There is the Buttery restaurant and a sandwich bar at the Arts Block end of college, and two cafeterias and the Junior Common Room which sells food at the Hamilton Building end. And then there's shops and restaurants all around Trinity. You're spoilt for choice.

I like the food in the Buttery, because it's cheap and I'll eat anything, but apparently it's not popular among others. It's not very high quality food, that's for sure. The meals change daily, but examples would be €3.50 for meat in Guinness gravy with veg or chilli con carne with veg, and €5.00 for meat you can actually recognise with veg and potatoes. Of course, you can always get sausage, beans and chips.

It's open for lunch from midday. It keeps serving chips and the like until about 7:30. After hours, the Ents crew often hold events there.

The Buttery as cheap and nasty as a €10-per-hour hooker. The food is CRAP, I honestly would have to be paid to eat there. A 5-min walk takes you up to Marks & Spencer, where €3.50 will get you a proper, healthy lunch or a microwaveable meal that actually tastes and looks edible.

I like the chicken burgers there. Also they serve sausages beans and chips (or mash) for cheap enough, which does you well.

Opening hours...well I think it's open from 8 in the morning. Until 11am, you have the option of getting a "buttery breakfast" which does the job nicely. The bar is usually open from around 2pm until 11pm.

Job-wise, I wouldn't work in the Buttery. There are probably jobs going for the bar in the buttery though. Apart from jobs there, you could apply to the SU shops for a job, or to the SU bookshop, or the JCR, or to the library...most of this info would be distributed through a mailing list. To subscribe, just send an email to sujobs AT tcd.ie with 'subscribe list' in the subject line. An email is usually sent every few days...

Buttery food isn't the best but it hits the spot if you're hungry. I normally bring my own food or go to Lunch (there's one at the back of Brown Thomas and another just near Goldsmith Hall). Spar and Centra can also be lifesavers.

These are strange questions. Can I ask why you want to know if the food is cheap & nice, and if there are jobs?? I don't see the connection.

Pav food, (chicken fillet sandwiches, onion rings, chips, sausages, soup etc etc) is freakin lovely! I agree that buttery food is pretty gross.

Sorry, this discussion had escaped my notice. I've only read the first message, and I am surprised that it was even responded to.

"Is their a cantine, is the food nice,

    What institution educated you, MATE?

Any creative folk out there want to come up with an Overzealous Grammar Police Gathering Card for moments like this?

I take deep offence to that, and I suspect that if I accused you of having an object in your rectum then you would ban me from your discussion board immediately.

I don't think that being appalled at such spelling, particularly on a discussion board which claims to be associated with a college which educates and presents people for degrees, justifies a response like yours.

How dare you I agree wholeheartedly with both your initial observation and your complete revulsion with the "moderators" ignorant and just plain rude comment. Sure it’s great to have "moderators" policing the guest book but who is going to police the "moderators"???

Being upset about grammar is one thing but there's no need to act like an asshole about it. How do you know he's not dyslexic or something (not saying you are Sandals, just making a point)?

The old dining hall is pretty good for food, though can any student eat there?

"John2", I'm sure you would have phrased any disapproval of subpar spelling in a much more ecumenical way. Thank you for your support "ninja 101", I'm sure you will agree that none of these loose-spellers will ever edit the University Calendar.

Should that not read "moderator's" ?
    Howdareyou wrote:

Should that not read "In which institution were you educated friend?"

Are subpar and loose-spellers really words? Or am I just confused by wandering hyphens?

I suggest that there is a possibility if you read the original post again that the OP is merely looking for work and is not a student.

"Would you two ever wise up and give the guy a break" - Hagar :p

"Hagar": "What institution educated you, MATE?" is an in-joke, as I believe they're called. Its history is long and complicated. I hope you agree with me on the hyphen in "in-joke".

you might wanna throw in a 'h' in hyphen...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,786 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

Forgive for not being privy to an in-joke. I am just one of the great un-washed.

That still does not explain the other faux pas in the posts...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 30 howdareyou

You're absolutely right "young nastyman", and I do apologise. However, I do know how to spell hyphen, and it was simply an oversight.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 55 ✭✭young nastyman

cool, glad we cleared that up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 30 howdareyou

"Hagar", being in on the in-joke wasn't necessary to understand the question. I also believe that "what institution educated you, MATE?" is grammatically correct. "Mate" may be slightly colloquial, and the capitalisation a modern method of raising one's voice on a computer's screen. Your other point was to do with hyphens. The use of hyphens is a less definite art than the use of apostrophes. I remember a time when "today" was spelt "to-day". "ninja 101" can answer for his own misuse of apostrophes - I did mention already today that I cannot defend his use of them.

Lunch time they serve the same food as downstairs, just nicer surroundings and subsequently sometimes longer queues. In the evenings there's commons, Scholars and Fellows eat for free and any student can buy tickets for it, think it's about 13euro for a three course meal.

So how does the food compare to NUIG? Does Smokies have anything on The Buttery? I'm only starting as a postgrad in October so should I be prepared to suffer culture shock? *g*

The scones in TCD aren't as nice as the ones i've had in the Student Bar in NUIG. The food in the Buttery is about par with the stuff in the big canteen (can't remember the name, on the ground floor, steps down to it from the big building with towers on it) in NUIG, but maybe a little less choice.

However, TCD has lots of cafes and restaurants a short way aways from the railings, so there's always 'outside world' options.

That said, the sausage, beans and mash combination in the Buttery really hits the button sometimes. The hot food in the Science Canteen (the 'ham caf') isn't the best, but there's an ok sandwich bar thing. The Westland Row cafe inside the Hamilton building does nice doughnuts and coffee - they're a lifesaver for me when i absolutely need a caffeine and sugar injection. The JCR, in Goldsmith, has yummy dead pig rolls during the day.

ETA: i'm still waiting for the Grammar Police Gathering Card... :)

Just remembered that the Westland Row cafe in the Hamilton does pizza that is pretty nice. I wouldn't write home about it but it fills a hole.

Fills a hole? That sounds vaguely pornographic.
