Eating During A Run

    Can anybody advise if its a good idea(or not) to eat during longer runs (ie over 10 miles)...sometimes when i run i feel hungry, but don't know if its a good idea to eat while i'm running or just to load up before or just wait till i'm finished to eat again

    what do people think?

    I find I can't run very far after eating. I usually get a stitch in my side which makes it a pain to try exercise. I don't think you're meant to eat less than 30 minutes before exercise, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

    athletes drink sparingly during endurance runs, but generally only drinks that contain carbs, and sucrose/glucose

    eat alot on the days coming up to the run(if its a competition run i mean)! but dont eat while runing! it wont go to well with your system

    dependson how far you are going, most marathon runners etc would take on gels
    with water during races and long runs. if you are only going up to 15 or so you can get by with sports drinks..

    When training for the marathon I would often have a sandwich at the halfway point of my long runs 12 miles++

    My training partner thought I was nuts but i felt that I needed it!!

    Never adversly affected me, I guess everybody reacts differently.

    Totally agree - will be doing marathon but i myself do not need food during long runs i.e.2hrs +, just water

    little pouches made for easy carrying and eating, basically sugary glop a bit like jam, you need to drink some water with them and they mix to form an isotonic mixture in your stomach which is easily absorbed. You can get lucozade versions of them in boots but I find them too sweet.

    search on line for 'high 5', SIS or Go gels for more info.


    Transform, should prob practise a bit with at least gatorade on your long runs
    to make sure it suits your system, you will need it on Marathon day to get you through to the end in good shape. You don't want to find out on the day that it messes with your insides..
