As is customary with this thread all summer, it begins with England's team news.... but there isnt any, it was meant to be a 9:30am, but delayed until noon today..

If Jones is not fit, please, please pick Paul Collingwood.

England squad: Michael Vaughan (captain), James Anderson, Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, Andrew Flintoff, Ashley Giles, Stephen Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Geraint Jones, Simon Jones, Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Strauss, Marcus Trescothick

Recalls for James Anderson and Paul Collingwood in a 13 man squad. Jones is picked, but if he isnt fit, then it will be a toss-up between those two depending on the pitch; a bowling friendly seemer will suit Anderson, and a placid strip for Collingwood to bat on. Chris Tremlett is dropped from the squad, he's not played too much as he's been in the XII for each of the 4 other tests, and consequently, has missed out on some matches with Hampshire.

Bell might be lucky to be in there. I thought Tremlett was in with a shout at 6'7" he can get a lot of action from the Oval.

    Mike.

tremlett was abused by county batters during the week....nit sure of the exact figures but he was totally milked

At moment it looks like high pressure building towards end of week, so there may be not be much time lost to weather, apart from bad light with the shortening days.

seemingly raining at the oval at the moment....oh and jones failed his fitness test

A fine last wicket cameo of 28 runs gets score up to 373 all out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,958 ✭✭✭✭RuggieBear

373 is an okish target to give oz.....should have been much higher on that pitch by all accounts but at least tis competitive

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,391 ✭✭✭arbeitsscheuer

Ah cr*p, the opening pair of Australia have chosen a fine time to regain their batting prowess. B*stards.

Is it too early to say we miss The Welsh Wonder?

    rain rain rain!

Saturday looking dodgy, but Sunday and Monday should be fine.

    Nip and tuck.

    Mike.

    more rain

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,391 ✭✭✭arbeitsscheuer

Langer goes on 105, just as the rain begins to lash.

Interesting bowling in that over from Harmison, it must be said. He seemed to be all over the place, and then he nabbed a wicket when JL played on. Wierd.

    We really needed that though.

More rain, looks like curtains for tonight. 243/1... the Aussies will want to get double that, ideally now before England bat again.

Sundays forecast is not that hot either...

play resuming at half 5, i doubt the aussies will take the light if its offered again.

    Aussies take the light!

    Play ended for the day.

The new ball was due I think which may explain the decision.

I dunno, as long as it isnt a draw I'll be happy. Let somebody win it and not have these constant stoppages all day tomorrow.

ditto....the aussies have a very definitive advantage...the bastids

oh....i should state i'm actually an australian citizen

Please God let the heavens open and the rain pour down...

Come on, the Aussies got it at Old Trafford (and lets face it, that was probably the first time they'd been glad to see it for at least 15 years) England have to get it now...

So much I've been reading, seeing and hearing over the last few days regards a somehow "inevitable" English victory. "The Ashes Are Coming Home" etc. My God, this stuff should be saved and recorded for a "How To Jinx Everything And End Up With Egg On Your Face In A Way Tony Greig Would Be Proud Of" programme.

Anyway, if you're an England fan, pray for rain.
    We're f**ked otherwise.

    Bloody eck, that's some turn-around!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,919 ✭✭✭Brian017

Wasn't expecting this. Maybe the rain affected their rhythm

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

G'wan Shaggy! All out and 6 runs behind but thats irrelevant, the lights good so England will have to be canny for the rest of today. No flashy shots, just stay in.

    Mike.

Just worried that McGrath and Lee start swinging it well.

Warne, McGrath and Lee all out for 0? Not much of a tail-wag!

Warne scares me more than the Daleks as a kid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,691 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

    Arrrrghhhhhh feckin light.

Play the game. booooo to that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Hmmm. England will hope they dont have to come out again today.... cos really, to keep Australia from winning, they have to bat until at least tea tomorrow. There is a max of 48 overs from Warne tomorrow alone If England will get out of this one, they dont want to bat again today..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,958 ✭✭✭✭RuggieBear

    bloody english light :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Pity, while I see why England took the light they should'nt have, except that the Aussies took the light very quickly yesterday so I guess the umpires are being consistant.

If this test were being held in August of course then it would'nt be such an issue.

    Mike.

    No play since 4pm...
England have a lead of 40, with 9 wickets left and 98 overs of play tomorrow.

In other news, during the break, I got my question read out on Test Match Special on BBC Radio 4! :D:D:D

It was... "Has Kevin Pietersen lived up to his own hype since coming into the test side? It seems his own performances have not been up to his previous high standard in ODI's, was he brought into the test side too quickly?? Do you feel he has cemented his place in the test side? There will be howls if he drops the most important catch tomorrow!"

    Listen to it here...

Jim Maxwell poses my question to Rodney Marsh and Michael Slater. :D

Rory Bremner's Geoff Boycott and Richie Benaud are better than the real thing.
