Are you just saying "The 40 Year Old Virgin" cos it's fresh in your mind though?! ;)

"The 40 Year Old Virgin" is probably the best comedy of the last few years, in my opinion! But i'm afraid my favourite comedy still remains 'Kingpin'

the big lebowski is my all time fav...

King Pin is excellent as well

Since 95? All the best movies pre date that! The Naked Gun Trilogy, the Hot Shots movies, man I love those.

Although the movie "Mafia" is fantastic as well, and thats from 99 or thereabouts.

40Yr is a fantastic movie, but my favourite kinds of comedy are the screwballs - Naked Gun I think is my favourite comedy movie ever.

anything from lets say 1995 and up!

What the **** is this madness?

That's ruling out many greats like Barton Fink, Withnail & I, Animal House, Doctor Strangelove, The Monty Python films for christ sakes, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Fletch, The Blues Brothers or Charlie Chaplin's masterpiece The Great Dictator! Need I go on?

I'd say The Big Lebowski, but that's so much more than a Comedy, it's a philosophy.

Anchorman and The Wedding Crashers share the award equally. I have seen quite a few films that I would consider funny, but these two top the list for me.

To pick one is hard so here's a list :

This Is Spinal Tap : If you don't laugh, there's no hope for you. The Stonehenge scene is genius.
Monty Pythons and The Holy Grail : For the Knights who say... NI!
Monty Python : Now For Something Completely Different : so many great sketches...
Anchorman : So many classic lines. That 'octagon' remark, the "we've both seen our fair share of pornography" discussion, the freakin battle scene with gernades and tridents!
The Big Lebowksi : Easily in my top five films of all time. Bizarre, surreal and absolutely hilarious : "This is what happens when you **** a stranger up the ass!"
I Heart Huckabees : For something completely different. Seriously different.
The 40 Year Old Virgin : New, but damn it's funny.

Im sure Ill think of more...

Dodgebal:its a great comedy with the classic line "nobody makes me bleed my own blood"

Team America is also brilliant film ive seen it about12times.

Gary:We're dicks! We're reckless, arrogant, stupid dicks. And the Film Actors Guild are pussies. And Kim Jong Il is an asshole. Pussies don't like dicks, because pussies get fed by dicks. But dicks also f assholes: assholes that just want to crap on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way. But the only thing that can f an asshole is a dick, with some balls. The problem with dicks is: they f too much or f when it isn't appropriate - and it takes a pussy to show them that. But sometimes, pussies can be so full of crap that they become assholes themselves... because pussies are an inch and half away from ass holes. I don't know much about this crazy, crazy world, but I do know this: If you don't let us f this asshole, we're going to have our dicks and pussies all covered in crap

spottswoode;Team, this is all my fault. I was overzealous in Cairo. I let racism cloud my judgment. I was so sure the ultimate terrorist was Middle Eastern, but I didn't realize he was a goddamn Gook. I'll never be a racist again.

Spottswoode: No, Gary! You can't leave! We need you now, more than ever!
Gary Johnston: Don't you see what's going on out there? Everyone hates us!
Spottswoode: Hey, now, everyone hated Winnie the Pooh, too.
    Gary Johnston: No, they didn't!
Spottswoode: Well, I did. That cocksucking bear killed Jack Kennedy!

Veronica Corningstone: ...and that can be very distracting. Okay, so when we get to the pet shop...
Brick Tamland: [while coughing] Cough. Look over here.
    [spoken]
    Brick Tamland: Excuse me, Veronica?
Veronica Corningstone: Yes? What is it, Brick?
Brick Tamland: I would like to extend to you an invitation to the pants party.
    Veronica Corningstone: Excuse me?
Brick Tamland: [struggling] The... party. With the... with the pants. Party with pants?
Veronica Corningstone: Brick, are you saying that there's a party in your pants and that I'm invited?
    Brick Tamland: That's it.
Veronica Corningstone: Did Brian tell you to say this, Brick?
Brick Tamland: No! Yes. He did.
Veronica Corningstone: Okay. No. I don't want to go to a party in your pants.
Brick Tamland: Very well. Ian, would you like to go to a party in my pants?
    Ian: No, Brick.
Brick Tamland: All right. Let's go.
[runs off, there is a sound of crashing off screen]
Brick Tamland: It's all right! I'm all right!

A few more additions to my previous post:

    The Holy Grail
Baseketball (so stupid, but so funny)
    Kingpin
    Wayne's World 1 + 2
Supertroopers (might not be one of the best comedies of all time, but it is incredibly underrated and one of the funniest films of the last few years. It should have been a hit)

Check out 'Take the Money and Run'. Its the father of all the Dumb & Dumber, Airplane, Naked Gun-type films. Woody Allen's directorial debut. Remember where you heard it first.

    'I have a gub' :D:D

Why "1995 and up" is beyond me, but it's your thread so i guess your rules, so i'll go with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.Obviously intended to be more than a comedy, and is, but still has the best one liners, certainly "in the last ten years". Depp and Del Toro were pure gold.

    Pre- '95, definitely Withnail & I.
Almost every character has at least one funny line, and in the main characters' cases, nearly every line is funny.

Most of those films range from mediocre to downright terrible. Honest to christ, Tomcats and The Cable Guy? This is a thread about best Comedy!

Definitely. Dont know how i forgot this one.... Fave quote:
[Shaun climbs up little slide, looks around, comes back down]
    Friend : Are there zombies.
    Shaun : Yep.
    Friend : How many?
    Shaun : Lots.

Oh yeah, and 'most' things with Mike Myers are always good for a laugh. And naturally anything by Wes Anderson, the modern day Orson Welles.

Oh god! I just saw The 40 Year Old Virgin today and it sucked! There were like maybe 3 lines that got me to laugh out loud and the rest were just really stupid.

Eh, can't really choose a best comedy. All I'll say is that Dumb And Dumber is excellent and so is This Is Spinal Tap. Also Wes Anderson and the Farrelly Bros. are masters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

I have a list and none post 1995 that I would include

Cary Grant films: Arsenic and Old Lace/Bringing Up Baby/The Philadelphia Story
Blazing Saddles/Young Frankenstein(depends on the day)
    Life of Brian
    The Commitments
    A Night at The Opera
    Sleeper

So many awful films being listed here. It's like all the users are 12. I despise the new wave of 'comedy' on the screen. Anything like American Pie...Shaun Of The Dead...and probably the worst yet, Anchorman...What an awful, awful film. Unless all the forum users are American, I won't be taking back by comment.

Proper comedy = Monty Python (Holy Grail tops it for mé féin), Naked Gun, Hot Shots etc.

    Yawn...

What's wrong with you people, have you all forgotten the brilliant Annie Hall?

"Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach gym. And those who can't do anything, are assigned to our school..."

"Don't knock masturbation. It's sex with someone I love."

"I couldn't make it out to that one. My raccoon had hepatitis."
    "Oh, you have a raccoon?"
    "A few."

"My grammy never gave gifts. She was too busy getting raped by Cossacks."

"Lyndon Johnson is a politician, you know the ethics those guys have. It's like a notch underneath child molestor." :D
