a religion......and you therefore use a website pop quiz to decide your religion for you......am I the only one who finds that simply a bit nonchalant? Religion isn't like choosing and ice-cream flavour; it also seems to be missing the most important flavour of all; atheism - it's a good church I recommend all of you to join it ;)

To OfflerCrocGod, I thank you greatly for expressing your opinion as this is more of what the world needs, eh? Scientology I agree is "a money making machine/horror house/corporation" but it is very much a religion as it is a belief system. Also, where did I say that you need a religion? I merely said that if one is unsure, etc. about their beliefs that this test acts as a guideline to religions which match in according to their beliefs and inform one of religions which they may not be aware of. It isn't accurate, of course, as it only acts as an outline. Atheism, hmmmm, well the fact is I believe in something so it doesn't really match. Thanks for your recommendation but no thanks. :o
-Oh and if religions were ice-cream flavours Unitarian Universaliam would be a bowl of every flavour, especially coffee! Judasim would be the classic vanilla, Christianity - neapolitan(3 flavours represent Father, Son ,Holy Spirit), Islam - chocolate(be observant!), Hinduism - chocolate chip(so many gods, so many chips), Buddhism - butterscotch(that relaxing feeling). Lol!

Now, after scrutinising everyone's scores there is definitely a great division line between the more radical, liberal faiths such as Unitarianism and Lib. Quaker and to the more conservative faiths such as as Catholicism and Adventist. And some come in between and others under the umbrella of non-religious systems such as humanism and nontheism and others paganism. Interesting and diverse results. . .

    To bus77,
Thank you also for replying and the link to the Bahá'í Faith website as I've never heard of this faith before. I think they have a great belief system going on here. I especially like this belief as quoted:
The central theme of Bahá'u'lláh's message is that humanity is one single race and that the day has come for its unification in one global society. God, Bahá'u'lláh said, has set in motion historical forces that are breaking down traditional barriers of race, class, creed, and nation and that will, in time, give birth to a universal civilization. The principal challenge facing the peoples of the earth is to accept the fact of their oneness and to assist the processes of unification.

One of the purposes of the Bahá'í Faith is to help make this possible. A worldwide community of some five million Bahá'ís, representative of most of the nations, races and cultures on earth, is working to give Bahá'u'lláh's teachings practical effect. Their experience will be a source of encouragement to all who share their vision of humanity as one global family and the earth as one homeland.

Universalism is also like that as it also teaches the unity of everyone as at the end of the day we're all human beings. If more people thought like this Bahá'í way there would be less racism, homophobia, sexism, discrimination and less fights over holy lands such as Israel/Palestine in the world.
    Good luck! ;)

I don't understand how a person could base their religion and beliefs off of a quiz on the internet. It looks, to me, your looking for something to just call yourself instead of something to really believe in. Your looking for a website to determine your religion?? I think most of you need to sit down and figure out what you really want.
I also don't understand how this thread could be Christian. Most of these people talk about believing in the existence of person named Jesus but not died for the sins of the world. Hey, Im not Bible scholar, but that doesn't sound like the Bible to me.

That's not what this thing is doing. What's happening is that you tell it what you believe, and it tells you whether or not you match with what you think you are. The funny thing is that most people don't believe what they're supposed to believe!

Whether or not they do anything about it is compltely up to them, but at least they'll have some kind of indication of how far off-target they are :)

Christianity is in favour of equal rights for all humanity. Human Rights are things that are shared by all humanity. It is more than a shame that the church has given a diametrically oppossed impression.

Ordination, marriage (in the Christian sense) or adoption are not things that all humanity have an instant right to.

Yes I understand this and wasn't pointing out that Christianity featured so strongly in my results after the answers I gave, just that conservative Christianity came higher than liberal Christianity. Surely conservative Christians don't believe in abortion?

But you may have had other things in common that liberal ones do not hold.
So the amount of conservative things you believe are more than the liberal.

You are forced to go to mass? Well, if you really despise it then refuse to go. You have the right to say no and if you really don't consider yourself Catholic or anything then there is no point being there. My cousine was forced to go to mass every Sunday and one Sunday she put her foot down and said "No!" and her mother had no control. So let me give you a push - stand up for your rights!:D

Aisling, you cannot be a practing catholic if it is by force, your practise would have no meaning so you would only be deluding yourself. In addition, thought I am a Buddhist, I know that you do not have to be a catholic to believe in your God.

I'm none of the above anyway. Unless one of the above is someone who is still searching.
Some of the questions are way to general but good fun to pass five minutes.

    > It lists 'secular humanism' as a religion? :p

Hey, Brian, just because something's written down doesn't mean that it's actually true. Try work with that thought for a while :p

Looks like I'll never be able to post to the Atheist forum again with a clear conscience, as I was obviously a Buddhist all along. That said, I'm actually pretty chuffed at how it turned out. I know its just for fun, but I still find an element of wonder at how us ex Roman Catholics seem to show no residuals of the faith at all. I'm not even sure what a Jain is, but I'm deemed to have more of it.
