yes dolans is doing well, but if scholars isn't then why continue with it draining dolans money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭Zapho

If Dolans sold Scholars, it doesn't necessarily mean that its gonna stay closed. Somebody is bound to jump at the chance to run a bar on campus. Look how well the Stables is doing, that takes in some amount of cash!

Scholars has def gotta be taking in loads of cash - think bout the food alone, that brings in a fair penny id say. maybe the question is not what they are taking in, but what they cld be pissing it away on?? im sure they have no probs making the cash... all the same tho, i wld be really surprised if it doesnt open soon

Unless someone had the idea to open up a juice bar <.....pause for reaction.....> seen as
they were suggesting it for so long. Or maybe a snooker club! Now that wouldn't be
    so bad!

The scholars has gotta be raking in the cash, sure its not as popular as the stables, but it's plenty popular, to keep afloat at the very least.

    good things about scholars
1)they do the decent end of lots of musical styles.
2)they dont serve wheatgerm juice of whatever it is these juice bars sell.
3)fine big hairy pint of fosters for only €3
    4)the food, naturally
5)the drinking game u play with the straw to see how wasted u are.(i am aware it has a much nobler cause, but 'who's the drunkest' competitions are funny, and i defy anyone who tells me they're nay so.)
5)each to their own, but i far prefer scholars to stables, due to the lesser amounts of eejits peeing against doors on a thursday night.
    6)the gravy.

Ah, yes, I'd forgotten the gravy. The consistency of tar, and the taste of heaven. Scholars, we hardly knew thee.

Seriously*, The scholars only did good business five nights a week, for about eight months of the year, so it's quite possible that while it was making money over the term, it was losing money overall. Plus, how many pint glasses have 'disappeared' from there over the years? It must be thousands. That was probably the final crippling blow to the owners. Shame on you all who took glasses

I'm staying resolutely cynical about it closing though. Some would call it denial. I call it 'Pretending it won't happen in the hope that it might come true'.

*Actually, I don't want to imply that I don't take the gravy seriously, because I do.

I know someone who stole a staplegun from scholars. Is that why theyre in financial difficulty? And is that someone going to go to hell?

well worst case scenario (it does close) then at least you got some memorabilia Petee. you could see whatever you've got on boards and give the money to the owners of scholars as penance!!
    same goes for stapler boy/girl

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 829 ✭✭✭kodute

ah i too must admit my part in the downfall of the scholars, we have one of those cloth Heineken railing banners adorning our sitting room. The financial burden of having to replace their queueing system might have been too much.

Dammned if I can remember which glass it was. :D

In fact it was probably smashed that night we broke all those glasses last year!

I took a crap load of beermats one night too! Or maybe it was the time I pillaged them for about 4 _free_ Coors lights one night.

Has anyone actually confirmed its closed properly or is it still all rumour and innuendo?

    dont worry about pint glasses.

I'll bring a case with me when I go down :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭Zapho

I nearly got one of those Erdinger glasses. I had the great idea to hide it in a bag belonging to a girl I didn't know when she wasn't looking. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

And whats this about the gravy? You're right IceHawk, it does have the consistancy of tar, and to me it also tasted like tar leaving me to believe that it was infact, tar! And then you get people ordering a plate of chips and gravy, thats what ketchup is for people!

its true Im afraid! I was gutted when I found out - but I have it 'from the horses mouth' as such - not that any horses run the scholars that is!!

**** sake. What the hell are we going to do now? We leave for 8 months and the place turns to ****e

Pending interest? What does that mean, if people make a big enough fuss might it be reopened?

I have a feeling the Students union AGM might not have too much trouble meeting its...umm thingy where you ahve to have enough people to vote..or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 522 ✭✭✭keevita

quorum. i stand to be corrected on spelling.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,421 ✭✭✭bluedolphin

SU AGM hasnt been quorate in years...but maybe this would justify attendance. RIP scholars, sob sob, who loved the taco fries????? beats everywhere else handsdown for food, c'mon €4 for a chicken roll?? get a drink included in most places for that price!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

well the story is that it might have new owners by Christmas, so we will just have to wait and see. I am sure it won't stay closed for too long... just that it is not going to reopen this side of xmas!!

    :(

no harm really, dont like the place at all!!! when i started in ul 5 years ago (now a post grad), the stables had one of the highest turn overs of any pub in ireland. then they opened up the scholars, and it took away alot of the custom. love the stables, hopefully now it will be back to the way it was, youd have to queue to get in there most night and the place was awesome, full and great crack. as regards the food, the days i ate in college, i liked the paddocks and the odd stables dinner, however, i found the sports bar the nicest

From what I hear the Scholars never made that much so interest isn't likely to be very high. Its a blow but maybe it can be turned into something else.

    <giggles>

Anyway, I don't see why they don't open up another pub there. There'll definately be the demand for it, especially now that there won't be as much varity of bands and fun events like Cyotte ugly (I know its spelled wrong!)
I for one had no problem going to Scholors when Stables was too packed, especially around rag week and end of exams cuz there was no queueing and the place had decent bands.

maybe it can be turned into something else.

How about a night club, and turn the contemplative centre into a chipper. The campus would be perfect then, everything in one spot! Ah.... can always dream....
