Running in the winter means burning lungs and lots of soakings.I'm pretty sure running uses muscles in a different way, change of emphasis, than cycling so may hamper your cycling? Why not cycle in the winter, indoor spinning or some such.
If your knees are any way dodgy running will show it up,cycling ,swimming.elliptical trainers and rowers are better as they are low or non-impact. Skipping would be less impact once you stay on your toes.
Why not stay in and relax, bedroom triathlon perhaps??*

*Not to be construed in any way as an offer or "come on", merely another suggestion.Your Mileage May Vary, please consult your doctor before commencing Bedroom Sports.

i'd luv 2 stay and relaxed, but i wanna keep my fitness at some level, ive being doin some cycling aat home with my turbo trainer but im not enjoying it as much cos i miss being out doors, and with the weather the and cycling season being over i would like to take a break from it and try another sport for the winter.

Wat im thinkin of is doin running and then doin a short session on my bike(home r gym) to keep the legs at some bike fitness.

Quirky little point of order - I think if you're anyway flexible about the times that you go for your run at (i.e. +/- half hour) then you don't actually get very many soakings during the winter !!

Have discussed this with other runners in the past and many agree with me because even though it rains on a lot of days in Ireland it rarely rains for hours without a break.

So even though it's often miserable and horrible outside, and very often it's wet on the ground, my radical theory is that runners don't get a fraction of the soakings that you would think they get .

I would love to hear others runners view on this most ground-breaking of theories !!!

In fact I'll be even more controversial, I'll go out on a limb here and suggest that a real good soaking is quite rare for people who only run about 4 times a week even during the depths of winter !!!

agree, been training hard 4/5 times a week for a while and only got wet once or twice, and then only when i went out when it was raining anyway.. hardcore!

I'll admit I detest running as an exercise anyway! I've done it to gain fitness and make weight for contests, but it's always been a chore. Music helps but solitary road pounding for miles just irks me, and I would not run in packs either.
From reading I've done and my own experience, running does not suit me, I get shin splints and my knees aren't the best from MA practice anyway, I like less impact these days. Aerobic training is cool though, but I think I'll give skipping a better go this year, and see how that goes. If it goes well I'll post pics :) If not I'll slink away to a dark corner.
I'll be combining it with weight training and Tae Kwon Do and BJJ/MMA work, but hopefully the bulk of my aerobic work will come from skipping, I just want to see if this can work well with a Paleo type diet thrown in for good measure?

I cant reccomend mma enough or even just bjj
its very very good for aerobic workouts and minimal stress on the joints as long as u remember to tap in time.... or else just tap everyone else out ;)
    heh heh!!!
seriously tho its great to do thru the winter, no worries re: getting soaked or colds from winter running.
for the last few years i have always given up running at winter as its just to harsh for me!
