He was an olympic lifter (iirc) and was never upto much.
Article made him out to be a poor farm boy who used to train in an open hay barn but one who was tricked into taking steroids by nasty eastern european lifters and coaches on his first training camp abroad.

If you try unison.ie you might get the article again.

Ireland has never had any 'prospects' in olympic lifting and imo we never will. It is not down to drugs it is the fact that the champions train as much as 4 times a day with weights from a young age and have a support structure that allows this to happen.

Was Daly about 100-110kgs? Those little turkish lads would've wiped the floor with him and they are in the 50-60kg bracket - which puts it into perspective!

there doesnt seem to be a search function on unision.ie for old articles. only a web one. maybe i could use a google hack to find it... any help??

thats how i recall him being portrayed too, very naieve but also i recall he was ONLY 20kg off the top guys which means he was cleaning over 200kg. thats an awesome weight in anyones books.
Id love to read that article. The scene here is starting to improve. there are a few clubs springing up and almost all AIL player train with the OL lifts so it may seep down gradually. Still until we start recruiting 12 yr olds we've no chance at the very top in anything but at least we could get some guy competing

He might have been 20kgs off the top guys in bodyweight but not in lifts.

There's a list of his competitive lifts in these links :1 and 2 .

It seems he was in the 105KG division.

great links thanks. If i shed a kilo or 2 id be in the top 100 back in 2000.
His lifts are impressive enough for an irish guy (surely he hold the irish record??). 135 snatch and 165 c+j are about what im aiming for 2-3 yrs down the line. at the mo i can only deadlift 165 but im homing on on 135 in the clean. doesnt matter though cas i cant lock it out yet. of course i am much lighter than him and younger. and my technique is still relatively crap

A few (three?) years ago, Kerry weightlifter David Daly tested positive for stanozolol and was banned for life from the sport.
