Things that genuinely depress you

OK. I'm not talking about things that piss you off (Israel, George Bush, etc.), I'm talking about things that actually depress you/get you down/etc.

    I'll start...

Not being in control of my emotions due to external factors (women, work, friends.)

    That's about it.

    You?

I never get depressed. I just get on with it.

    My debts.
    My (non-existent) love life.
    My lack of self-discipline.
Loneliness and missing friends that are travelling.
The mistakes I've made and general lack of achievements in my life.
The imbalance between my ambitions and level of drive required to attain those ambitions.
    My family.
    My lack of fitness.
And about a million other things...

I'm pretty good at shutting it out and just getting on with life though. It's at night when trying to go to sleep that it all rears up on you... Which is why I post late on boards or read until I'm ready to just pass out. Probably not healthy but it helps me to get by.

hmm... rather more revealing of my true nature than most of my posts on here and in AH of all forums!

I can see this thread turning into a "Let's feel sorry for ourselves" thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,366 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Feeling sorry for yourself is for your teens, after then you just get bitter :p

    My beer gut.
The fact that I just came out of a four year relationship, which I loved being in.
I miss the friends that I made while being in that relationship.
    Money.

    On the upside....
    I'm loosing the beer gut.
I'm scoring regularly, so that takes my mind off of it.
    My friends are great.

I still have money issues though!

    My debts.

Well - they annoy me more than depress me.

Humanity in general is one thing which has the actual ability to depress me (... but generally doesn't, thankfully)...

It doesn't take anything particular for me, it's all seemingly random. Leading scientists hypothesis it's all about lunar phases.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,783 ✭✭✭Puck

That MTV dating show "Dismissed" or whatever you call it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭Farls

After coming out of a long relationship (dumped)
Debts (don't annoy me that much )
Not knowing what I REALLY want to do with my life ( builder or programmer )
Thinking of mistakes i've made through the years

I dont believe in depression as such...like ok you can feel down for a while about something but some get up and go and you'll be right as reign again...not much in everyday life that cant be fixed with time and some work i'm working on my above list at the moment :) .

I'm similar to sleey though, i stay on here posting as late as i can so that when i goto bed i sleep and not lie there thinking of the above shít list :(

Debts has been mentioned a few times.

Are we talking home loans or credit card debt?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭embee

At the moment, the skyrocketing cost of bloody petrol.

OK, but I'm talking about depressed, not pissed off.

Well, things that piss you off can depress you too.

True, but there is a big difference between lying in bed worrying about debt and being pissed off about the price of petrol.

I really doubt (hope) embee doesn't lie in bed, awake, worrying about the price of petrol...

No, but embee could lie in bed worrying about debt, which would lead to worrying about the price of petrol

    Oooohh good thinking.

    True.

But I am more interested in the basic things that piss you off. Not the things which add to it.

If you know what I mean...

credit union loan and credit card debt....i dont worry about either though as i'm due a lot of money after christmas when i get my house sold for > 12 times what i currently owe. :)

    Nice!

My thinking is similar, but it's more long term: I'll be a millionaire when my parents die! (Joke-ish)

    :)

Isn't it funny how life becomes a problem when you start earning money?

Oh it has to be work for me...

not so much the job itself... but some of the people... yes...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

a lot of things depress me. Dublin depresses me, the current state of international affairs, the current state of this country, religion depresses me, crime depresses me............yeah yeah, so Im a manic depressive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭embee

Right... the price of petrol depresses me, mainly because of the knock on effect is has on other aspects of life.

Generally, I don't get that depressed about stuff... mainly its missing friends and loved ones who are far away, or thinking about friends who have died always makes me a little sad. Work doesnt depress me, because I know I'm leaving at Christmas and not going back \o/

Companies that exploit workers or customers.

    People who aren't friendly.

    Bigots.

Anyone who commits a random act of violence on another human or on an animal.

People who steal from other people.

People who don't voice their opinion enough.

    Oil.

    Petrol.

    The Irish Government.

    Many other governments.

*All these things do actually depress me, not just piss me off*

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

wow, been thinkin' some more and a lotta stuff depresses me. Christmas, some politicians, compensation culture, drinking culture, bloodthirsty corporations, being female and being expected to have children, voter apathy, America and their government and their foreign policy, my boss and the company I work for....

Lack of control in my life at the mo.
Lack of a (not even a love life!) crush on someone
    The inability to sleep
Depeche Mode's "Ultra" - Seriously, lots of bad memories
Irish Government and people putting up with them

/I'm off to weep now :(

A shortage of seats on the train in the morning.

Sitting is one of man's truly purest pleasures and to have it denied at the time one most needs it is bloody criminal

oh that reminds me, Iarnrod Eireann, and parting with 20quid for a train ticket. Generally public transport in this country is a national embarrassment

The only thing that really gets to me is my stupid job and lack of funds/debt!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭Tobias Greeshman

    - Price of Petrol
    - This bloody countries rip-off culture.
    - Friends I no longer see from college or before.
    - The Kip I live/rent in (cant afford to move yet)
    - People I know who are no longer my friends.
    - Knowing my current relationship with my gf wont last, seeing my future going to places that wont include her.
    - Thinking about how my life in college was waaayyyy more fun than it is now.
    - Hearing people go on about their social lives, which are much better than my own.

Student Loan, Credit Cards & Overdraft. The depressing thing is that even if I liquidated everything I own, I'd still be in debt. So I'm currently worth less than nothing financially. Sometimes I think about setting up in business as a sole trader, just to be able to be bankrupted...

That there is allways something, I would love to slow down the pace of things. It feels like wake up and start running until I have to go to bed again, that really sucks.

Allot of other things, I dont feel like making a list, but the above is what was on my mind this morning.

That and the ****e weather. We have 3 months of this till poxy christmas and then 3 months of bitter cold till we get to see sun again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭Grem

I get depressed when people look down on you for not having a college education.
Its like, "Oh your ONLY a receptionist, so what did you do in college". I dropped out of college and it was the biggest mistake i ever made. Im going back at night next year and im going away for a year in between so that'll be amazing but id much prefare to be doing it with a degree under my belt.
Money, or lack thereof is another thing that can really get me down.

This thread depresses me. Damn you for making me think about my problems!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭irlirishkev

My job was depressing me - but now I've landed a new one, that I actually want so that's okay.

Winter drawing in - Especially as it's a sh*te day outside. Just reminds me that winter's on it's way. I hate the thought of finishing work when it's dark outside.

The Gym - Busting a gut 3 times a week, and not seeing the effects I should be seeing.. Will have to do something about that.

That's about it.. It's been a pretty good year so far :)

    K.

    but anyway:
    My job
    friendships that have ended/drifted
    lack of money
    lack of motivation
    Death
