Since there doesn't seem to be a suiting forum *cough*, thought I'd post it here.

So what weird and wonderful subjects and activities is your class up to?
And how does everyone feel about the choice to do/not do TY?

On our timetable, we've got some pretty interesting and new subjects; Japanese, Photography, Cooking (new to me and my school anyway) and Media Studies.

And yesterday we went to Blessington Activity Centre (I think it's called), in Wicklow. That was good fun.
So far I'm glad I chose to do TY.

Well every Tuesday and Thursday we have different activites and then in February they change. For this half of the year I'm doing Cookery on Tuesdays and Photography on Thursdays. From February on I'll have Drama on Tuesdays and TV Production on Thursdays. Then ther's the Greek trip in June and other assorted things: Work Experience, Community Care, Form trip, etc.

i say do ty! it's such a great experence and you won't forget any of the stuff you already because schools generally keep up the "core subjects" so you won't forget any of the important ****. i'm doin lc now and i'm so glad i did it

Well when i did it two years ago i had my doubts as the same as anyone else.I actually did enjoy most of the year and im not going to regret doing it but some of our "Extra curriculum"or what ever you call them were plain, boring and uselsess.I did like humanities however and i put 100% in that.

I'm loving TY at the moment! We do all the standard subjects (Irish, Maths etc) but we get to have triple classes, like triple Speech and Drama. We've started so many projects already, like designing costumes for various parades, organising talent shows, and in May we're off to the European Space Agency for astronaut training!

    im also loving TY :)
looking forward to next wednesday as well but all in all less to do (not in a bad way)
i have taken up European Studies and Video Editing for my TY subjects and im liking them, my older subjects have also got more interesting. I'm getting more time to improve my German further and become more fluent in it (teachers good and encourages class conversation in German and doesnt give too much hw). I have also got more time to dedicate more of my time to doing music. Im taking part in the musical "Grease" this year and im hoping to enter into the Wesley Interschools Festival (couldnt do it last year because of mocks =/) but this year seems good alrite :)
    have fun all :D

4 classes of catering on fridays! 4! Yay! Apart from that the only interesting thing I'm doing this module is Spanish. But I will get to do Journalism. I can't wait! But wed on't get to woodwork because the school we were supposed to be going to for it couldn't organise it. And I was sooooooo looking forward to that!
Oh, and does anyone do Form and Fusion? Because my school does, but I just heard that CocaCola pulled out of being the sponsors and it may not go ahead...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 191 ✭✭*MmmPie*

Form and Fusion was one of the main reasons I wanted to do TY, when class found out about Coca-Cola pulling out in July, I was absoloutely gutted!!! *sighs*

Anyone doing photography - I'm jealous.

However, my subjects aren't too bad. Doing Philosophy, Spanish, Technology Enterprise Development.. Japanese, Drama, Self Defence, Catering. Obviously not all at once.

Also we're doing a Film Studies day where we get to make short films. W00t.

I'm really enjoying TY. I'm taking European Studies and continuing French, and I'm also doing photography (I'm loving it SO much!) and Drama. After Christmas some subjects change so I'll be doing Home Ec and Dance.

I'm even enjoying PE! Which is new for me.

The only complaint I would have is that in history at the moment we're doing the Famine in Ireland and it's sooooooo boring. I hate it. Other than that, YAY TY!

Wait, Mysteryfish, you're ENJOYING PE?! Who are you, and what have you done with the Pan I knew and loved?

On topic, I'm doing Judo (Which is fun, except for the backwards roll handstands, which aren't!) and music, where we're writing our own song. After Christmas, I'm doing crafts and bridge. (YAY!) Ooh, and in history we're doing a project on Alexander the Great, and his influences on managment techniques!

Just learned today that we're doing Criminology- the study of Crime, criminals, preventing crime and the phsycologly of it all.
    Interesting.

We're doing some Sudoku in maths, just to pass time in the double class we have. It's so fun!

Although apparently the japanese for 'maths' is actually Su Gaku.

That souned reasonable at first, but isn't Sudoku nothing to do with Maths? (apart from the fact that they use numbers)

It uses logic and problem solving apparently. It's fun, anyway!

And it encourages people to learn how to count from 1-9. =)

I got very very little out of Transition Year. I'm in 5th year now and I'm glad to be free of the cr*p involved with it. It feels so good to just do some good honest work instead of bluffing my way through the likes of a 3 month long module on Spanish culture. What's the point? I learned nothing! I was forced to do an introduction to Accounting despite the fact I did Business Studies for three years beforehand. I was forced to do ordinary level maths for a year despite the fact I got an A at higher level in the JC).

Despite what people have said, my Irish, English and Maths have declined as a result of TY, even though we continued to do the subjects throughout. My French wasn't hurt because the teacher made no concessions for TY and continued to teach French like he does with every year.

I did my DATs in TY too. They told me absolutely nothing I didn't already know. I did my ECDL. Over half of the information they gave me is completely useless to me (except of course copy and paste which came in handy for a number of the more pointless projects)! But at least I know my joke qualifications make me better than those who didn't do TY.

And it's not even like I didn't put any effort into the year. During the year I took part in some 20 extra cirricular activities (that's what's on my wonderful TY certificate, though the number is actually larger), I won several prizes at our TY prize giving and will be getting a certificate for distinction (the best one might I add) later on this year at the school prize giving.

Whew. It feels good to get that off my chest. :o

I was kinda skeptical going into TY (I only really did it because nobody I knew wasn't), but I really like it so far! We're learning Spanish, & doing a module on Driver's Theory too. Instead of the Form & Fusion competition our school's art teacher (who's also a yoga teacher & dietician) is going to do different modules with us, starting with 6 weeks of yoga which isn't really art but will be fun anyway. Our musical is going to be Grease too. We do Construction & Cookery too, each for half the year (the two classes swap over after Xmas). We also do Hotel & Catering, & we're thinking of entering some projects for the Young Social Innovator's Award. We haven't heard about any trips so far, except for one to Mountjoy & the National Concert Hall (strange, I know. Apparently they tell you not to touch the walls in Mountjoy).

    We went into town yesterday.
We were selling sticky plasters for the Order of Malta.
    Charity work.
It was actually good fun. Annoying people the whole way up Grafton Street untill they gave you money. :D

We get to do form and fusion after all! Well, not the proper one, just for 10 schools, but still!! Is anyone else here doing it??

I'm kinda regretting dong TY now. I mean it was good for the first while but even the teachers in my school see it as a doss and I'm forgetting everything I used to know and learning NOTHING (never thought I'd complain about not having to learn...)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,479 ✭✭✭✭philologos

its gonna be hard to get back to study next year

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,964 ✭✭✭memphis

I would have done TY during the academic year of 97/98 and while I enjoyed doing it at the time I think its the biggist dose of a year ever. Now that I'm in my mid 20's I realise how pointless it was for me to do it.

By doing an extra year in school I was 19 before sitting my leaving cert. I also did a poor leaving most likely due to the fact that I got lazy from doing TY. I was the same after leaving when I went to college. I lacked motivation, had no interest in study, and eventually packed in my course.

I have since gone back to college, and am currently a student, but in my personal opinion if it wasn't for Ty I'd have graduated from college ages ago and be out working in a well paid job by now.

Because of TY, I had a break in the routine, wasn't doing much study and that, so then when I went into 5th year I wasn't interested in study like I had been up til 3rd year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,479 ✭✭✭✭philologos

You will never know that TY caused that unless you had not done TY you never know you could be the exact same had you skipped it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36 BlueRollingPin

There's quite a lot to do for TY in my school. We've got twenty modules lasting five or six weeks each. Some of them are legal studies, self defence, leisure, bridge, first aid, film studies and key boarding (incredibly interesting, as I'm sure you all can imagine). We also have the option of doing a musical with another school which I'm sure will be fun, although I don't know what one we're doing yet.

I'm doing the Form and Fusion competition within the school - It's just groups of art students compeating against each other which makes for an interest art class with all the groups glaring at each other suspiciously :D

I really enjoyed TY..Form and Fusion ROCKED..our school came second last year. Think the trip up to the point for that was brilliant..
We had three trips away to the gaeltacht,Dublin and an adventure camp..
Another main part of out TY was a musical that Tys put on every year which was really enjoyable.
We had good modules too like pyscology, grooming and deportment photography, first aid, self defence etc..
We also took part in PAL public acess to law which was good
I dont think that it was TY that makes 5th year so hard..I think its the fact that the course is extremely different from junior cycle. Like from September to NOvember you've probable leant the same amount you did in the WHOLE JC!!
Do TY is my advice I think it will make your CV way more colourful!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36 BlueRollingPin

Cool, it's sounds like you had a really good time. I wish we did a pyscology in my school - It seems like such an interesting subject. What does grooming and deportment involve?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,432 ✭✭✭Steve_o

i did TY in 2001 and it was ok for a while <the relaxed approach> But i got bored of doing sweet f*** all everyday, would have much rathered goin to 5th yr in hinds sight and gettin it over with!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 122 ✭✭Fenny

I'd love to do Psychology as a TY module, it sounds really interesting. Mostly everything's the same, except a lot more of a doss. We do a little bit of Leaving Cert maths and lots of sudoku, our Irish teacher is teaching us primary school Irish (as in, all about the irregular verbs and stuff :P), and the extra modules we have are ECDL, Science (we're doing forensic science for now, but apparently we're going do a little bit of medicine, too), global issues, mental health, spanish, etiquette, driving lessons and the musical in February (it's Les Miserables). There's some other stuff I'm forgetting, but that's the general gist.

I'm half-loving TY, half-hating it, because although it's good craic and mostly interesting, sometimes it seems just so pointless and boring. Apparently after the Christmas it gets insanely busy, so here's hoping. (For the moment though, roll on fifth year!)
