Ok today i got the first new game for my band new komplett pc and thinking it wouldnt be too much for my powerhouse pc i got far cry.

When i loaded up the game however i first thought a few of the colours were wrong (like the straw roofs and stuff were luminus yello) and at first i thought it was just the gamma but after adjusting the gamma for a while with no results i realised that it must be something else and ill get around to fixing it sometime later.

Then however i realised that the textures were not rendering probrably i.e. a part of the beach might just load up as black and so on so i thought id just change the renderer as this fixed a similar problem i was having with giants but it would not let me change from direct3d9.

Another wierd thing is when i go to auto detect settings it puts everything on low when i know damm well it should have no problems being run on all full as the specs i have are follows:
    AMD atholon 3700+ 2.2ghz(1mb cache)
    1024 ram
    Nvidia geforce 6800 gt 256mb
    200gb hard drive

Anyone know what the hell is going on and how i can fix it?

Did you install the latest drivers?

Does it happen on any other games?

Sounds like the drivers. And you don't really want to change from Dx93d

Drivers: http://www.nvidia.com. Don't bother waiting for XFX to make their own drivers (if they even do that), the reference drivers from nvidia's own site will do the trick nicely.

you can use opengl, but it's like unreal you have to edit one of the files in notepad to do it

edit:// r_Driver OpenGL in console, then restart the game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

how exactly do i do that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 978 ✭✭✭bounty

press tilt for console ingame and type r_Driver OpenGL ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭angelofdeath

tilde key to bring down the console (`) button just below the escape key

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

just after trying that there i dunno if it worked, What exactly do i type after i press the tilde key?Like dont put in any spaces if there not there ect.How will i know if it worked?

    -EDIT-
Also just noticed how the game although running on everything full doesnt look as good as al the screens ive seen of it on top spec.whats up with that.

type in this without the quotation marks "r_Driver OpenGl", press enter then quit the game, start it up again and look at the video options, it should say opengl where d3d was, then start up a game and see if you still have the graphical errors

Had a similiar problem with my 6800GT, never did resolve it. Was sick of the game by the time I upgraded my card.

Interesting. The exact same problems happen on older cards such as the Geforce 2/3 and some integrated chips when playing Far Cry.

I'd imagine it's your drivers, and for the record, Far Cry looks beautiful at top spec....

....as well as that, every PC I've owned since 1995, even when I had triple the recommended specs for any particular game, the auto detect setting always set everything to either low or at best medium

had similiar prob with friends pc,and geforce card.and at that i had to downgrade the drivers, yeah down grade.just nvidia been awkward.did ya install the far cry patches 1.3..1.31...1.33.and now to pick your brains.another friends pc is dell.5000 or something.a recent model.game plays well enuff on its pci card.but no sound.the card is audigy zs,did the drivers lark.cos sound is fine on every other game and app ie playing cd.dvd.media files.thru media player, tried dxdiag and nothing.anybody shed some light....

and mobile infintry another reason why the game is autodetecting a low spec is cos of your athlon processor.had same prob myself on few ea games.cos when the processor is idle the frequency is low and as ye know the athlon will change its frequency depending on its load.try playing a dvd in background and start up far cry whilst dvd is playing.auto detect it,see does it change your machine settings.and then close the media player...just my 2 cents

get a download resumer! Flashget... getright, anything that can resume half-completed downloads. Its insanity trying to download anything more than 3-4 megs on dialup without a download resumer!

Are you running Windows XP x64 on a 64 bit CPU? If not, then the 64 bit far cry patch is never going to work.

    Half-life 2 + dialup = more frustration for you...

Indeed, a mate with a 6800GT had the same problem. He just patched up the game and installed the latest nVidia drivers and it went away...

Just a little tip, when you get far cry patched to 1.3, enable HDR (high dynamic range) lighting by going to the console (as above) and typing in
"\r_hdrrendering 7" (you can try other values 0..15 afaik but 7 i said to be the best balance). It looks absolutely incredible.
