Not sure why they announce them so early, especially with the All-Ireland final still to be played, but the Irish News has announced the official Ulster All-Stars team:

    Paul Hearty (Armagh)

    Ryan McMenamin (Tyrone)
    Kevin McCloy (Derry)
    Andy Mallon (Armagh)
    Aaron Kernan (Armagh)
    Kieran McGeeney (Armagh)
    Philip Jordan (Tyrone)

    Paul McGrane (Armagh)
    Sean Cavanagh (Tyrone)

    Brian Dooher (Tyrone)
    Stephen O'Neill (Tyrone)
    Thomas Freeman (Monaghan)
    Steven McDonnell (Armagh)
    Ronan Clarke (Armagh)
    Paddy Bradley (Derry)

Interesting that there's only three players not from Armagh or Tyrone but they are two of the best teams in the country. What do people think?

I think that Oisin McConville could feel a bit hard done by. I would of put him in ahead of Dooher.

I think it's a pointless exercise, and they must not have been able to sell advertising space.

It's not completeley pointless, but not all that important either. Dooher's lucky to get in. Would have put Mulligan in on the basis of the last couple of games, but he didn't do a whole lot earlier in the season. Wouldn't have McMenamin purely because of the incident where he dropped to his knees on top of the player. Not a whole lot to argue over, except in goals, James Reilly would get my vote, but the fact that Cavan only went as far as they did probably didn't help

These are actual awards though, voted by the readers of the paper. They're not made up by some journalist like Spilanne does his in The Sunday World. They've been running for years now.

i worked at the all star awards in the armagh city hotel :D

What about Mac fadden and Brendan Devenney from donegal?

Dunno about McGeeney and Clarke being on the list, I think I'd of had McConville on the list before either of them.

No surprise Stephen O'Neill won best player.

Then again I suppose its a fair indication of the current dominant teams in Ulster.

Maybe because they are only based on games the Ulster Championship? I know that is the case with the Munster All Stars

Does this mean that the ulster canditates for the All Ireland All stars can only be picked from this list??

Nope, but I'd imagine if you don't make this list that you're going to have it hard to make the final list.

Nope, because it mentioned that Ronan Clarke would of probably got one in 2002 had the results not come before his All-Ireland final display.

Ah come on-I'm from Donegal and I wouldn't have had either of those guys anywhere near an All Star team. They may have the ability, but their attitude is piss poor.

I think the only Donegal man that deserved consideration would be Neil Gallagher, but Donegal didn't play enough championship football this year to be considered for too many All Star awards of any kind.
