Sickening anti-American attitudes

I would just like to say that I am disgusted at some of the comments that have been made on this forum about the people of America. One person shockingly questioning if the Americans "kinda deserved it" (referring to the Hurricane in New Orleans) and another asking for jokes about the tragedy. It seems it's trendy to bash America these days in this country.

People are entitled to disagree with the country's policies, but to take it out on the people and lay into them with vile, stomach churning xenophobia just makes me sick.

No doubt the people who sneer at the country are the same people who sit down to watch American TV shows and on occasion munch down their Big Macs and who in their spare time watch American movies at the cinema. Hypocrites.

I admire the country. I admire the history and the friendship between the two nations. I'm proud that Irish people played such a big part in helping the United States over the centuries. I'm proud that they have a fondness for our culture and that they take part in St Patrick's Day parades like ourselves.

To the ignorant person who thought they might have "deserved" what has happened to them, let me ask did the Irish people deserve to go through the Famine of the 1840's?

To the person who wanted jokes for a wedding, how about this for a joke - if the people of this country suffered at the hands of a natural disaster, the Americans would almost certainly offer us aid, if we were attacked by another country, we would almost certainly be helped out by the Americans. And this is the country that many Irish people like to denigrate. Now that's a joke.

I await the anti-American ilk to come on and tell me how wrong I am. So be it. Spout your bigoted bile.

This is one Irishman who is not ashamed to say that he supports America and considers it a great country with great people.

God bless America. And shame on the xenophobes.

The American government have been atrocious in providing aid. It has taken 5 days for them to sort it out. I feel very sorry for the people trapped in the city. The police have been looting amongst the people for tvs, laptops etc. Now the government has decided to send in soldiers with the orders "shoot to kill" at anyone looting or causing any disturbance. I feel at this point looting for food shouldn't be disallowed. It will all be gone off by the time this has been sorted out anyway, why not let the people have it? Also president Bush has announed a zero tolerance policy on any illegal acts such as looting. If the government got their act together and had sent in enough aid as soon as it was needed the situation may not have been as shocking as it is.

Why would you support a government who shows so little respect to its own people? The citizens of New Orleans are being treated atrociously by the government.

My post is not about the US government, but the people. As I've said, I've no problem with people having a problem with the country's policies, but to take it out on the people and the nation as a whole is pure xenophobia. Don't you agree?

I don't believe he was looking to start a debate Ricardo, merely to state some facts people might have overlooked. I believe Mr. NiceGuy was stating his opinion that he was shocked and appalled at what was happening on boards in relation to what's been happening in Louisiana. It is shocking to think that people are asking for jokes in the wake of such a disaster. It is simply senseless.

If you would like a balanced viewpoint, why not layout your own 'good' and 'bad' points.

What would make you want to say a silly thing like "God Bless America" apart from the fact you see it on TV?

    Bizarre.

This is the kind of garbage I'm talking about. No, they did NOT deserve it. No one deserves to suffer terrorism. Irish people died on that day too you know.

For someone to even ask that question is, to me, disturbing.

    Think for a second.

America is always telling the middle east that democracy is great, that in a democracy the government truely represents the people. So using that logic, the governments actions is the peoples actions. So attacking the people is the same as attacking the government.

    Comprende?

OK, here we go. Another brain washed one...

    What age are you?
    Are you drunk?
Do you know ANYTHING about what's going on in Israel/the middle east/south America etc.?

    Wow!!

To be fair, I would agree partially with Mr Nice Guy's view that some of the comments on after hours make me roll eyes (not be disgusted, just sigh, roll eyes and move on).

Yes America can be at times a fine country, i just spent 2 months there enjoying those fine things. But there are problems with the country, and some of the comments, raised more in the politics and media section, such as poor management of the rescue effort and the warnings about such a disaster that were ignored are fair game for discussion and criticism.

The way the media presents George Bush (and previous U.S presidents), both in positive and negative light has reflected on America, in that people around the world do not see a country anymore, they see George and his actions. And people can forget at times when they say the things that are disgusting you, that they are talking about a country, they only see George.

I do feel the whole anti-Americanism is going a little far, yes. Nobody deserves to have their entire city drowned like that. If you think about it they have elected Bush Jr. for a second term in office though and people may oppose American viewpoints on certain issues. I disagree with some American values but at a time like this you can't possibly say the people deserve this. That's just sick.

Bush will certainly have lost Louisiana with this fiasco and hopefully the other southern states as well along with it, which would mean he would not be returning for a third term.

No, I'm pointing out the facts.

You do realise America is the worlds biggest terrorist? And you love America. YOU are the terrorist supporter.

Mr. Nice Guy, you know any opinion or statement you make on this forum just won't be met with a level headed, calm response. You can see how this thread is going to go by the first few responses. You have stated your opinion, I don't think there is much point trying to explain and rationalize with people who just want to goat you!
Maybe you should leave it be for the moment and see if anyone actually thinks about their response before they post.

    Perhaps I'm wrong though.

He can't have a third term. Two terms max in America.

Currently a US president can only serve for 2 terms, so he can't return anyway. (As far as I know)

His view that America is a great country, that it is not the most dangerous thing in this world, that it is not a terrorist state, that somehow god should bless it, can ONLY get "WHAT THE **** ARE YOU CRAZY" responses. If he toned down his extremeism we could have a nice discussion.

OBVIOUSLY America does not deserve this tragedy.

Agreed with 95% of that NG, well said. I can't remember anyone poking fun at the Bulgarians when they had flooding and as far as I can remember they had a bit part in the coalition of the willing.

In other words my arguments about you loving a terrorist state shall be ignored? The fact that I've pointed out that you obviously have no clue to America's foreign policies can be ignored.

Look: I know you see nice American movies with pretty white people with shiny white teeth. But this is not the real America, OK?

No. I just cannot comprehend how you can love a country that is screwing with the world so much. If it wasn't for tv shows and movies, most of the people who love America would feel different.

I apologise for losing it a bit though. It's my sensitive topic!

I shall now leave this topic...

    i have been told.

anyways back on topic, although people will have a gripe against america, they may be the most powerfull in the world but id have to agree that the leader in the white house cannot fill that role efficently.
Americans maybe stupid by our standards, but we do have to thank them for certain things
    like for example
    intel...american company here..employing irish people
    same as dell aswell

And the other thing is the irish and americans are so close together people, are we ashamed of this that we decide to turn our backs on them?
our ancestors went where in the famine....yes america
So we have to thank america for a lot of things, but id agree that having GW bush as head of the place now is just not right.

The thing that worries me is how much everyone let George Bush away with. Isn't it just showing any potential future candidates that they can basically do whatever the hell they want and the UK and some other European countries will just sit by and let it happen?
