Baggy pants, yay or nay?

Ive been wearing no other pants except baggy pants (Road, Bleu Bolt, etc) for at least the last three years. Only exceptions being when work required it, or for a special occasion such as a wedding or a funeral. I even wear them when im on a night out. I love everything about them, from how they look to how comfortable they are, and when they get caught under my shoes and get ripped, I think they add charm. I even just ignore the 'sk8er boi' namecalling.

Why Im posting here is that Im afraid they will go out of fashion. If they do, i might have to resort to whatever might come into fashion, and i dread the day that happens. Is there any sign of them going out of fashion, and how long away is the day?

How baggy are you talking about? The ones that are wide enough to nearly cover your shoe and are of equal bagginess all the way up the leg?

I used to wear similar trousers but I outgrew the trend if you will.

If you're worried about them going out of fashion and becoming hard to find, just start stockpiling them now.

they won't go out of fashion any time soon i reckon... bear in mind that the reason for baggy pants increased popularity in the first place was the obesity epidemic in teh US which started the whole "loose fit" functional leisure wear thing....

and the great thing about baggy trousers, be they oversized chinos or baggy jeans or whatever, is that all you really need to do is get a pair of combats that are a few sizes to big and make a few small adjustments - should you ever need to improvise, which you probably wont anyway!

on the other hand.... fashion is cyclical - wearing flares in the mid 80's would have got you some funny looks - and pretty much everything will come back into fashion within a decade of it going out of fashion.

Yay for baggy pants! The most comfortable trousers ever :)

*is wearing baggy grey cords right now*

They are ok I guess, and as for being in fashion, for me that would be one reason not to wear them. I'm just not into the whole following trends thing. But when they get torn and ripped at the bottom I think they look crap, no matter who's wearing them. Surely if they drag like that they get soaked when it's wet out. How do you combat that problem?

I had that issue a year or two back, in wet weather the wet soaked halfway up to your knee and took ages to dry and had negative effects on my shoes.

It's just part and parcel of wearing them.

I wear road cords, and they're baggyish apart from that nayy

You see that would be the first reason I wouldn't wear them Grimloch. There's no way I would put up with that.

baggy trousers a la hip hop/rapper artists or baggy trousers a la skaters/nu-metallers?

post some pics if you've got some

I like my jeans baggy, but not hanging over my shoes like curtains  , those things are an accident waiting to happen  . Something comfortable to skate in and not be restricted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

I like my jeans baggy too, not excessive, just comfortable. Same width all the way down looks best I think, on me anyway. What's all this Chino/Emo malarky people go on with these days anyway? What are they supposed to mean?

I wore baggy jeans/trousers from about the age of 8/9 till late 14/early 15's...

    I just realised that:

    a) While when I first wore them (jeans, "baggy trousers" in general have always been popular), not too many others were in Galway anyway, and I'm not big on looking like everyone else....now about 40% of <25 year olds wear baggy jeans...

    b) This is the simple one. They just don't look cool to me anymore. Jeans in topman/army navy store look alot cooler to me, and though you lose a tiny bit of comfort (tbh, baggy jeans arent THAT comfortable), you feel alot better wearing them :) .

/me looks down at sexerific jeans and smiles.

I think we need a definition of baggy. I think some of us are talking about varying degrees of bagginess.

    Visual aids may help.

    depends...
yay if your [relatively] tall and slim
nay if your short and podgy.
    Yay on a boy
Nay on a girl [however there are exceptions just imo most of the time baggy trews are just not flattering on cailíní!]

Definite yay from me. I think baggy trousers are great, they look good on most guys, and from all the different styles you can choose from, you can wear just about anything on your torso with them. They wouldn't be suitable for a job where you'd have to look slightly professional. Perfect for students though :D Ohh, and with regards to going out of fashion.....I don't see any chance of that happening, I think it depends on when you think they're out of date for YOU.

I used to wear baggys all the time , HOBO was the shop for me .But then HOBO in Waterford shut and I was forced to wear fitted clothes all round , I went home in my fitted clothes and my mam was like oh my god Laura ya lost all the weight how did ya do it and a load a people asked me was I dieting , the greatest week ever that was :) I like em now with a kink in the leg alright but not too baggy , a little fitted are more flattering I find.

I used to wear HOBO fairly religiously too. Similar to the "Tent" pic that Endurance Man supplied. Very comfortable although quite impractible in wet weather and was nothing more than a nuisance at the end of the day.

Although as I mentioned I outgrew the whole thing but think they look fairly good all the same.

Its quite a pain in the arse though having them trailing along the ground getting saturated and filthy dirty.

Looking back on it they probably made me look fatter than I was.

    Tent for me too:)

Some material can be terrible for baggy pants though, I've a few nice pairs at the moment that are the bees knees. It's so hard to find a nice pair:(

I used to wear road jeans all year round but now I just wear them when the weathers good. They derfinitely didn't make me look fatter than I am even though I only 5ft2. Mind you I have a skinny arse and I wore them fairly low slung ( much to the motherships horror!). I found that the denim and stitiching were pretty good quality compared to some of the rubbish thats being sold now - I still have my first pair which I bought about 5 years ago.

They are actually pretty nice, without the chain, and maybe a bit of alteration to the side pocket too. Sarge, how did you find out where she found them? Where did you find them either of ya?

I love baggy jeans on guys and girls. I like that black pair that was posted. I'm a girl and I wear them (not like the jeans posted, just very wide leg) cos they're very comfortable and I just prefer the way they look on me to narrow jeans which make my legs look dead skinny. I hate when people think you're trying to look like a 'rocker' or goth when you just prefer that cut.

I dunno what you can do about them dragging on the ground, they all do that. Just try not to wear em on a really wet day? I agree its dead annoying when the water soaks all the way up

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

every single pair of my trousers are very very long (so long I wear 4" high platform runners) but I dunno would they be classed as baggy, cos I'd just say they are very flared. but they look good. As has been mentioned, all my trousers soak up the rain, trail along the ground etc so they end up getting fairly filthy

Sounds delightful  :p . My sister also has a few pairs of pants like this. I have seen her plant her face on the pavement more than once due to tripping over herself.

I've never fallen in public, but I have fallen down the stairs more than a few times :o

yeh maybe take the chains off.......but keep one on the side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭grimloch

They are quite the danger on stairs I say. If they happen to be very baggy and are long they get caught under the front of your foot when going up stairs thus resulting in tripping up and looking extremely foolish indeed.
Am I the only one who would take them chains off the minute I buy them?

If I was to wear them I would remove the chain, it's just something else that can get caught.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,220 ✭✭✭20 Times 20 Times

I would certainly and plan to put all teh chains ion one side when i get these pants
